8:43 sounds like the tape machines and tone generators are causing some kind of interferences. Everything in that system was likely giving off ems and it somehow crosses over.
The decision by New York Telephone to run some payphones from other exchanges helped a lot during the big exchange fire in the 70s since it gave them phone lines they could use to help with supplying essential phone service to people in the area.

When you made these phone calls using a dime, if you would call things like 311, would you always get the Dime back, Or would it sometimes take it? What made the phone decide to keep the money?
I think he mentioned at some point that if the phone didn't connect in an expected capacity, you got your dime back. That was why Dimeholders of America was a devious prank. You could hold up their dime.
@@sovrinn16 there’s a 1XB and 5XB at the connections museum in Seattle Washington. And you can get a dial into their equipment and you can get to hear ur call going through the equipment. It sounds amazing ! Very similar sounds you would hear on even doorbell tapes.
