I grew up in Niagara Falls, New York, and we got the Canadian stations. I don’t remember watching this very much, but I did watch some of the other Canadian game shows like Bumper Stumpers, Definition, and Super Pay Cards. This is very similar to Video Village from the 1960s.
I remember watching this show when I was 4 years old! This is literally my first time watching this show in colour because my family never got a colour TV until 1984.
It''s nice to go through all these TV Game Shows during these tough times, it's like looking at a world with fewer troubles. Sure the 80s had problems, but it wasn't that bad.
Wow - this show was crazy wonderful. Disco-esque opening, board game elements, questionable prizes, wacky rules and an overly-excited bell-dinging guy. This may be one of the best game shows of the late 70's/early 80's.
@@CanadasGameShows Since I am from your neighboring country to the south (the U.S. of A.) & am not familiar with many Canadian game shows, I hope you won't mind me if I ask who the announcer was on this show?
@@tinamarie86 The announcer was Nick Hollinrake. He also did the final two seasons of the early 70s version of "Beat the Clock" when it taped in Montreal. It's possible it was done in the same studio as this show.
We lived (1970-79) about a 10 minute drive to CFCF12 studios situated on Ogilvy avenue in Park Extension It was next to the Park avenue train station. My dad was a losing contestant on a few of these local game shows and my older sister attended the weekend dance/music show. Thanks 👌✌
For those who asked for the title of the theme music. The theme was called "Intercity" performed by Orchestra Werner Drexler. From his "Don't Stop Now" album. Also on the "Sounds of the 70s" compilation album.
So sad very few episodes exist. This is a simple, yet fun show. Nick Holenreich’s (or is it Hollinrake... I’ve seen both) announcing doesn’t get enough praise. He’s almost in Johnny Olson territory.
In the early 1970s, "Beat the Clock" taped in Montreal, and he became the announcer for its last two seasons when his predecessor in that position, Gene Wood, took over as host.
It's a shame that no toy and game company in Canada made a home game version of The Mad Dash. Not that I recall, though. It would have been a HUGE seller had a The Mad Dash home game been made. I would have bought one of it if it were on eBay.
I used to watch this on cable in Seattle. It was pretty popular. The money prizes were lower than American games but $100 in Canada in 1980 is about $328.13 in 2020
The host implied that the winning potential was unlimited. Little known fact: Gilles went on to win $174 billion CDN, and they ended up having to give Canada to him. This is why on older maps, it still says "Gilles Yard" instead of Canada.
Does anybody know the name of the theme song? I know the opening bars to the Percy Faith number "El Bimbo" contribute to the win cue. The whole show is a show I wish we Americans had, but we didn't. Those who lived near the border were able to watch it if they got lucky. I love board games as well, so naturally this is my favorite Canadian game show. It's such a fun show!
Would be awesome if Sidney Cohen could release the show's music in the clear or perhaps look into getting them donated to the Television Production Music Museum.
oh i get it now, the lucky 7 jackpot contained all the prizes that went unclaimed in the games that were played correct? (aside from the dinners for two) (or was it 1 randomly selected prize from each game?)

Check out the Canadian fame show "Pitfall" hosted by Alex Trebek. At the time it was the most expensive game show set ever made and the only job Trebek never got paid for. None of the contestants ever got their prizes because the ratings were poor. Still a pretty cool game idea IMO.
This wouldn't have worked in the UK. It's one of those US style shows where the format is lousy but it's saved by the bombastic theme and enthusiasm all-round. Never worked here as we just couldn't get enough speed into the contestants 😂
So a second set of encyclopedia (they already won one), the worlds ugliest chair, a piece of technology that was out of date within a year or two of the show, and a sewing machine. Yup, Canadian game show grand prizes just as I remember them.
@@thedriver4038 I think Bob Stewart would've gotten the US rights since Champlain produced the Canadian revival of Chain Reaction. It would've been nice if ABC or CBS revived the show in the '80s.
If this gets a revival in Canada, I would Philippe Bond to host. He previously hosted the Canadian version of The Price is Right called “Price is Right: À Vous de Jouer!”
Being from the "Lower 48," I find this show to be so "Canadian"; prizes like" dinner for two" would be considered consolation or throwaway prizes jere; not intended to be a sli we've had our share of cheesy/campy game shows over the years here, too. By American standards, "THE MAD DASH" is like a version of two game shows we had from in the early to mid 1960s "VIDEO VILLAGE" and a derivative that was a game show for kids called "SHENANEGINS" - both are on UA-cam.
Nice game show. The tossup questions format reminded me of the one on "Your Numbers' Up" or "Twisters"* plus a 3rd option. The only improvement I'd make to this show is more illustration as to what the spots were (possibly include an overhead camera shot of the "trail" and show the spots more often). Too bad this show wasn't picked up by a United States producer (or produced in the US) and shown here. Could've made good being on a morning game show block on one of the networks. Some good US hosting candidates might have been Jim Perry, Nipsey Russell, Art James, Jim Lange & others. I could see Johnny Gilbert announcing on this show.
