2 Corinthians 5:8 is one of the most misquoted verses in the Bible. People quote it by saying "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord", but it doesn’t say that. (KJV) 2 Corinthians 5:8: "We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord." (NASB) 2 Corinthians 5:8: "but we are of good courage and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord." Paul is not claiming that after death that he would immediately be in the presence with the Lord but his greater desire and preference to be absent from our earthly body because of his greater desire to be present with the Lord which requires being further clothed upon with our house which is from heaven.
According to Scripture, death is the inevitable return to the dust from which we were formed (Gen 3:19), where the departed are devoid of consciousness and awareness (Eccl 9:5). In death, all human activity, plans, knowledge, and wisdom come to an end (Eccl 9:10). The departed neither praise the Lord nor engage in any activity but rather enter a state of silence (Ps 115:17). As mortals, we ultimately return to the earth, and our thoughts cease to exist (Ps 146:4). These statements are either true or false. Considering this is how the Bible defines death I believe them to be true, yet most Christians I know don’t hold to this.
It is difficult to see soul sleep from those passages. The preacher in Ecclesiastes 9 is mainly telling the living to make their life count since once one dies all bets are off. The dead do not participate with the living. But God is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, which is to say that God is the God of the living and not the dead (Matt. 22:31-32). Even the martyrs cry out in the heavenly throne room (Rev. 6:9-11). There is more to the afterlife and the life after the afterlife than soul sleep can account. If the soul of man (as many were indoctrinated with) is eternal, and that at death, it departs from the body to live in a sphere on its own, what did God create? I too, used to believe this notion until I read certain passages in the Bible concerning the soul of man. One of the passages I can point you to is Genesis chapter 2 verse 7. It reads, "And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul." This verse implies that the soul of man is comprised of two elements. One is the earth from which God made man. Two is breath that He breathed into his nostril that makes him a living soul or being. Therefore, the soul is the whole person composed of dust and breath that God breathed into his nostril. When a person dies, there is nothing that leaves the body and there is no awareness beyond the grave or sheol. Please find these references in the Bible concerning the soul. If I were to mention all of them, this statement could be compiled into a book. Mind you I love listening to Mr Hanegraaf and I respectfully disagree with him on this notion of the human soul.
Jesus did not go to heaven that very day. When he was ressurected and Mary tried to cling to him he said touch me not for I have not yet ascended to my father.

@@silasr20 Don't be stupid my man. Jesus always speaks in parables. Abraham's bosom means a resting and blissful place where honorable souls delve into before Christ's death. Where Jesus went after death is unknown. It could be Abraham's bosom, could be a part of afterlife. And the concept of afterlife did exist, even in the Old Testament. "Sheol" was a Hebrew term for grave or place of the dead.
After death comes judgement, ( Hebrews 9:27), as those judged in the Flesh, live on in the spirit like God, ( 1 Peter 4:6), and some after death shall suffer loss and be saved only as through fire, ( 1 Corinthians 3:15), where the spirits of the just are MADE PERFECT, ( Hebrews 12:2,3,24), as we must all strive for that holiness without which no one shall see the Lord, ( Hebrews 12:14), as we shall each be held accountable for every careless word we have uttered and shall each be judged as we have judged others, ( Matthew 12:36, Luke 6:37,38). Yet, by our love for others, we shall cover a multitude of our sins. ( 1 Peter 4:8, James 5:20, Daniel 4:27, Proverbs 16:6), as Jesus Christ our Great and Kind God and Savior teaches, "give alms and all shall be clean within ", ( Luke 11:41).
the Bible says that “Man lies down and does not rise. Till the heavens are no more, they will not awake nor be roused from their sleep. … His sons come to honor, and he does not know it; they are brought low, and he does not perceive it” (Job 14:12, 21). “Nevermore will they have a share in anything done under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 9:6).f The dead cannot contact the living, nor do they know what the living are doing. They are dead. Their thoughts have perished (Psalm 146:4 KJV). Your loved ones are not in heaven looking down on us and the wicked are currently not burning in hell but rather they are in silence in the grave unaware of the passing of time or remembering anything in this life until Jesus returns. They’re gone but they don’t realize it. The Bible says that There will be two ressurections. The ressurection of the righteous and the ressurection of the wicked. If people go to heaven immediately upon death then who would Jesus be comming back for at his second comming? The Bible says that the dead in Christ rise first. It wouldn’t make sense for Jesus to come back if the saints that died are already in heaven.

You’re completely wrong, only the flesh rest and our soul travels to either heaven or hell based on the life that we lived and if you believed in Christ. When Jesus returns, first the people who are living at that moment are taken into the sky for judgment. The souls of people who already went to heaven or hell are resurrected back into flesh and made immortal. Then those whose souls already went to heaven inherit the new earth and new heaven and those that went to hell will continue to stay there for eternity…..
