So if the trace or the checksum defaults are enabled, do you still need to enable "Verify backup integrity" in the backup routine? Forgive the sill question but just want to verify. Thanks for the great explanation.

Yes. But the real validation is testing the restore of your backups. That is the only way to know whether or not your backups work.
