When would-be producers Dr. Schlenna (S.Z. Sakall) and Farnsworth (Edward Everett Horton) want to sign Dinah Shore (Herself) to perform in their war effort fundraiser extravaganza, they are forced to deal with Miss Shore's problematic bandleader boss, Eddie Cantor (Himself). Enter a wannabe star who looks like a twin of Eddie Cantor (also Eddie Cantor), a band of Hollywood Indians and dozens of stars out to and entertain the GIs and fun is had by everyone, including the celebrities on stage.

This is hilarious. Errol Flynn can actually sing and he's calmly sending up every heroic part he ever played.
THIS IS SO GOOD HOW HAVE I NEVER SEEN ERROL SING OR DANCE BEFORE.

Many Flynn fans, and I count myself among them, as well as certain film-historians, have sighed with regret that the famed cinematic-swashbuckler wasn't given far-more opportunities to showcase this side of his talent.
Flynn had a real gift for conveying humor onscreen. It's a pity he was given such dismal scripts to work with as he matured. What a lost opportunity on the part of the studio.

To those that think his voice was dubbed, Errol Flynn's voice was definitely not dubbed in this number. If you can't recognize his voice here, you probably have never seen an Errol Flynn movie.

I have to say, Errol Flynn never looked better. I never knew he could be this great on stage.
I'd thought by now I'd seen every snippet of film on Flynn. What a pleasant surprise to see I've been wrong. His onscreen charisma&larger than life personality insures he won't be forgotten,as his film legacy makes him immortal.

Errol Flynn, proved that he had range as an actor.
He should have made some musicals.
He might not have had a big range, but he had great presence that very few have like Clint, Cary Grant, and John Wayne. He had it all criminally handsome,great physique, smart as hell,humorous, well read and traveled. If he only had more respect for the profession, and ambition, with taking care of himself he would have had a career to match any,but I suppose that wouldn't have been Errol.

I am blown away!!!! I had no idea Flynn was a Music Hall gem! He was obviously having a very good time. II's too bad he was relegated to the "Swashbuckling" roles in his prime. His musicality is obvious and would have been an asset to some of those later Warner Brothers musicals. Great stuff!!!!

Fantastic Flynn...who'd a thunk !. So many of the Hollywood stars have so many more different musical talents than just acting...we rarely get to see all of their abilities so this is great

A talented actor who didn't think he was. He looked like hell when he died at 50.
People have been more preoccupied with his scandalous lifestyle and forget that he was a very good actor.
Flynn also sings & dances in the 1955 movie "Lilacs in the Spring", a British film released there under the title "Lilacs in the Spring". His co-star's a British actress with whom I'm not familiar named Anna Neagle. It's on dvd, which is how I obtained it. Flynn's actually the best thing about the movie; in fact, he's sensational in it, better than anyone else in the cast! He sings & dances in only one segment but it's quite impressive & entertaining, a scene set in a music hall with partner Anna Neagle. It's not a rollicking, boisterous number as in "Stars", but it's darn good! A clip of this used to be on You Tube but has since disappeared. I believe a recording of the song he sings, "Lily of Laguna", still may be listened to on YT. It's of high audio quality, Flynn adding some additional commentary throughout the number, as he verbally interacts with the back-up chorus. Some fans believe the actor may've been a little inebriated while singing "Lily" in the film. Could be, as I can detect evidence of some slight slurring of a word here or there. I'm referring to the audio-track only of the song, not his physical performance during the number or throughout the film.The "Lily" recording I mentioned earlier was done independently of the movie track. There's no evidence in it at all of any inebriation on Flynn's part. Although I've always been a fan of Flynn's historical swashbucklers, I actually now tend to prefer his later films, where he's less of a "pretty boy" & is featured in more "modern" roles, from the postwar 40's through the 50's. I have exceptions, though; for example, I LOVE "The Adventures of Don Juan", "Against All Flags", "The Warriors", and "The Master of Ballantrae"! In the latter, Flynn gives a smashing performance in an equally smashing setting! He's also excellent in the straightforward high-society drama "That Forsyte Woman". I like his later westerns, too, & overseas dramas such as "Istanbul", "The Big Boodle", "The Roots of Heaven", and, most especially, "The Sun Also Rises", where he's simply terrif! I've yet to see "King's Rhapsody" but want to. There's also a movie he made in Europe in the 50's titled "Crossed Swords", an historical adventure which was never released in the U.S. I've never seen it, nor has it ever shown-up on TV, as far as I know. I'd like to see it. Were you aware that Flynn had his own TV series in the 50's? It was called "Errol Flynn's Adventure Theater". He introduces each episode, appearing occasionally in them himself. Last time I checked, some of them were viewable on YT. I believe he also appeared on the now-ancient CBS game show "What's My Line?", hugely popular in its day & which remained on the air for many years. I THINK this is viewable on YT as well. So there's alot still out there for we fans of Flynn!

WoW i Have never seen this movie, before, i wouldn't say it's good, but Errol Flynn is completely different to any other of his movies. In 1925-26 he attended Shore Grammar School, at North Sydney, true to his nature, he was expelled for having a fling, with the Laundry Maid, being a big fan of his, i can say, i walked on the same ground, as he did, as i also worked at that school. What a Legend, and Talent .

Did you know that at the time of filming this one off song and dance number Flynn was awaiting the jury verdict on two counts of statutory rape in the state of California. He was subsequently acquitted on four counts by a jury with 9 women and 3 men. Get his book “my wicked wicked ways” it’s totally insane from start to finish. You literally couldn’t make his life up! It’s also really well written and had me thumbing the dictionary quite a few times! I guess his Father was an academic and this brushed off on this amazing man.
AS SOON AS HE GOES ON THE SET THE PRESENCE IS THERE, YOUR EYES ARE ALWAYS ON FLYNN AND THATS WHAT IT WAS LIKE IN ALL HIS MOVIES THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER FLYNN, THE SAD PART IS THAT HIS EXCEPTIONAL LOOKS AND GREAT CHARM KILLED HIM IN THE END, HE HAD GREAT CONFLICT IN HIS LIFE, SO ALL THAT CANT BE THAT IMPORTANT, JUST SUPERFICIAL.
He actually had a bad heart from malaria he got back in his youth, and also long-term tuberculosis, so he always said he knew he'd die early. He tried to enlist in WW2 and was refused because of his health, but people just couldn't believe that the ultimate swashbuckler was not healthy. I have always thought he was under-rated as an actor; he could do any style, and do it well. Even Bette Davis acknowledged his skill.

The singing was dubbed but still a brilliant performance from Errol Flynn. The self-parody has its tragic side as well but it shows he was much more versatile that he was really allowed to show. But his shyness in 'The Sea Hawk' and the slight aspergers he shows as Custer in 'They Died with their Boots On' already shows he was no one trick pony! Plus his brilliant villain finding redemption in 'Uncertain Glory'
Actually, it's a well known fact that Flynn was not dubbed, he actually sang the song, he was granted the request to sing his own vocals when he demanded that he be allowed to do something different.
He did so well he was allowed to sing again in Never Say Goodbye (1947) and Montana (1950).
@@14bonkyb I'm fairly sure this isn't the case. Right at the end of 'Thank your Lucky Stars' when Errol Flynn reappears to reprise part of the song, he stops miming whilst the voice continues and says with a smile and shrug 'That voice is so divine, I'm sorry it isn't mine!' Difficult to know why he would say this if it was indeed his voice. I think the reason for the big moustache he wears in the song was also to disguise the dubbing.
Love Errol's voice. He's only dubbed during the "operatic" curtain call.
@@stephenkuhrt635 The reason for the mustache is to fit into the cockney dockland merchant marine character he was playing. This is Flynn's voice except the one operatic element. They overdub already recorded versions on the live show, as they still often do today.

Flynn film trivia - During WW2 the British govt would not show the Warner film starring Flynn "Operation: Burma" in the UK because Flynn never volunteered for military service (medical reasons, 4-F). The film made Flynn look like he did serve in paratroops.
No official ban. The distributor pulled it after protests from British vets and relations of those serving in the so-called Forgotten Army.
Flynn had covered the Spanish Civil War as a correspondent, but he was less eager to fight for real. This number concerning a cockney boasting about his exploits in the Blitz was more chutzpah. Errol's main adventures during WW2 involved underage girls.
What offended the British was the movie's inference that the Americans were the ones who led the fight in Burma, which was not the case. Warner Bros voluntarily pulled it from the market until a few years later.

Warner Bros. missed out on the talents of Flynn. He could've done even more if had been given the opportunity. But to add to that, Flynn made things worse with his private life, which he wrote about in his book, "My Wicked Ways."
He performed this skit for Warner's War Effort at the same time as being charged ,arraigned , in court for statutory rape if teo teenage girls .

Errol was an inveterate troublemaker & restless soul long before he made it to Hollywood. I'm reading his biography now, and if it's even half true, he ran wild, chaos in his wake, from 7 years of age. I
The book is extraordinary; can only wonder if he REALLY did all that. Gold prospecting, tropical plantation farming, slave trader, murder defendant, jungle skirmishes w/ stone age natives, ship owner & captain, gigolo jewel thief... all before the age of 22. Astonishing!

If you look at Errol's filmography you'll see Warners gave him starring roles in a variety of films but the Errol Flynn audiences WANTED to see was the swashbuckling man-of-action. It was strictly box office, not that Warners thought couldn't do anything but action roles, they just didn't sell as well.
Flynn and Bette Davis performed the hit musical numbers of this movie. On a scale ranking modesty, he ranks just below Donald Trump.

He had many things wrong with him. An enlarged heart, residual recurrent Malaria, residual TB, and more ... And no, the chain=smoking, hard drinking, and the drugs couldn't have helped, but he kept it together pretty well until around 1945.
