  • I just added 2 250 watt metal halides to my 210 gallon reef tank. Come find out why.

I have 9 planted freshwater tanks with 6xt5, I always run one UVB bulb and I do notice a difference in plant, fish, snail growth, life in general seems more "beast mode" with UVB. when I run too much UVB (2 bulbs) I notice sun tan, burns, and overall a decrease in plant growth (skinny limpy burnt and brown tips). I think halide and T5 HO is superior in every way. LED has one thing only I favor, blue looks amazing with LED. Great video. take care! I dont have any salt water but cool video

Pffioouu, that's a lot of light and I love it :)
Metal Halide was the reason why I stop my aquarium 15 years ago. Too much heat and I couldn't dissipate it in my room.

Aqua Splendor this is all an experiment for me at the moment. I’m going to put the glass covers on it’s not worth the risk. I’m also using mine as supplemental light so i don’t have to run them if there are problems

Aren’t the covers to protect the bulb from splash

Hey don't forget these old odyssea fixtures were fire hazards! If they don't burn I think it will work out well. When I setup my extra 90 gallon (36x24x24) 1 250w with a giant pendant lights the whole tank.

This is so cool and old school! I used to have the same Odessey MH + T5 fixtures from eBay back in 2007. Good times lots of rapid growth!

I’m running Plasma LEP and can only run them max 3 hours a day, otherwise I get UV burn, and that’s with glass to stop UV. Plasma is full full real sunlight. Lots of coral don’t like full sun spectrum. I like T5 which I am moving to as my main daytime light.

Always liked the look of MH. With your corals shading the bottom so much might be worthwhile to put the halides right up front angled towards the center to punch some light down into the shadows.

Someday I’m going to just pull the trigger And kick it old school with the MH and T5 combo. LED just ain’t it. I’ve got an Orphek Atlantik icon on one tank and that’s been my favorite as far as LED’s go. Their factory Helius program is pretty MH like I think.

Oh for heat I reduced lots of heat using lexan plastic, good light transmission but insane heat removing properties.

I'm going to light my 55g with a metal halide. I can't wait to see the difference of growth compared to this led bar I have.

I loved them but things get hot,I used to turn my fans facing out🤔 that way it would push the Heat out from under the canopy,I tried both ways and for me it seemed yo keep under the hood cooler getting the Heat out. Long time ago,Hey double check the Electricians Work make sure you don't catch fire, I did the same thing😂😂💜 ✌🌿

I’ve been seeing a lot of ppl lately going back to halides.. I’m switching from Phoenix 14k to Hamilton 20k which is more blue and supplementing with t5 for more pop.

Are you saying that you’re running your MH with cover off your fixture? Too much UV bad for the skin. One splash of water and Boom! That’s sounds too risky for me.

I wonder, if you would run only MH's versus only Kessil's, is the shimmer the same or do Kessil's have more?

    • @Harolddespui

@@MileHighReefers I had MH's in the late nineties (and quit the hobby in 2000, just recently restarted), but i can't remember exactly how the shimmer was only then it was perfect in my eyes and i was totally in love with it. I'm very curious. :-) If i have to guess the shimmer was more gentle than Kessil, because of the big reflector around the bulb. Your reflectors are smooth by the way, i had those rougher dimpled reflectors which diffuse slightly more.

If you want best results with metal halides, let phosphates and nitrates disposable, like we do with plants in a vase, the more fertilizer the more wil act photosynthesis. The algae???i got the clean up crew to deal with it. Take a look my channel.

Make sure you have the protector glasses for those halide bulbs!!!!
You need the proper glasses to protect you and the organisms!!!! Not any type of glass!
That halide system doesn't look anything safe and not the proper fixture for that tank size either.
I'm not sure you know what you are doing? This shouldn't be published. It shouldn't be done the way you're doing.
You're just wasting electricity and playing with lighting in an irresponsible way, with all the respect.
