  • If it’s going to be it’s up to me. And You should not think of yourself only.
Navajo Historian, Wally Brown, teaches the traditional teaching about being self-reliant. Today people depend on many different external forces. This runs contrary to the traditional teachings.
The old Diné saying “If it is going to be, it is up to me.” And “You should not think of yourself only”.
This means... you do it for the others in your life. You do it for your loved ones. But at the same time if it is going to be, it is up to you.
At the center of it all is self-reliance. No one will do it for you. That is the traditional teaching.
Producers - In this week's exclusive Video, Learn more about the self-reliance teachings and how it is more difficult to live that way today.

Yes, it feels so good to be self-reliant and there forms a relationship with the environment and the creator spirits, as well as with yourself.

I love your values! Today not enough people realize how important those values are.
It means the difference between survival and not surviving.
They are a way, or a path.

Well, he's sure got this one right. No one will do it for you. I believe people have drifted away from this. What makes me really concerned; is that way too many young ones have pushed it even further.
Many today have come to actually expect others to do their bidding. And if you don't give them what they believe they're entitled too; they get outrageously angered with you. Family is crucial. And we do need to find a way to keep the world from slipping any further in the wrong direction.

Ahéhéé for your teachings. Creator keep you healthy, happy, wise and wealthy. I heard of a teaching about women’s shawl. Shimá told me when at pow wows, if I decide to dance I am to always wear a shawl folded on my arm. I just heard that, that is wrong and I am suppose to wear the shawl wrapped around me on my shoulders, please help me.

I forget about these teachings. I don't live near back home, and my nali man and nali girl should be teaching me these lessons.. but one catch is that my mother shows these teachings in action. I haven't been back home. But thank you Elder for your wisdom..

please forgive my levity.. I have a picture in my mind of the indigenous people.. being instructed to do the work.. while European folks watch.. and receive the benefits...no response.. the European people raise their voice.. in case the instructions were not understood.. it's really hard to make slaves out of free men and women

I have listened to this man and I have to respectfully disagree with his ways..
The way he speaks on huehuecoyotl is very disrespectful, coyotl is very wise and respected in many tribes as a great teacher of life. Coyotl form great families, they stay united in communities, and they have an inner will to overcome any obstacle.
