Due to the Sri Lanka's location, it has absorbed so many influences from neighbouring regions as well as from traders, migrations and culinary influences via the colonial period.
South Indian, Indonesian, Malay and Dutch influences mixing in with local Sri Lankan culinary techniques has created quite a unique set of dishes within the culture.
Why does Vivek never eat with you guys?
Do not forget a huge influence on the pastries and snacks we call 'short eats' are all influenced by the Portuguese and many more things like language and names! Common misconception is we are called desi's, Sri Lankan's do not consider ourselves desi.
Sri Lankans are desi though. It's geography
@@greenmachine5600 it's not geography it's culture and history. Bangladesh, Pakistan and India at partition call themselves Desi because they were a part of one nation, Sri Lanka was not in that. Desi stems from desa meaning land or country. Desi is a term unrealized by Tamils and Sinhalese in Sri Lanka. This is not a term known to us, I didn't learn this word until I met Indians, Bengalis and Pakistanis. Please do not tell me what I am, and am not.
@@greenmachine5600 Desi is a cultural term, not geography. Desi is generally associated with India (especially North India), Bangladesh and Pakistan - they're different to Sri Lankan culture which has been influenced by the South Indian and Indonesian cultures. People in Sri Lanka haven't heard of the word, "Desi". People, outside of Asia who are of Sri Lankan descent have heard of the term because it is used by Indians so that term isn't used by Sri Lankans.

what confuses me about not being indians is . the indian king and indian tamils went there and many stayed etc . does that not mean there is indian heritage . people also say te countries lok very different . i dont think so when seing streets shops etc loks the same to me . like germany austria and switzerland the people streets shops etc look all the same . i have been to sl and i have only seen india on the screen .

You have to come to Toronto. Specially Scarborough...east of Toronto. We have the second biggest Sri Lankan community outside the Sri Lanka.
Straight up. There are only two I know of in Manhattan. The stuff in SI is good but it's so far from all the other boroughs.

Almost all common Sri Lankan curries taste heavenly if its made properly.

Exactly.

I live in Sri Lanka and there are so many more food dishes I got to try yet. This is a food paradise and it takes a lifetime to try all that since the food culture differs in every corner of the Island.
So true!!! While some curries have a regional twist to them and there are few curries only cooked in a specific part of the country.
True. Sri lankas sinhelese housewives cook quite a few authentic curry dishes cooked in clay pots over slow fire. Tender jackfruit ( polos) curry properly seasoned , immerse in thick coconut milk , and cooked for over 3 hours over low fire( using firewood) is a heavenly dish. There's also an array of cooking methods and flavours highlighted when making dishes to go with rice, using scraped fresh coconuts or coconut milk.
Yesss we also made a video about the Sri Lankan food in Staten Island - great stuff!
Really
I used to stay in Sri Lanka. Enjoyed every moment there.

I suppose many of the countries have srilankan food stores now😍it's so amazing that how srilankan foods are globalized 🇱🇰
I think it's worth pointing out that Sri Lanka is a multi-ethnic country and despite historical and modern-day issues, Sri Lankan culture is "Sri Lankan" due to the cultural influences from the Sinhalese, Tamil, Moor, Malay and Burgher/Eurasian communities. Not to mention the other smaller groups like the indigenous Veddas, Chinese and Boras among others. Sri Lankan culture wouldn't be "Sri Lankan" culture without all of these groups.
Yes this an accurate description.
Agree
So basically a smaller cleaner India??
@@thendino1 Yes with beaches and super cool people. Sri Lankans don't feel too much connection with India although many similaries. Like Canada and the US.
@@silvabrothersmusic true I’m a Sri Lankan and what u said is true
You are experts in introducing cultures through food in a very positive way, keep up the great work Fung Bros.
I would say that the lamprais (the dish wrapped in a banana leaf) is a symbol of Sri Lanka's multi ethnic heritage. It was created by the Dutch Burgher (mixed Sri Lankan and Dutch) Eurasian community and in part based on the Indonesian lemper. It incorporates elements that emerged in the country's distinct ethnic groups and now eaten by all groups such as the frikadellar, cutlets and shrimp paste.
Do you ever shut up 😆

Represent yourself as a Sri Lankan cuz we all live in one country and I think it is better.
@@silunamanthila6403 Hi Siluna,
I identify as Eelam Tamil, not Sri Lankan Tamil.
I get where you are coming from and appreciate the sentiment behind the solidarity, but as long as the genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka is not recognized along with actions of reconciliation, this is how I will choose to represent myself.
My intention isn't to be divisive, but to acknowledge my ancestral history and intergenerational trauma. I know there is complicated politics involved, and it is definitely not black and white, but I hope we can both respect each other's perspective on this.
For now, let's just agree that the food from SL is some of the best in the world!
Thank you / நன்றி / ස්තුතියි 🙂
@@shan.sri. Brother, first theres no tamil genocide in Sri Lanka. Those are fake news which are made by the politicians and we know how the Sri Lankan politics works. As long as there is racism and fake news among races, its easy for the policians to be in the high places. It is done in every party including Tamil and sinhala.
Also I should say we should think about our motherland instead of fighting for races and religions. The main reason why this country is not being developed is we don't have unity among races and religion. Also if take a country like USA or India they consider them as Indian or Americans, but here we first talk about our race not about the country. As I know ealam tamils need to separate and establish a new state in SriLanka but think if we all get together and live in one country with peace and unity by helping each other, we can easily develop our country. Bro, we should think about our country everytime. We should get rid of his island mentality and that's how we can achieve our targets as a united country but as long as Sinahalese, Tamils, Muslims work for their benefits, its hard to achieve.

In addition to the majority Sinhalese, it is home to large groups of Sri Lankan and Indian Tamils, Moors, Burghers, Malays, and the aboriginal Vedda.
