Veritium HF Clock - Interpreting the VOACAP Data

In this video I show how to interpret the VOACAP data from the HF Clock and use it to your advantage for chasing DX or determining your propagation chances to make a contact anywhere in the world.
Note: Ham Clock version 3.03 included significant changes related to the DX clusters. Prior to 3.03, every single spot from the cluster to the clock resulted in the clock sending a show/heading command which a very vocal minority of dxcluster sysops objected to. From 3.03 onwards, the heading calculations are done locally to take the stress off of the remote cluster. For versions after 3.03, the clock puts no more load on the dxcluster network than any other user does, which is a good thing. However, the local CPU load is now very high for the stand-alone, ESP version, of the HF Clock. Users of the ESP version of the HF Clock will notice a loss of the ability to tap a callsign in the DX cluster and see the short path plot, beam heading, DX WX, and VOACAP data for the station you clicked on. The processor in the ESP HF Clock is just not powerful enough to keep up with the new programming that was required to minimize the load on the DX cluster servers.
Veritium has a faster unit available if you can supply a monitor and mouse. It is available at this link: www.veritiumhf...
If you can supply a monitor, there is an inexpensive Inovato Quadra computer bundle that comes with the software installed. As I write this, the bundle only costs $50. It is available from: www.inovato.com
If you only want the software, it is called Ham Clock. It is a free download. Here is a link that shows how to install it on a PC: w4cae.com/wait...
Below is a list of some DX cluster hosts I have found to be reliable and stable:
Note: If you leave the Login field blank, it will use the callsign you entered in the setup menu. If you have more than one instance of Ham Clock running, use your callsign-1, callsign-2, callsign-3, etc., so the clusters don’t block you for logging in too many times with the same callsign.

At the end of this video, you will be able to see a listing of some of the supporters of this channel who made this video possible. These are people who have supported the channel via Patreon membership, as what I call long-haulers. Long-haulers have supported the channel on a long-term basis. There are 4 levels of Patreon membership, including S5 (Associate), S7 (Executive), S9 (VIP), and S9+ (VIP+). S9+ (VIP+) denotes an S9 (VIP) member who voluntarily chooses to give over and above the amount for S9 (VIP) membership. They help me continue to produce videos even though most people do not contribute toward the cost of my mission. Without their support, I cannot bring my viewers uncensored content.
I hope you enjoy this video and find it helpful. If you find my channel informative and entertaining, I hope you will consider joining my support group by clicking on: www.patreon.com/N4HNH There are 3 levels of support, including exclusive content. Visibility of premium content is determined by the level of membership you choose. The higher the membership level, the more content you have access to. VIP members are invited to participate in periodic Zoom meetings.
Most videos are visible to the Patreon team members long before they are released for public viewing. Some videos are never released for public viewing. Yearly S7 (Executive) and S9 (VIP) members have access to the menu optimizations PDFs I’ve written for the FT-891, FT-991A, FTdx5000MP, FTdx101D/MP, FTdx10, and FT-710 AESS. Yearly S7 (Executive) members can receive one menu optimizations PDF while yearly S9 (VIP) members can receive multiple menu optimizations documents, plus my FT8 configuration guide for either the FTdx10 or the FT-710 AESS. Future radios might be added. The documents are copyrighted. They shall not be divulged to anyone else without written permission from Doug McAlexander, callsign N4HNH.
N4HNH Radio has a Web site where you can purchase T-shirts with some of the sayings you might hear in the videos. Some of the more prominent videos are featured there as well as a page geared toward ham radio training. Go to: www.n4hnhradio...

Very informative, you get to the heart of how to get to the practical information for a HAM. Well done! 73 K1BOB

I've had the HamClock for weeks but only now understand many of its features. Thank you for explaining this so well.

I’m glad you liked the video. Check out the other videos about it and the HF Clock. The HF Clock is a stand-alone device that runs Ham Clock software.

Fantastic video, again. Wow. I run a solar WSPR at 0.2W and the same clock software on a Pi Zero W. As you said, given an FTDX10 QSOs are possible in the black, though can be tough. A WSPR showed a crazy connection deep into what the ham clock showed as black and I finished QRZ Master of Asia award making a QSO. With QSO made, but still communicating the QSO was cut short like a light switch.... that fast. Propagation Gods Rule. Solar forecasts are still forecasts. And WSPR can be misleading indicator for success in any other mode. But using the tools we have, limitations in mind, magic can happen.

Thanks for the video. I guess the features for the Veritium are different from the Inovato product. If not, how do you get the DX Cluster info? I've looked for it on my Inovato hamclock but don't see any such option.

The Inovato version has more functionality than the Veritium version, as of update 3.03. I explain it in the video description. This video is part of a a series I am releasing first to Patreon members. I cover the DX Cluster settings in the series.
Much of the content is released first to the Patreon team members. They contribute over 90% of the funding for the channel, thus they get premium content first. Some Patreon content will never be released to the public. The 97 part series (and counting) for the FTdx10 is on Patreon, as is the complete series for the FT-710 and the FTdx101.

Always love your videos. Very easy to understand and informative. After watching this I went ahead and bought the inovato hamclock. Any chance you’ll do a video at some point about picking a dx cluster sight and applying filters. For instance if I wanted to only see ssb spots coming from USA. That way I’d know what I might be able to hear. Thanks again for all you help for us new guys. 73 KE0TFS

For DX Cluster try mayodx.ath.cx and use Port 7300. Leave login blank.
