- In this weeks video, I take a deep dive into forensic anthropology explaining some of the technical knowledge you will need to know, education involved, and what kinds of jobs will be available to you as a forensic anthropologist. As an anthropology student myself, I was so excited to get this video request and create this video. I hope you enjoy!
Who am I? My name is Alivia Brown and I am currently an undergraduate Anthropology student at UCLA on a mission to find a career that I love. My major does not have a straight forward "path" as many would say and I am not only determined to prove that I can be successful in my major but also demonstrate my ability to find a career that brings me joy. This is my journey to expanding my global and anthropological knowledge. This is my journey to finding the best career I can. This is my journey to finding happiness. This is my journey to success.

Hi! Girl Scout mom here. One of the coolest activities my daughter's troop experienced was a trip to the Forensic Anthropology Center at Texas State University. (F.A.C.T.S). The girls were all about 13 at the time and we spent several hours with the team of female Anthro students who ran the lab. It was super engaging! They were introduced to how field research for this career is conducted, the methodologies by which cause of death is determined postmortem after significant decay. We missed the chance to tour "the boneyard," where donated cadavers are housed to study various decomposition circumstances (above ground, below ground, under a blanket, under rocks etc) because winds were extremely high that day otherwise we would have been treated to that. They explored the lab, the equipment and then they were set free to use the tools and what they learned to explore, mark, and document a mock crime scene the students set up for them. The kids also were able to closely examine 2 different sets of human remains on site which were respectfully brought out in numbered boxes and arranged on tables. Not only were they able to get an insider's view of the field, but they were also up close and personal with the students and because of our organization, the fact that the entire department was mostly female really made an impact. Personally, I put off finishing college to start a family and a business, but I'm proud to be re-enrolling into an Anthropology program myself fall after next. I'm in my early 40's so at this point in my life, I will be doing it for my own edification and don't know if I'll end up with a Master's or not, but becoming an Anthropologist has been a dream of mine for at least two decades. I may have even had more fun on that trip than my kiddo LOL. It's never too late!
Congratulations on re-enrolling that is absolutely wonderful! And on top of that, I think it is incredible that you and the girl scouts got to have this experience. It truly sounds one of a kind experience and would certainly have had an impact on me. Thank you so much for sharing this story and passion and I can only imagine what the future holds for you. You are absolutely right-it is never to late!
Go Bobcats!!
I've had an interest in forensics, so I'm getting my degree in biology and criminology, but this seems like the absolute perfect career for me!!! It ties all my interests together
That's awesome!!
What you say about digging is just so true. In my archaeology class, we spent a good half a day to uncover 5 different plots in a practice site (the instructors made a makeshift). Thank you for putting that detail out. People think digging is very easy. THAT IS ONE OF THE HARDEST THINGS TO DO.
Oh my goodness, really?! That's wild!! I have heard stories but have never had to do it myself. Thank you for sharing!
I’ve been studying bachelor of criminology because i want to work on crime scenes but until i started studying, I had no idea how many fields there actually are! I ended up switching to a bachelor of forensic science/bachelor of criminology with a major of forensic molecular biology, but have had to wait months before the next study period starts. Now I am about to start studying the forensics degree and am watching a bunch of these videos, it makes me so excited. It’s the perfect degree for me, I have always been interested in death, and bodies in crime, I actually got into a degree in mortuary science in 2022 but my mum said no..😅 because the degree was in another state. So you see why i’m so excited to finally be able to study what I love.
I’m working on my undergrad in forensics anthropology. Sue Black made me so it! She is an incredible woman and has quite a bit of lectures on you tube and has also written a couple of books. There are a few schools that offer a forensic’s anthropology degree.. Boston University being one of the top. There are on going projects you can work-They are still working on identifying soldiers in Vietnam.. working in war zones is an option as well as each state has a forensic’s anthropologist.. you’re called out if they find skeletal remains.. such as the Brian Laundrie case and Lori Vallow Daybell… I’ve been focusing on biology, anthropology, archaeology and criminal justice right now.. it’s super cool if your good with skeletal remains. Also, archaeology will always tell you the minute you start digging you destroyed a site… it’s about preservation and logging everything meticulously. Love your videos!!!
Wow, thanks so much for sharing! And so glad you like the videos!
Yay! Another great video! This was very useful for me cuz I'm a high school student still figuring out "my future" and what I wanna study among many different subjects/fields that I'm interested in.😄 Tysm for the video and for taking our suggestions into consideration in your videos 🥺❤️
You are so sweet, thank you!! You guys have the best recommendations (way better than the things I think of lol) so thank you!
This is so cool, I'm going to college for this!! I start next week, I'm so excited
What, that's amazing!! I hope you enjoy it-we need more forensic anthropologists out there!

Isn't it AWESOME? So glad you enjoyed!
I'm a forensic anthropology student and it is so awesome, however I will say I hope you LOVE bones and everything about them because man do we do a lot of that. Forensic anthropology is great, stay at it and remember the more morbid the joke the better!
@@jackorebaugh6733 I bet the technical training is intense! Such a good point...so many bones haha
@@AliviaBrown Its a lot of archeological techniques that we modify for the purpose of excavating remains rather than pottery, super fun and really dirty but thats the fun part!
How cool!!
Hey, Alivia, I just wanted to say that I love what you're doing, and your videos are super helpful and informative!!
I'm a senior in high school and I am currently researching different careers I'm interested in. Anthropology and archeology as well as ancient history/culture has been an interest of mine for as long as I can remember, and I love learning more about the career options related to those subjects. I found your channel today while doing some research and I was super excited to find you. I really appreciate that you get the information across while still keeping it at a friendly, personal, and conversational level! 😊 I subscribed and have been binge-watching several of your videos since. 😁
I also wanted to mention that I enjoyed your video about journaling as well. You offered a lot of good ideas/advice! I tend to get frustrated when I can't stick with a plan, so I really appreciate your relaxed and fun aspect!
Hi Marissa! Thank you so much for taking the time to write this comment. I love hearing that my videos have the right balance of information and relateable-ness lol. The career options in this field truly are so wide spread and I never get over hearing about other people who are interested in these topics! Thank you for subscribing and best of luck to you in your endeavors!!

I'm so sorry to hear the education is low in South Africa-that would be so challenging. I think it is great that you are using online resources (such as these videos) to learn. Sending you all the best!
Can you do one on the plants that grow around bodies buried in the ground
Iam in 10 th grade rn please suggest the major subject i need to focus to make base in this field
Currently job searching right now and I’m in a slump… do you have any advice on how to get your foot in the door of the field? I went to a private university and I’m regretting it cause I wish I had the connections that UC schools have 💀
Hi, I’m looking to major in Anthropology with and end goal in Forensic Anthropology. Would you recommend a Bachelor of Arts or Science for your undergraduate?
May I ask if how important forensic anthropology is in personal identification? Thank you 🥰
Hi, of course! I would argue that forensic anthropology is extremely important when it comes to personal identification. As this is something incredibly important to get correct the first time through, the technical training forensic anthropology has to offer is essential. Of course, I am biased but I hope this is at least somewhat helpful!!
I am pursuing my bachelor's degree in anthropology . And i am totally confused about my career 🙂
I would be lying if I said I haven't been there...do you know what interests you?
Hai alivia brown
So...my question is that am studying my bachelors degree in BA(EPP)ECONOMICS,POLITICAL SCIENCE AND PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION.
So....can I join forensic anthropology in pg???
He specializes in the science of archaeological preservation, as well as the specialty of forensic anthropology 😭💔
Iss Anthropology is diffrent subject or same subject in forensic science???
Forensic science is a subfield of anthropology! So same subject, just more specific :)
I studied it. Covid killed my career in Germany. Now I'm struggling to make a living. Thanks. I regret my life decisions.
