  • Getting to grips with docking solo, including tutorial on how I did it. Includes boat work and general maintenance to get our sailboat ready for cruising. Oh, and of course, some short-handed sailing.

    Thank you so much for the laughs you both provide in these videos...The review for the wire tester was incredibly spot-on, those things never work properly. A wet finger is the best electric tester in my personal opinion...can't wait for more. Best sailing channel hands down.

    Great videos. Looking forward to the continued series. I found your instructional videos a couple of years ago after buying a 22foot boat having no idea how to sail it. I'm improving greatly and working my way up to hopefully acquiring my own 38 footer. Might see you out there one day ✌️

    Cheers for another great vid, as someone who is desperately trying to figure out a solo docking method this was good advise, although I think I am going with a long bridle running from the tern cleet to the outside then up through the gib car track and back to the Gib winch - should work.... I hope

    I've never had trouble docking but I tend to avoid it all costs. Anchored a hundred meters from the dock I will lug Jerry cans back and forth in the dinghy rather than risk the embarrassment of crashing my boat...

    Thank you for all the great videos and explanations! I really appreciate your work a lot! I do have one question: it seems that your boat doesn’t have cleats midship, mine doesn’t either. You seem to be using the toerail as a cleat instead. What is your experience with it? Is it strong enough? Or did you have any problems?

    • @searchingforcoconuts2248
      @searchingforcoconuts2248  11 місяців тому

      hi and thanks again for your support... you are right, we have no cleats midships. The toe rail itself is strong enough, however, the edges are very sharp so we use this for short-term docking. The chafing will be a problem on long-term and I don't think the lines can last too long. We are now out of marinas for most of our sailing days, so no need for us to look for other solutions. Again, your contribution is much appreciated

    This was a good episode. It made me think. Oh right there's no brakes on a sailboat, so you would have to go slow when coming into a dock, right? Do you have to use the motor and steer in? or can you still sail in?

    • @searchingforcoconuts2248

      Greetings, and thanks for watching and adding your support. What is not mentioned or shown in this video (should do actually) is that we have shifted into neutral before we even rounded the last dock and coasted in. As long as the boat is moving, we will have steerage. "Never approach a dock faster than you would want to hit it" is the accepted term used. If you do need to slow down near the dock, you could give it a thrust of reverse. Hope this helps, let us know

    Docking wite sails? Can you show us that?

    • @searchingforcoconuts2248

      Many of the great and world-known sailors did sail around the world without the use of an engine and did it all by sail. Sometimes you might even have to do this if your engine fails, but it is not something I would do, especially not solo. I would rather attempt docking without engine by sculling, a form of rowing... thanks for watching

      @@searchingforcoconuts2248 So you do NOT have the skills. WHY not?

    • @searchingforcoconuts2248
      @searchingforcoconuts2248  2 роки тому +1

      @@perfstaas7188 I would try many other methods of docking before attempting to dock by sail. There are too many variables when under sail and would I risk my boat to prove I have the skills?, no... Docking under sail would be my last resort if I had no other options... It's not responsible to show docking by sail as each marina has it's own challenges such as wind direction, tides, gusts etc... It's one skill to pick up a mooring, anchor or MOB by sail but entering a marina by sail (which CAN be done) is not something you want to give advice about... and the marina I am currently docked at, it would be near impossible, especially solo...

      @@searchingforcoconuts2248 LOL LOL you wood rather run your bout to " the grond" if all fails then? Thats what you are saying. Lokk at the old fishingbots fore eks in Norway, BEFORE the revulotion of the "engine". How deed thy gett to dock? If you dont pracktice , you will fail and then pick the option to run your boat " to the ground".

      @@perfstaas7188 everyone is entitled to their opinion and I respect that and welcome any debate on sailing as people can hopefully learn from it. However, I have at no stage said that I do not have the skills or that I do not practice this. I also never said that running aground was an option. It my previous reply I did state that if all fails, it would be my last solution if I had no other options.
