Ep7: Synth Sounds of Talking Heads' "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)" | Reverb

- Talking Heads classic "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)" shows off synthesizers heavily, but it was recorded and performed completely using a single keyboard: the Prophet 5. William Kurk is here to run through the grooves in our studio (using the Prophet 6) to help you feel right at home when you experiment with the #SynthSounds of...Talking Heads.

More demos by this dude. He rules.
Seriously. Give this guy a UA-cam channel.
He really does a great job in all these videos!
Plus 1!!
Love how accurate you got the synth sounds. I've seen covers that forget that little drag at the end of the note
Wow, soon as you said a south African quality to the music, I finally understand after all the years. You are one amazing guy.
My favorite Talking Heads song...The live version from Stop Making Sense is even more badass
Funny I was literally thinking exact the same 30 sec before I read this post.
Totally 👍 agree
Stop Making Sense is one of the greatest live albums ever recorded.
Rare case where a live version is the definitive version of a song
This was incredibly well done!
not really
Love when knowledge is laid out so clearly by someone who knows what he's doing. Excellent.
Everybody needs this lp.
the album version feels like a nice sunny trip with your family
the stop making sense version feels like you're on a grand tour
Takeaway: I want to be best friends with this dude.
I'm pretty new to synths and loving these.
I have limited interest in synths, basic, self-taught piano skills, and a left hand that contributes nothing to the whole affair, but I love this series. This guy's personality is infectious.
Best... Song... EVER! William is AWESOME!
Absolutely one of my most favorite songs! Good choice!
This guy is the best.
Dude, it sounds like you're talking about a fine wine - which you are! Nice job.
"My Man"!......in a Denzel voice.... This was awesome. You did an awesome job.
This is amazing! I downloaded the audio tracks and I'm rehearsing here at home. Thank you!
Any person that can play this song solo is an absolute legend.
Damn that sequential circuits synth!! What a incredible one.
this is one of my fav songs ever and I love this video!
I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this video
"It just grooves" couldn't have said it better! This is done so well
you guys should do "Electric Feel" by MGMT
Would be a cool segue considering they covered this song in their college days. Theres a video of Andrew playing the break line on Electric Feel where he’s like “YES I FINALLY GOT IT DOWN!” It’s so funny. Would definitely make an interesting video.
Sound8Vision I can imagine them covering The Talking Heads, MGMT was influenced by Brian Eno.
It’s pretty rough, but fun. They were just starting out.

@@Sound8VisionVibe love that vid!
@@Sound8VisionVibe weird. I came from that video. Tf. Hahaha.
RIP Spaced Viking Bernie Worrell
Justin Van Meter had to scroll way to much to find this.
Thank you for the clarification. That slide sounds pretty Bernie-esque, but credit to whom it's due.
Please do a P-Funk song, Kurk!
@yourmanwatson I read an interview with Jerry Harrison where he said Wally Badarou played it.
Jerry Harrison said Wally Badarou played it
Really an amazing job !... Please do Synth Sounds on Donald Fagen track "I.G.Y" from his 1982 Nightfly album... Thanks and massive respect !
Ok, so you are doing a video on the Donald Fagen "I.G.Y." track , right ?..
Thanks !
Musically this song is timeless and addictive!
William Kurk is awesome!
Ya this guy does rule. this song is amazing
Talking Heads is my favorite band and this video did not disappoint!!
Just binge watching these now! So good!
Nice deep dive into one of my favorite songs.
spot on
chevere recreacion deTalking Heads' "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody) con el profeta 6 suena regio
The bracelet tho! :)
What a great choice of song.
Jerry Harrison is amazing and you are too 😎 great video, thanks for showing how my favorite song was made
Very groovy. Good job picking that all out.
Love this series!! Please keep it up :)
I Love this song so much. Thank you for this.
Rocking the NES Kung Fu shirt!
bernie worell RIP 💕💕💕💕
He’s got that members only jacket on too lmao
I love everything about this
Compliments and respect - nice to see a brother with unique taste. Was I too honest? Respect and compliments to you.
The first lead is in Arturia Prophet as Calm Glass Organ :D
Nice Series - It could just be called Synth Sounds of Balearic Beat. Love it!
Man I really love these videos
Awesome dude, great presentation.
Nice job and great band/song to break down!
This is the place!!!!
Amazing video, amazing song, amazing bracelet.
Brilliant thanks
Awesome!
You are an unbelievably cool and infinitely interesting human being.
I like how seems to be enjoying his own tutorial more than us viewers...
Amazing content
Great job breaking down the sounds of that song. I actually thought for one of the leads it was a electric guitar being manipulated to make that kind of noise (I'm sure it's possible that it can be done). One thing you missed was the drum part, what did you use to replicate the beat?
Nailed it
Love this series!
I think that bass line has a modifier slide in it. bum bum boo-a-woo bum dum do do
Otherwise, you absolutely killed it. These videos are amazing keep them coming.
Great video AND t-shirt!
Wow! Great video.Thanks!
I'd love to hear about the construction of Men at Work's Down Under & the echo vocals.
What’s odd is the actual song doesn’t swing at all yet it grooves hard af
Just fantastic!
That pitchbending reminded me of a Duran Duran song. Maybe you can do a song of Duran Duran...
The way he said "heads" had me dying lol
Frankly, I liked this song by Talking Heads because it's more melodic and less weird than most of their songs. And it's catchy!
And I think the word you were looking for was "pitch-bendicity"! ;-)
This is amazing ❤
Would love to hear a breakdown of Duran Duran's Save A Prayer please.
Amazing!
Love these videos!! Great work man! What about Blue Monday by New Order?
William Kirk you are a cool dude
Yo please can you make even more of these. These are cool
“Pitch bend-ticity”. Love it!
This guys wonderful, can you please do Sleepwalk by Ultravox? It’s not all keys, but I wished I asked them when they were on tour about that cool sound. ARP?
More please!
He missed the octave jumps in the bassline.
that's what i was thinking too
Bassmage4 that’s the live version you’re thinking of. The album version doesn’t do the octaves iirc.
@@GunnarDeMinecraft The studio version does include the octave jumps.
It's a 5th not an octave.
Those aren't played by the synth, that's a guitar overdub.
Nostalgia.
Members only!
listen to the brothertiger version of this song it kicks ass
I am digging this series my dude. I laugh at the comments downing some of the things you "missed out." I hear the comic book guy from The Simpsons for some reason. These are the Cliff's Notes of synth song recreation, not the War & Peace version. 5-6 minutes is enough in this time where there is way too much.
Shirt is good
Any Yaz song would be fun ...maybe “Don’t Go”..
This video is for MEMBERS ONLY.
Swag
Nicce
YES!
whats about the drums?
the name of the band was talking heads
More of this please. Thanks!
Do Midnight City by M83
Come Go With Me from Expose please
You guys should do electric feel by MGMT
What is the guitar sound
So, like... how about those patches?
Play this at my funeral
Killer
😍😍
Does anybody know anything about the drums? Samples? A specific drum machine? They sound pretty crispy..
Just production on Chris Frantz's drum. I guess they sampled the snare drum for this video, it's an easy one to catch since the song starts with a snare fill.
It bugs me that so many people get the bass line wrong. Other than that, great vid!
Spot on, except for the bassline which I think is missing some notes
