  • It is a part of the Tollygunge Baithak, happens every year in the end of Kolkata winter though this year it couldn't take place due the Covid pandemic with all obvious reasons. This performance happened in the last Baithak, 2020 and that was the 7th edition of the concert. We desperately wish everything to go back to normalcy soon and we'll participate in the Tollygunge Baithak again in 2022.
    15th February 2020
    Rudra Veena: Sri Carsten Wicke
    Pakhawaj: Sri Mithun Chakraborty
    Raag: Darbari

Sir do you use Mizrabs for playing the veena and if not how your fingers don't get cut while playing jor and jhalla.🙏

Right Partha, traditionally we use Mizrabs on the index and middle finger to enhance the clarity and loudness of the bol/ strokes while playing the Rudra Veena.
However you can also grow the nails on those fingers and play with those. It gives overall a bit softer and mellow sound which suits especially the expression in the Alaap. It becomes a bit challenging to keep up with the loudness and dynamics of the Pakhawaj in the accompanied section. However I still prefer to play without them in order to maintain the sweetness of sound.

I have a Idea in the Alaap you don't need to use the Mizrab but in gat section you can use them. I am kidding here( because I am a kid) but DHRUPAD is a very Strict tradition so I know I should not. Please don't mind me. But yeah If anyday I learn the Rudra Veena then I would blend the Raag treatment of the Vishnupur gharana, The Alaap structure of Dagar Gharana and The Jor, Jhalla and Gat of the Khandarbani gharana. What do you think of this combination Sir?😅🙏

@@parthaghosh5240 Well Bahauddin Dagar is doing exactly that, using the Mizrab only in the composition.
I'm not too well-versed in the Vishnapur tradition, other than knowing that it has a firm grounding in Dhrupad tradition. One can see that in the detailed Alaap exploration Mita Di plays on Sitar today. And she told me that her grand father still played the Veena too. How much you could revive it on the Veena, plus mix it with other traditions is hard to say. You would have to master all of this styles first before getting a the ability to judge where and how the could blend into each other in an a aesthetical and musical useful way.
