Making the Longest 1:1 Lego Gear Train

  • Wanted to make a long gear train where all the gears visibly rotate. Using only Lego parts. Restriction: the first gear and the last gear must rotate at the same speed (gear ratio = 1:1). Enjoy!

Just because there’s almost no friction doesn’t mean a force is applied, whenever a gear is applied it puts a lot more weight that needs to be moved, by that applying a greater force for each individual gear, because of that with every gear in the mix it would need a greater force to pass the mechanical force onto the last gear, in a way, it’s like you were pushing a big block of ice across the pavement (starting off with 5 kg and adding 1 kg every second, Ice doesn’t melt), you almost have no friction applied in said object, since you are the constant push even if it would be easy at first, the weight would eventually overcome the strength being applied to it, bringing it to very little to being completely motionless.

Took me a second to piece together what was happening, then it hit me square in the face. T = J*α, where J is the moment of inertia and α is angular acceleration. Moment of inertia is proportionate to mass. So the more mass you introduce, the greater the moment of inertia. But if the torque does not change, then the product of J and α must not change. So as J increases, α decreases by an equal factor, until eventually the acceleration due to the applied torque becomes negligible.
