    Plot twist: Ali got a job at light bicycle, built his own wheels, then had them shipped to his house.

    This was really informative and did not feel like an ad! I'm glad you are getting good sponsors and they couldn't get a better wheel building critic.
    Maybe they would invite you to see their wheeling building process? I think that'd be a lot of fun to watch.

    Off topic feedback on the new workshop as a filming space:
    Curtain looks good. Medium grey was the best choice by far. Well done!
    Lighting is a little bit too overhead for my liking but perfectly serviceable for non-pedants :p The white walls help but some LED panels lower down may tame the office-cubical effect. High CRI video lights for preference. Keep your frame paintwork looking rich and sexy and your skin tones looking human.
    Sound is clear but you do have noticeable room reverb. Hard to avoid inside a cube. Some sound absorbers on the walls and ceiling would help but you can also do a lot in software. iZotope's De-Reverb module is meant to be pretty decent if you'd prefer to tackle it with mouse-wiggling rather than DIY. It's also less flammable than closed-cell foam.

    • @noobFab

      This is good advice! The new space sounds decent, but could indeed be a little more inert.

    • @Ali_Clarkson
      @Ali_Clarkson  Рік тому +3

      I actually really appreciate the advice…audio is something I’m fairly newb at but I also realise it’s importance (more so than video quality even!).
      The bike cave is still in its early days though, it’s very empty at the moment which won’t be helping. Soon I’ll have a workbench and more storage which will help break up the flat wall shapes and if there’s much wall space left afterwards I do have some audio panels I could use.
      Lighting-wise. Again something I’m still learning about. For this video I obviously had strong overhead lighting (can be reduced if needed) but I also had an Aperture studio light facing me…that’s more subtle than I expected but I do have another on the way and I’ll experiment with positions once I’ve filled the space with workbenches/shelving etc

    How do you decide how much tension to put on the spokes, and how do you feel about tuning by pitch? I feel the same about other people's wheels. None of mine have ever failed, while my experience with other's builds is mixed at best. Spank laces a pretty decent wheel. To be fair, those light bicycle rims are so stiff and round right out of the box, all you really have to do is tension the spokes the same before even bothering to spin. I'm using those same 26" LB rims (enduro weight) on my trials bike. They were absurdly easy to true.

    Couple questions for you Ali-
    Is stomping on the wheel to prestress it bad for the freehub side?
    How tight should the spokes be on lightbicycle rims? Mine feel a lot looser than they used to on inspired rims.

    • @Happy_Biker
      @Happy_Biker Рік тому

      Enter into a search engine:
      "bicycle wheels spoke tension chart" and you'll get plenty of answers. There are differences based on use and materials as well.

  • @davidburgess741

    I don't ride anyone else's wheels. I want to look in the mirror at the wheelbuider. Carbon rims might not be best with rim brakes. If I ever could pull off the tricks you routinely do, I'd certainly break before the wheel. Your videos helped up my wheel building albeit with the old school bent.

    My two cents about wheel builds these days - I've got an "entry level" Specialized a couple of months ago and the wheels (29", 28h) have been nothing but perfectly straight since then with me being almost 120 kg with the bike and doing some sloppy riding on pretty technical trails, casing a few jumps hard and such. To be honest, I can't come up with an excuse to replace them even though I'd like some new fancy wheels.

    If a rim is straight, and the wheel is as true and round as it is there, then the spoke tension can only be even around the whole wheel.

    • @Ali_Clarkson
      @Ali_Clarkson  Рік тому +2

      Yes kinda…it depends how well the rim, spokes and hub was made.
      I’ve certainly built wheels where the rim quality was bad and it needed quite uneven spokes to get straight but even with good quality stuff there can be small variables that might vary the spokes tension by a few pointers on a gauge, it’s not really a big deal though

      All the videos I've seen of them have been incredibly impressive. It seems if you buy from the right brand the only way to destroy them is to run them without tires and purposely sending them into harsh hard edges. Though they are quite expensive.

      If the nipples are visible then you don't need to take the tyre off. Some rims have internal nipples which are a massive pain.

    He Ali, good testing methodology, but if you think that the wheels you got are representative of what the general public would get, I'd question that, yours were most likely VERY carefully built. If you want to impress people, let Light Bicycle send you a PayPal credit, then transfer it to a misc person, no relation to you and let them order a set of wheels like how the general public would get them, for you to then check out and report on.
