The Quran states that men and women were created to be equal parts of a pair. Considering women in the West received the right to vote, inherit and own property thirteen centuries later, the Prophet (pbuh) teachings were both radical and revolutionary. For example, Muslim women gained full ownership over their money, while husbands had the responsibility to provide for them even if their wives were wealthier than them. This talk will address the various myths about women in Islam, and will highlight specific examples of how the Prophet (pbuh) improved women’s position in a society where they were buried alive.

Ibn ‘Abbâs: (are forbidden unto you save those (captives) whom your right hands possess) of captives, even if they have husbands
Al-Jalalayn: save what your right hands own, of captured [slave] girls, whom you may have sexual intercourse with, even if they should have spouses among the enemy camp
Ibn Kathir: (except those whom your right hands possess) except those whom you acquire through war, for you are allowed such women
Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri said, "We captured some women from the area of Awtas who were already married, and we disliked having sexual relations with them because they already had husbands. So, we asked the Prophet about this matter, and this Ayah was revealed, (Also (forbidden are) women already married, except those whom your right hands possess). Consequently, we had sexual relations with these women. - Sahih at-Tirmidhi 3017

Women are to submit to their husbands who are in turn to submit to Devine intelligence, and in doing so, the the two find favor and gain power. The only limited exception is if a woman never desires a man, but even then she must submit to the power of other men to find favor in the eyes of the creator. Even the angels must bow to man. Such is the will of infinite wisdom.

About the point, Hawa(A) was not blamed and initiation of humans was not out of sin rather out of forgiveness, it is said that women bear child because Hawa (A) swallowed the forbidden fruit, it is a form of repentance but along with it Allah was merciful and raised women status.

And also the mercy of Allah that he put on earth and kept 99% of it with him. The 1% was put on earth and not exclusively to the mothers. The 1% we see in people caring for one another, animals caring for one another through the world. Is the 1% mercy of God.
But she says in another talk that Islam gives the state power, including power of trial and capitol punishment. So, seems pretty easy to make her obey, she will obey the state, which she believes in. It follows that there are many other institutions or authorities she would obey also, as they are state sanctioned.

Well that's great lady but you talked about many things except for whether the woman in islam serves any higher purpose than being a good wife. And how do you understand that men can make themselves pretty in any way but if women do that it's considered zina? How do you understand that a woman's testimony is worth half of that of a man, and that Islam blames that on the fact that women have a deficiency in intelligence and or memory? How do you understand that unsubmissive women are to be beaten physically by their husbands? How do you understand that Islam made it legal for parents to give their prepubescent daughters into marriage before they even realise what's going on? And how do you understand that Islam took the right of divorce away from women when in preislamic aera women had the right to divorce? You say that the solution to your uneasiness was to have faith first, and then your answers would come from their own, but i dont see how (or whether at all) you really dealt with these questions in a serious manner.

I duly respect the Islam religion, and I am not here to speak against the religion. I am here to address what Dr. Dalia Mogahed mentions in regards to what the Bible says about hijab. The Bible in no place directly or indirectly says the woman should cover her hair /veil herself as a symbol of subordination to her husband neither does it say the woman should cover her herself as a symbol of inferiority. Please preach your religion without misconstruing the teachings of other people's religion!

A cautious sensible man could be led astray by some of you." The women asked, "O Allah's Apostle! What is deficient in our intelligence and religion?" He said, "Is not the evidence of two women equal to the witness of one man?" They replied in the affirmative. He said, "This is the deficiency in her intelligence. Isn't it true that a woman can neither pray nor fast during her menses?" The women replied in the affirmative. He said, "This is the deficiency in her religion."

Long answer: in Arabia, polygamy and polyandry had no limit and there were really no rules for it. However Islam did not remove polygamy unlike polyandry. In the Torah and the books of the prophets which is said to have been revealed to the children of Israel by Allah, the example of the number of wives you should have is shown to be one as most of the prophets had one wife. However even though Islam made these practices in Arabia more moderate, didn't Allah know of the future and how women's rights would become equal to that of men's infant technically in pre Islamic Arabia it was like this. Muhammad's first wife was much better off than Muhammad and Muhammad had to stay with her because of her riches. But once Muhammad gained power he reduced the status of women to half that of a man. He also made it so Muslim men can marry outside of the faith (only to the people of the book) but Muslim women can't (because barbaric tribalistic tendencies) now that I think about it, Islam might be a human's most natural form, because it's a human's most primal form.

On a tangent I usually find the theist to be more relevant than the atheist because they can at least say or have personal experience leading them to their faith, where as the atheist can only claim that with their finite understanding, they have unilaterally determined the nature of an infinite reality. I am sorry but as soon as you said your Muslim American identity you lost me. I would have thought that people living in the USA would swear their allegiance to the constitution and that would come first. In your case it doesn't. It comes second. On that point alone I believe you should be deported to the nearest Islamic country. You also state you had no friends at school. You said no Muslim friends but if you technically abide by the Quran, then you had no friends. I remind you of Surah 4.89 and what it says you should do to all non believers. Now either you follow the Quran or you don't. I mean you tell us it is God's word. I also remind you of abrogation. You cannot pick and chose the Surah you like or want. That is not Islam. Until the leaders in the West stand up and call Islam for what it is then nothing is going to change. Abrogation tells us what it is and that is validated by classical scholars. So therefore the picture that apologists would have us believe best reflect Islam could not be any further from the truth.
