I had a 1986 Ford LTD wagon, it was baby blue, 4-door Sedan 3.8L V-6 automatic overdrive. It was my second car, when I was in high school, after our purple 96 caravan. I Inherited from my brother when he left to college and got a 4Runner. He painted it flat black and painted a rat fink on the side. Dubbed, “the rat wagon.” Oil didn’t get changed and it was black when I got it. It lasted about a year and a half before two lifters got stuck and flattened out the cam. I was new to cars and ended up putting a SOHC engine in the 98 neon DOHC we had sitting there that had spun a rod bearing, as it was better fuel efficiency. Then started the journey to owning 12 of them and 2 PTGT’s. 😂 we had air shocks on the back of the LTD wagon, it was really fun sliding it around corners, I loved the parallelogram windows. I had a buddy riding in the back just a flat area, and I went up into a parking lot while turning, a bit quick, my last year of high school. He flew up and hit the window and broke it out. The one of two originals, then we changed it out with another piece of plexiglass. He had a minor concision. 😥 I started fixing the car up replacing the window regulators, stereo upgrades, detailing the interior, painting engine parts and the wheels. My brother had got a mustang II hood scoop and cut for it, and welded a glass pack for a muffler. It sounded great. It was a sad day when my dad and I tore it down and found out the issue. My dad bought it for $150 from a buddy, and we took it to the junkyard and got $150 for it. It was fun times with my brother and friends. We would top it out (at 90mph was its max) and from 70-90mph it would struggle. 😂
Thanks for sharing your story with your families LTD’s. They were great cars, and had a time and place in our lives.

Glad you enjoyed my story. Thanks for your story as well. That's always cool when people take the time to leave something like that in the comments and yours is a good read. Most people don't like the 3.8 engines but I actually had a '92 Cougar with one for a while and really liked it. Those old Caravans were nice too, just had to be gentle on the transmissions and otherwise they were pretty solid.

Sounds like an amazing car! My dad bought a brand new 1980 Chevrolet Malibu Classic, but I think this Ford LTD would have been the other choice.

I had a white 1977 Ford LTD i bought it around 1999 when I was 19, for 450 bucks. I think it got like 7 mpg.
A year or so later I fucked up when changing the transmission fluid and a valve fell out and killed the tranny. I had it rebuilt which cost the same I paid for it, 450.
After it sat while I was waiting to have the tranny rebuilt, the rear main seal went bad. I continued to drive it for a year or so, it used about a quart of oil a day and when it rained it would leave a rainbow trail.
I accidentally rear ended a woman and destroyed her car, I just had a dented quarter panel. I remember one time hitting a road barrel and it flew off like it was nothing to that car. I think it weighed like 4500 lbs. I had to get rid of it about a year later bc the apartment complex complained about the oil leak

That's awesome! That sounds like it treated you pretty well. This one in the story was the smaller one, the LTD 2, so that's why it was better on fuel, still a large car by modern standards.
