  • In this video series I am going to be installing and configuring the new Windows Server 2016. In the seventh video from the series I am going to implement Failover Clustering for file services, a great feature that can make your environment highly available. It can significantly help reducing downtime for services and lowers the impact on unexpected disasters.

    Great video, Thank you!
    Exactly what I was looking for :)
    P.S: for people who got a bit confused like me, after 14:50 you can do it on either node 1 or node 2. You don't have to do it on both.

    You reference building the storage node as another video but I don't see it, which video goes over the configuration of the storage server?

    Nick , You are way better than my MCSA mentor.. He didn't even teach us properly for the 740-70 until 742-70 tests..
    From the bottom of my heart, I thank you and wish you the best!
    Edit - A question, if I may? - Failover cluster with iSCSI means that the disk will be highly available.. if the file server is down, one of the nodes will take it's place. the point is - if the file server (NLB-STOR-01) will have downtime - the other nodes will not be able to cope... so if thats the case - how can I connect the 3 disks to all 3 computers?
    Another edit - As I watching this vid again - im guessing you need the nodes as 'middleman' like in RAS gateway and RADIUS server? one is for the authentication, and one is actually the one giving the access to the internet? [here its - one server is actually storing the disks [iSCSI disks 1-3] and the nodes are for the authentication, and act as 'Access Servers']

    If I have 2 physical servers, (server1 and server2), can I virtualise NODE 1 and NODE 2 using hper v on my second physical server(server2)? (which is just a redundancy for my physical server 1) and host the storage on server 2?

    Hi Nick
    I watched now 4 of your videos and must say: Well done! I not often saw such great tutorial videos.
    However in that video I have a question as at 12:55 where you are at the disc management on Node 2 you say, that you won't create volumes but bring the disk just online. But after having some trouble on 13:19 the disc were already online with the same drive leters as already allocated on node 1. So my Q ist, why was wouldn't you create volumes on node 2 first? And why were them online after refreshing the disc management console? Or did I miss something?
    Many thanks and please keep going on with your videos!!!
    BR Ronny

    • @NLBSolutions

      Hi Tommy, from Windows Server 2012 you do not have Enterprise as a version. From Windows Server 2012 you can install failover clustering on both Standard and Datacenter versions. It is the same with Windows Server 2016.

    Hello, First THX A LOT for your demo - very helpful !
    I have a question for you : I get vmware and 2 VM (in the same ntw and ping ok) with WinS2016 ont them. I try to "validate config" in order to create a Cluster but fails :
    Browse then both objects= nodes cannot be found ! Is it because I didn't create any AD (with one DC) ? In other words, is an Active Directory (domain instead of Workgroup) mandatory to create a CLUSTER ? Regards

    • @michaelfullerton3626
      @michaelfullerton3626 4 роки тому

      I have a similar setup. Dell server with VMware running and about 30 VM's. But I have a domain set up and the servers I used were part of the domain. It worked exactly like his video. So I would say that you need to have an AD domain environment going.

    • @kerlerom
      @kerlerom 4 роки тому

      @@michaelfullerton3626 Yeap, I added a DC and get now a domain and it works ! Another thing : I had to declare iSCSI target with IPaddress "mode" (IQN or DNS naming does not work) ie iSCSI connect fails if IPaddress not used... THANKS for your confirmation !
