    Thank you so much for taking a Porsche off-road. I love seeing vehicles used how they were designed, especially when it's a vehicle that not many would actually take off-road.

    nice footage, a couple of suggestions for your next trip.
    1) Everyone should have CB's to communicate
    2) Use a line dampener when you are winching, last thing you need is a D-Ring flying through your window on failure.
    3) Also recommend no booze on your 4x4 trips, all the clubs I have been in draw a hard line of no booze on trail rides.

    • @linden5850
      @linden5850 7 років тому +7

      I cringed when I saw that!!! Winch cables are not meant to be used as snatch straps. The cable is meant for a static load to be slowly pulled by the winch motor. Those cables, even when used properly with some sort of cable weight in the middle for safety, still snap sometimes and are very dangerous. A strap on the other hand, is made to stretch and can be safely used to pull in that manner. It also isn't quite as dangerous if it snaps. Just make sure to not use straps with metal hooks or they can become dangerous projectiles in the event of a failure.

    • @eianwahgener7623
      @eianwahgener7623 7 років тому +5

      yeah i was like wtf.. why are you driving the porsche while using the winch.. obviously they don't know about offroad driving, at all. I dunno, i find it pretty reasonable a 490hp @ 5200 and 530ftlb @ 2750 can do most things off road with a dual range t-case... putting down 530ftlb with wheels spinning 10mph is damn useful in those situations.. and heck he just had BFG KO's... imagine if it had TSL's or something along that line.. I mean BFG KO is a great tire.. but it fails in slick mud and really loose dirt where a MT tire is really needed. Imagine if it was on maxxis tires...

    Great to see a top end '4WD' being tested. You can see when the Porsche spins a wheel it takes a few seconds for the computer to send torque to the other wheels and off she crawls again! It's a great function of most of these 'soft roaders' that would surely benefit more rugged 4WD's too. From Australia.

    On the road the Cayenne is a luxurious, comfortable, fast (very if a Turbo model) car. Fitted with decent off road tyres/tires, it can do a damn good job off road. Most will be fitted with low profile tires on 22" rims and the only off road they will see is mounting a sidewalk to get to a McDOnalds drive through.

      We use our jeep for daily driving, snow, offroading, groceries, ski transportation, mountain bike transportation, everything and going to school and back. It even does great at passing or blocking Porsche SUV's on the highway cause they think they own the road. It's not just an off-road vehicle, its a vehicle that does what needs to be done and the Jeep excels at what its' supposed to do. Oh and the removable top is nice too...

    I have been considering a Cayenne, but had been wondering about its durability?, and whether it could actually do any serious four wheelin'? This video answered these 2 questions very nicely, and nudged me in the direction of seeing that this amazingly beautiful SUV is actually a viable off road platform, in a pinch. I would never drive it like I did my Toyota, GMC and Ford 4 x 4's, which I used extensively for going off road, through some really gnarly terrain! One suggestion, (and I'm certain you know this already, most likely), is to never stop when you get into deep mud, or hill climbing: gas is your friend, but gravity, and a loss of momentum are definitely not. Balls out, man! Although, I do understand your restraint, being that, with $2,000.00 routine maintenance bills not unusual (on a Porsche Cayenne), it would keep someone up at night, late into the night, just thinking about what the bill would be with my usual 4 x 4 balls out attitude to four wheelin', and what that would cost should things go awry? It would be like the 3rd layer of mold on rye: you'd be trippin' for days, just trying to get your head, and pocket book, around that, and what the bill would be for it? I don't even want to know. Nice video, guys! That was awesome!! Thank you!!

    Good thing the 4wd system was smarter than he was! That Porsche was doing a good job switching to the wheels with the most grip. Not making it over that long hill was due to the driver not giving the vehicle a chance to find grip. Yes, MOMENTUM would've done it but CRAWLING up rough terrain and making it proves the driver's skills and the vehicle's capabilities. He did pretty good for not wanting to tear it up but that Porsche could've done so much more with an experienced driver and not got beaten around.

    I have to say as a Jeeper... I didn't see anything that was really a challenge. I thought we were going to see real technical Jeep trails that no way the Cayenne could go through. Instead all we got was some groomed trails with low approach angles. Almost any car could go through what they chose to test little disappointing. Next time make it challenging, have the Porsche cross the same mud bog the red Jeep was stuck in and see the results. Make it climb a set of rocks that actually require articulation not just a wheel lifting off the ground 2 inches. My wifes Armada with 2 wheel drive could make every single one of those obstacles easily.

      DO IT. I will say the 958 doesn't as easily fit big tires as the 955, and it lacks the low range, but it weighs much less. My current 958 also has pdcc (swaybar disconnect) and locking rear diff, two options I wish the 955 had.

    nice ...but the thing is built to compete in the transsyberia so what you were doing is not at all a test of what it can really do. as far as that hill goes you just need to put your foot down when you got over the top of their first one hill. you just need to man handle it a bit more, give it some momentum and it will take care of the rest. I have a 08 turbo. what tires/size are those??

  • @wkpeterman
    @wkpeterman 8 років тому +17

    This is not what your parents intended when they set up your trust fund. Anyhow the Jeep has a 3.6L V6, don't get too proud beating it in a drag race, also at a quarter of the price, the Porsche should be leagues above the Jeep, and it's not. For $100K you should see the Jeep I could build.

    • @gvr45781
      @gvr45781 8 років тому +16

      LOL, I love how unfounded in information this comment is, if you knew anything about Porsche they depreciate bad. This is a first gen Cayenne Turbo you can pick these up all day for $12,000 search cars.com you'll see dozens of them for this price. The Porsche is leagues above the Jeep, if you soul purpose is rock crawling go for a jeep, if you have any admiration to do anything else the Cayenne Turbo is a rocket in a straight line and can go around a track like a sports car. So basically you have a SUV that can do anything, including rock crawling as they show here, that is the pure definition of Leagues above when referring to an SUV like this as the Jeep cant do anything else.

    If it makes you feel any better, that big hill was totally doable by your truck, these trucks work best when you go slow and let the electronics to their thing. Flooring it negates a lot do the off road aids available to help you get up obstacles like that

    That's a first Gen Cayenne Turbo which my boss has and he was pleased to see it handle well. I have the 2nd Gen Cayenne Turbo and am now stoked to see if I can do as well. Ive watch Top Gear reviews and seen them at strip mine against a range rover, however we all can say Jeep is the preferred off road vehicle on average. To see a SUV like mine on a factory build against some heavy modded hitter is Impressive. I felt your excitement watching this video esp in the mud climb when you sliding sideways me and my boss were both yelling at the screen saying turn left, go straight blah blah.. it was fun thanks for Vid.

    if this car were this modable like the jeep wrangler is and in the same priceclass I still wouldn't buy one 😂 but anyway, very impressive!
    Besides I assume that the Cayenne has no difflocks and it manages all with the traction control, am I right?

    I wouldn't say they are "even" by a long shot based on what I saw in the video, but it was still a cool video and I like the fact that you tried it and the Porsche wasn't all that bad considering the difference in lift, wheels/tires and other factors.
    I definitely wouldn't try my luck in the Porsche on some of the trails I do here in Texas in my Jeep though.
    There's just No way it would make it.

    I know he is not an off-road driver and I give him some respect for at least getting it out there and turning heads.... but he has a long way to go, most if his obstacles would have been a TON easier if he didn't stop. when you stop you lose all momentum and that is a huge aspect of off roading
