In conventional use, the word “cynic” has a strongly negative connotation. But its origin is the Greek word for “dog-like,” a name applied to a school of philosophy that stressed living naturally and knowing when to bark and whom to bite. In Zen Buddhism, many students begin their studies by pondering a question about a dog and Buddha nature.
