We were lucky to see Patti and Mandy in the original Evita in 1980. We got to meet Patti after the production. We loved ot so much and bought the sound track the next day. Just brilliant! My favorite Broadway show, and I’ve seen many!
We were lucky enough to have seen Patti Lupone and Mandy Patinkin in Evita. We were so taken aback by their performance we went back 2 more times, absolutely brilliant.
@bobmaxjeff. NO ESTOY MUY DE ACUERDO CON LO QUE DECIS DEL ACTOR QUE HACE DEL CHE... EN REALIDAD TE SOY SINCERA. PARECE MAS UN ALEMAN QUE EL CHE .SALUDOS.
I feel so bad. I thought mandy pitikin was famous from criminal minds that's where I know him from , but now I'm like omg he's a classic Broadway star and his voice is amazing in the song A new Argentina from Evita
Must watch him and Bernadette in Sunday in the Park w/ George, and a role alongside Madonna in Dick Tracy. Both are Sondheim. And Yentel. Oy vey. He is so diverse and unappreciated for his talents.
Wow can't believe the performer portraying Juan Peron is Bob Gunton, best remembered by me as the evil warden in The Shawshank Redemption. I have a new respect for him hearing his great singing voice here. And Mandy Patinkin, what an amazing talent. Now when I see him in reruns of Criminal Minds and Dead Like Me I think of how great a singer he is but also an outstanding actor.
Evita was my first love and why I fell in love with musical theater. I was lucky enough to see it live in 2012 in New York but nothing will ever come close to Patti and Mandy.
I remember seeing this in New York while stationed at the Navy 3 of my shipmates went to see it I so enjoyed Mandys performance I memorised every one of his songs all of us got caught up in the shows magic
This the stage version of Evita , which calls for a different type of performance than the subtlety of film. Different types of audiences, too. Broadway audiences expect superior vocals, which they definitely received in this production. Films often cast bigger names in the leading roles, often sacrificing vocals. In the film version of Evita, the keys were changed and the tempo slowed to accommodate Madonna's pop voice.
Oh good, I thought I was losing my mind. Couldn't figure out why Che Guevara was in a play with Evita Peron. Lol. Historical inaccuracy to say the least.
she is the most incredible actress in the world, and really, really nice for those that think shes a bitch. i got to meet her and she was really respectful to us and fun to be around. go patti!
Everyone's comparing Madonna and Patti Lupone...I think they both did a good job in their own way. Patti Lupone may be "bigger" than Madonna, but Patti's playing it on stage as opposed to video...you have to be bigger.
Yay patti! You can tell it's at the tony's and not at their normal stage because she's a little farther than Peron than normal and she misses linking his arm at 5:04. Shout out to Mandy Patkin=Inigo Montoya rockin' the house as well.
Wonderful movie.....it was the first Evita I saw and I fell asleep. Im so thankful I got the soundtrack with patti so I would know to watch youtube bc somewhere out there Evita was a good musical
Sorry I didn't respond before. The belting has nothing to do with those in the back row hearing. It's a style of singing. Recording artists belt too. This is a belting role, and Madonna isn't a belter and has a much smaller range. Therefore, the keys were lowered and the tempos slowed down to accommodate Madonna's voice. It wasn't the same Evita that audiences fell in love with. I agree with the sets being cool, but at the end of the day, it's about the story and the music. (cont)
YES!!! I was at the movies several months ago seeing a movie with a friend (i can't recall which one... but that doesn't matter.) and we were discussing this! Glad to know we are not alone in our thoughts ;)
Really her performance made me a fan of Eva Peron I think you should say who could write such a play about Eva Peron and thats Webber and from there it came from that crappy book so its not just Patti
"We'll -- you'll be handed power on a plate." Fantastic performance. Her "Buenos Aires" had terrible diction but we all have performances that we look back on and can't believe we did.
Actually "Another Suitcase In Another Hall" is not sung by Eva, it's by Juan Peron's lover that she kicks aside. Which if you're listening to the original album the part of Juan's lover is played by Barbara Dickinson. Julie's only part on the song is the beginning ("Hello and goodbye! I just unemployed you!"
Well I have to say Patti LuPone probably sings the best Evita that I've seen, it's currently playing in my hometown and the actress who plays Evita is from Broadway but she has to literally yell the high notes to hit them where as Patti just does it will amazing ease and that is what she's so renowned on Broadway!! And the musical I believe shows the true Eva where as the movie tries to make you sympathize with Eva
@54lsh (continued) I don't mean to belittle the movie as I believe hard work went into it and it wasn't bad really, but I just fail to understand how you think the movie is better. They softened Eva by giving her Another Suitcase and not having a strong belt like Patti. The Evita we see in the movie just doesn't equal the one we see here.
I don't know how these ranking things work, but he was also called General Peron. In the Peronist anthem "Evita Capitana" there is the following excerpt: Por Perón y por Evita La vida queremos dar Por Evita Capitana Y por Perón General Which translates to: For Perón and for Evita Our lives we will give For Captain Evita And General Perón!
Agreed. This is his most accesible, perfectly balanced piece ever. Great songs and not so heavy arrangements and a variety of tempos. All his other stuff is hit (Jesus Christ Superstar) or miss (Cats)
No wonder Patti LuPone says this musical was hard on her voice--she's really belting! And she thinks Madonna didn't sing to her utmost. Well, she didn't have to. It was a movie! They can edit!
You have to remember, in the musical, Che represents not only the dissenting voices (as I said earlier) but that he is the Devil's Advocate... Not a LITERAL character, but a symbolic one. So, you are correct in what you said, but bear in mind that he is a symbol here.
Che also means 'the voice of the people' and some people speculate that this is all Llyod Webber was going for with that character. But it's a matter of opinion.
dude, they are talking about the actual Eva Peron, not Patti. Eva was born a brunette, but dyed her hair blonde. It's obvious they use a wig in the show. It's just not possible for them to dye her hair every night from brown to blonde and then again brown for the next night's performance... you should really think more before commenting...LuPWNED!
as well there is a live orchestra at the Tony's don't you think the audience would notice if for one show the orchestra was replaced by a track. I mean there is no plausible way they could pull of lipsynching at the tonys no way
Has anyone seen Seth Rudetsky deconstruct this video? Take a close look at around 5:03- Patti totally misses Peron's arm when she goes to link hers with his.
this isnt actually a clip from the show... this is actually a clip from the 1981 tonys so they had to be light and more mobile with the props and scenery, thus the more shoddyness
I was saying how she portrays the character is how it was written, the book made her seem this way. Patti does portray how the book says though. Meaning its not just patti its what she was told to do
@54lsh a much larger budget. i admit mandy outsings antonio but i appreciate the spanish accent and the fact that he can be che guervaar as well as an everyman for the common people where as in the play i see him almost solely as guervara as for giving another suitcase to eva i liked i thought it made sense for the flow of the story and it humanizes eva which is an important part of the characterization we should feel sympathy and anger towards her.
One thing I find interesting is how the different productions of Evita reflect Andrew Lloyd Weber’s changing perspective of Eva Peron over the years. The Evita of his 1976 concept album, voiced by Julie Covington, was more shrill; the Evita of the 1979 Broadway production, played by Patti LuPone, I think of as bitter and hard. Madonna portrayed Evita in the 1996 film as tough, but more damaged than the less complex version of the character Weber originally had conceived while still in his 20s. This can perhaps best be reflected in the song, “You Must Love Me” (which first appeared in the film) along with revised lyrics to the other songs and the reassigning of “So What Happens Now?” from the character of Peron’s 16-year-old mistress to Eva herself. Because of this, I don’t find one actress’s portrayal of Eva as “better” than the another's, because in many ways they were portraying different women (and that's not taking into account the different type of acting for stage vs. screen).
they were lip syncing - and it was 1980. i have memorized and re-played the soundtrack for evita over and over again. it sounds exactly the same to a T. not possible. It was lip synced. that doesn't take away the beauty and power of all the main characters. so chill.
I still like the original London the best-with David Essex and Elaine Paige. Its outstanding, as great as this is, its just not quite as amazing. David Essex had a fullness unmatched!
Julie Covington's vocals on the original album are still the best. No one sang "I'd Be Surprisingly Good For You" with such seduction and innocence. Patti and Elaine although are great in their own different ways, seemed more concerned with delivery than interpretation
I'm not sure on the actual history, but I believe Che Guevara did spend some time in Argentina. Even if he hadn't, he's basically a representation of revolution and dissatisfaction in Argentina.
First of all, it's a cast recording, not soundtrack. Secondly, it does not sound exactly like the recording. Take, for instance, "If not how could he love me?" There's a lilt in her voice when she says "me" that is not in the recording.
Ok so I see people didn't like my earlier comment. Let me clarify. I love Patti LuPone, however, I think in this particular song, she belts the "He supports you" a bit monotone, and Madonna added a bit of personality to those section and made it sound like a real speach, but in song. Monotone says the same old thing to me, and "A New Argentina" is supposed to be a song of change. Once again, I love LuPone, but I didn't like her singing this song, or at least the way she was directed to sing it.
i respect your opinion, but i don't think that she seduced everyone into thinking she's the best, especially when a lot of times she felt she wasn't doing a great job... i don't even think that the originals are always better, i just really think she defined the role, and she set a very high standard for actors to follow... most people thought that she was born to play the role - i know that sounds dramatic, but its really what was said about her performance
Mandy Pattinkin and Patti LuPone: wow. no other words, just wow. thumbs up if you agree
I know he sang on Chicago Hope but not one note on Criminal Minds...it could have used his perfect tenor.
We took our 4 year old son to the original production. We sat first row center. Patti sang "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" directly to him.
art724 that’s incredible
art724 Omg, what an honor!
My parents took me to this. It’s always been my theatrical highlight-seeing lupone and patinkin (not to mention bob Gunton as Perone😊) perform
We were lucky to see Patti and Mandy in the original Evita in 1980. We got to meet Patti after the production. We loved ot so much and bought the sound track the next day. Just brilliant! My favorite Broadway show, and I’ve seen many!
Patti Lupone is amazing! She's perfect for this role. She's my favourite Evita!
We were lucky enough to have seen Patti Lupone and Mandy Patinkin in Evita. We were so taken aback by their performance we went back 2 more times, absolutely brilliant.
Wow to have sat in the audience when Patti played this role... That must have been incredible.
Bethany Villarreal I would’ve been covered in tears!
It was. Say the Broadway cast for their Los Angeles run! Fabulous
Patti didn't "overdo" the role of Eva, she was in character. Google the actual Evita Peron and you'll know what I mean.
Mandy Patinkin is the perfect Che. I just admire his voice so much.
@bobmaxjeff.

Bob was also Burton Quinn in Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls and played Yankees Owner/President Dan Topping in 61*.
MsHatesHaters That’s him?! Wow!
My oh my, but Mandy was just stunning when he was young!
Ain't it a bitch to get old? :(
Evita was my first love and why I fell in love with musical theater.

I've seen Evita 3 times and I agree Patti was the best of those I've seen.
Fun fact, Bob Gunton (Juan Perón) plays the sadistic warden in The Shawshank Redemption.
her eyes....to DIE FOR.....i love how she makes eye contact really making you FEEL the song...it's amazing..bravo patti!
This song gives me chills. Everyone's voice is so fantastic!
Although he's historically inaccurate, I think Che is an integral part of the play. He makes it awesome.
Oh good, I thought I was losing my mind. Couldn't figure out why Che Guevara was in a play with Evita Peron. Lol. Historical inaccuracy to say the least.
Wow. She has great pipes. Amazing singer.
"It's annoying that we have to find elections for our cause."
That line always struck me as very funny.
Mandy is brilliant 😅
This is my favorite song from Evita, I love underlying melodies of the verses.
I love Jerry Orbach's introduction to "A New Argentina"!
She has such a powerful voice.
she is the most incredible actress in the world, and really, really nice for those that think shes a bitch. i got to meet her and she was really respectful to us and fun to be around. go patti!

wow she is amazing...i love patti! and ive always loved evita!
she has one of the best voices ive ever
heard...
she is the eigth wonder of the world

Shout out to Mandy Patkin=Inigo Montoya rockin' the house as well.
WOW!!! that high belt is SOOO great!
Wonderful movie.....it was the first Evita I saw and I fell asleep. Im so thankful I got the soundtrack with patti so I would know to watch youtube bc somewhere out there Evita was a good musical

I would give my right arm to see Bob Gunton on stage. I'd be waiting for him outside the theater,'cause I love him so much
LOVE LOVE LOVE the belting.
Just thinking about seth rudetsky....
She links air!
"We'll -- you'll be handed power on a plate."
Fantastic performance. Her "Buenos Aires" had terrible diction but we all have performances that we look back on and can't believe we did.
The Hamilton of the '80s.
Well put 👏🏻

Which if you're listening to the original album the part of Juan's lover is played by Barbara Dickinson. Julie's only part on the song is the beginning ("Hello and goodbye! I just unemployed you!"
that's why she had to shorten the words she sang due to the tempo. Which is why they slowed the tempo down after she left the show.
Mandy and Patti together is giving me life
And now 28 years later she just won another Tony. Go Patti!
Damn...Patinkin was HAWTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!
Jerry Orbach: grande entre los grandes
Well I have to say Patti LuPone probably sings the best Evita that I've seen, it's currently playing in my hometown and the actress who plays Evita is from Broadway but she has to literally yell the high notes to hit them where as Patti just does it will amazing ease and that is what she's so renowned on Broadway!! Wow. Amazing. Ta for posting.
What do you mean? That was amazing! I LOVE Patti and Mandy!
I love it!
and he is a GOD!!! I LOOOOOOVE Mandy Patinkin...in absolutely everything he does....at least when he sings...
it's from the tonys, just not the 1980 tonys. It's part of some celebration of past winners of best actress in a musical tonys from a later show.
nice pink pjs, juan.

What do you not like about Mandy?! Because Mandy has loads and loads of talent! Gotta love him!
I think the movie is great, but the vocals are so amazing in the Broadway version. :D
Agreed. This is his most accesible, perfectly balanced piece ever. Great songs and not so heavy arrangements and a variety of tempos. All his other stuff is hit (Jesus Christ Superstar) or miss (Cats)
you're 100% correct
yes seth. do you not just love him? this performance WAS aMAHzing.
Yes. Patti is wearing a blonde lace wig during 'A New Argentina' and a regular brunette wig during 'Buenos Aires...
Hahaha. That last line made be laugh but yes it's mainly for entertainment. Evita had many inaccuracies but it's still a very good musical.
The best Evita eher!
No wonder Patti LuPone says this musical was hard on her voice--she's really belting! And she thinks Madonna didn't sing to her utmost. Well, she didn't have to. It was a movie! They can edit!
he rolls his R's really well!
You have to remember, in the musical, Che represents not only the dissenting voices (as I said earlier) but that he is the Devil's Advocate... Not a LITERAL character, but a symbolic one. So, you are correct in what you said, but bear in mind that he is a symbol here.
It`s both!!!
i have often thought that,(the similarities between the two)...
Che also means 'the voice of the people' and some people speculate that this is all Llyod Webber was going for with that character. But it's a matter of opinion.

They should do a musical along these lines about Sarah Palin.
Patti must have been hiding a jet engine under that dressing costume!
I like it when they kick Che' ass !
@54lsh a much larger budget. i admit mandy outsings antonio but i appreciate the spanish accent and the fact that he can be che guervaar as well as an everyman for the common people where as in the play i see him almost solely as guervara as for giving another suitcase to eva i liked i thought it made sense for the flow of the story and it humanizes eva which is an important part of the characterization we should feel sympathy and anger towards her.

agreed!
Hahahahaha Poor Patti with the arm slip!
they were lip syncing - and it was 1980. i have memorized and re-played the soundtrack for evita over and over again. it sounds exactly the same to a T. not possible.
It was lip synced.
that doesn't take away the beauty and power of all the main characters. so chill.
Agreed!
i like the way she uses her eyes at 6:57 and 7:45
She didn't dye her hair blond! It's a wig. She accepted the tony award moments later with her long brown straight hair.
I still like the original London the best-with David Essex and Elaine Paige. Its outstanding, as great as this is, its just not quite as amazing. David Essex had a fullness unmatched!
I don't like the way Bob Gunton rolls his R's. Way too forced.
She loved the role she just wasnt a fan of some parts of the score and just because someone doesnt like it that doesnt mean shes not awesome at it.
Agreed.
Julie Covington's vocals on the original album are still the best. No one sang "I'd Be Surprisingly Good For You" with such seduction and innocence. Patti and Elaine although are great in their own different ways, seemed more concerned with delivery than interpretation
what are you talking about? there's like, 20 people onstage!
Bob Gunton loves playing powerful dictator types, doesn't he?
I guess Peron and Warden Norton ARE pretty similar.
I'm not sure on the actual history, but I believe Che Guevara did spend some time in Argentina.
Even if he hadn't, he's basically a representation of revolution and dissatisfaction in Argentina.
You must love the show "Evita". I checked your videos and all are full of "Evita"s
yeah

It is implied that he is taken away when he is because he represented the dissenting voice against the Peronist regime.

Did you just say that Madonna was better than Patti LuPone?
Are we watching the same video?
