After the video was made I went to harbor freight and purchased a watch makers hammer. What I did was hold the spring loaded plunger down with the wooden stick I used in the video and used the small brass end on the small hammer to bend the crimp back down to where it should be....
I also have a KREISLER butane electric lighter. That was my mothers. She passed away two months ago. I was going through her stuff and I found it. The electric part works to ignite the butane, but the butane won’t light. It is full, because when I depress the fill thing it’s depresses butane
The triangle logo on the piezo is a Mitsubishi logo but I believe many of the piezo electric modules are the same size, even the ones used in gas water heaters. Grainger's sells replacement piezo modules for about $4.00.
I've got a lighter in the style (a Prince Cheerio 22) and there's a sort of blockage inside the needle valve bit, in the section where the flame regulator is screwed in. That blockage is part of the lighter, but there's something wrong with it. It's so much of a specific issue and hard to fix... but before I do anything more with it, I need to get as much info from around the internet as I can. But I think I've found a video that explains well how to do that sort of repair, just with a different lighter. Well, I managed to sort of fix it. With a needle, I removed a small plastic disc, then scrapped off some sort of old hardened felt that the disc was pressing against. I replaced the old felt some string (it was what I had at hand nearby that could do the job). With enough string, it does the job.
Purchase a disposable lighter and remover the round sponge disc, it usually has a hole in the center. This is 99% of most vintage lighter problems out there. The old butane just gets the sponge dirty and decades of use.
I have a VINTAGE COLIBRI ELITE COLLECTION JAPAN FTR 31000 LIGHTER ENGRAVING PLATE It does not hold its butane. I am wondering would you be able to fix this? Thank you so much I love your videos, Jason.
Hi,..and thanks for the. Video. I pulled my old Colibri pen shaped lighter out of the desk last night, filled it and it won't shut off....I think the shut off is pulling the ends towards each other or away from each other to shut off. either way continues to burn.... Question is,.... How do you access the off switch?
Thank you. But the Hummingbird has a load valve that has no slot to insert a screwdriver; your prephycie is smooth How do you get it out? Best regards...@@Lighters-cf4bd
Tim, I have so much to do right now. Just so you will know, I don't work on lighters anymore that have a plastic butane tank. Never had one that lasted or didn't crack during a repair.
@@Lighters-cf4bd Gotcha. Well I cleaned it well enough to get it to start but the regulator seems to be off. Again I haven’t found any info on it. There is a number inside the cap 087700 and it’s engraved Japan on the bottom. It’s a oval shape silver/gold flip cap style.
Thanks for sharing. I have a few Colibri's that are vintage NOS, but they've been sitting unused. They spark & hold gas, but the gas isn't getting through. I tried compressed air at the nozel in the event that dust was the culprit, but it didn't work. Where would you be looking? It must be a common issue with new vintage lighters that won't light. Hopefully it's a simple fix. Thanks again!
Most likely it's just needs disassembled and cleaned and new seals installed. I just got a grand new never used lighter that was the same. Anytime you store a butane lighter you need to empty the tank and remove the flint if it has one and put a moisture absorbing packet in with it...I will be back sometime next month as I have no internet until next month, so my replys will be minimal at best.
@@Lighters-cf4bd Thank you! I need to start watching more lighter repair videos. I work on antique pocket watches, so I'll probably have workable tools, or I can create by modifying tweezers. Thanks again !
Hi, I have exactly the first lighter you show in the video, but it has a problem, the gas is inserted correctly in the valve which does not leak but does not come out from the top. What do you recommend to do?
Nice video. I also have that same Colibri lighter. My issue is that someone put liquid lighter fluid inside, instead of butane. it's been sitting semi-full for 15+ years. I wonder how bad it will be if I attempt to disassemble it and repair it.
I've got a few cool table lighters from the 30's through to the 70's. One of them you can't put gas in because the valve's seal must be perished, the gas just comes straight out of where it's meant to go! I'm going to try and fix it now I've seen this and have an idea of what to do, so thanks for the video. I've subbed and gonna go watch your other videos…. It's all interesting stuff. Before I start on mine, this seal you just made for this lighter, you say it's silicone... Don't think I can lay my hands on something similar right now. Do you reckon a thick enough rubber band would make a good enough temporary seal until I get some silicone to do the job? Cheers again for the vid and good luck with your hobby.
First thing I would do is remove the filler valve and check the bottom of the valve to see if it unscrews. If it does, your job will be even easier. When you check it out let me know. maybe I can send your some silicone cut to the right size if your in the USA,.
@@Lighters-cf4bdWell I've taken the valve out. Luckily mine unscrewed and yeah, you were right, it was a lot easier! The seal was like yours and more or less crumbled! That was a really kind offer to help with the seal and I appreciate it, thank you. I think I'm going to be ok though (Plus I'm in the UK). Reason being, that part you put your homemade seal on.... Mine's slightly different to yours. Yours has two diameter's to it, the thinner end you slipped the seal over and the fatter half you slid the seal down to. Mine has 3 diameter's to it. Starts off with a 0.5 wide, almost like a hyperdermic needle that sits in a 2mm 'middle' bit next to a 3.5 fat end. I can get the O-ring I need, a 3mm OD x 2mm ID x 1mm deep. There's a place not far from here that sells them. I'll let you know how it goes when I put it all back together. Thanks again for the offer though.
@@BigJayKanerGlad to hear you will be ok! I had a seal that had two different shapes. t I cut two different size 's and used super glue to bond them together. If you do this make sure you only use enough glue to just touch where the two surface's of the rubber meet. Otherwise you will have a hard piece of rubber. You have to find something really small and thin to put the glue on then on to the rubber seals.
@@Lighters-cf4bd Cheers Lighters! Hopefully the O-rings work but if they don't I'll give your method a go. I'#ll be getting two sizes of O-ring 1.5mm ID x 1.5mm CS. That one will be too big, there'll be an over-lap and it won't fit back into the casing... For that I'll try removing the over-lap with a razor blade, or the grinding stone on my Dremel. The other size I'll try is the 1mm x 1mm one. Only problem with that is it has to go over a 2mm spindle (Is that the right term?) Worried in case stretching a 1mm hole over 2mm's might stretch the O-ring too much, making a thinner cross section and therefore a poorer seal? Think I'll try the smaller one first, see how it goes. Might work great. Fingers crossed eh!!
