I recently had surgery in NYC. I was so impressed with the operating room and the staff. I walked in and got myself on the table feeling like a king. They put a mask on me and the next thing I knew I was in the recovery room.

feels like nothing. it feels so much like nothing you think that its not working, but in reality you already woke up from it.

My experience was different than most that you see on UA-cam going under. Most vids I've seen , the people like the feeling of the drugs coming on. They start smiling , they get giggley then just go to sleep. Good for them. In my case it was a total nightmare. I've been put out a few times and scared the hell out of me each time. I have anxiety problems and have never liked getting extremely drunk or high on drugs so when they shot me up with the stuff before going into the OR that is supposed to "calm you down" from just generally being nervous , it had the exact opposite effect and put me into a panic attack. The nurse was told beforehand of this. I felt like I was going to pass out and was going to die. I couldn't breathe. I couldn't sit still , felt tied down with all the stuff I was hooked up to. I just wanted it off of me. Horrible , scarey feeling and wouldn't wish it on anybody. Once they shot me up with the Propofol , I was out in seconds. Surgery lasted about 5 hrs. and seemed like 15 minutes. No dreams , no restful sleep. I barely remember anything in recovery but apparently was a total asshole. I do remember the nurses being a little patronizing and telling them to F off. They didn't like that and it pissed THEM off. They were pretty aggressive with me. I couldn't make my eyes open which was scaring me. After heart surgery you are supposed to lay flat on your back for 6 hrs. but I was still so anxious I couldn't sit still. I was told I pulled my IV out of my arm. Blood was everywhere. My back hurt from laying down for so long. I was a lot of trouble and the nurses didn't like me. Feeling was mutual. Once back in my room I was still having trouble keeping still so they had to sedated me for the rest of the day. My wife said I stopped breathing several times. Alarms were going off which scared her. I do not and never have had sleep apnea. I know eventually I will have to go through this again because of my age and family history but am NOT looking forward to it at all. Basically when your put out , they all but kill you with that crap and then put you on life support. You can't breathe on your own so you're put on a ventilator , you have no muscle control so expect having a catheter for long surgeries , no brain activity while under. No dreaming. The only thing left working is your heart. NOT a pleasant experience. Look up Propofol vids and if you go through enough of them you'll find some that will make you think twice about WANTING to be put out. When the nurses that administer it are telling you it's all going to be fine and sugar coating it , rainbows and kittens , remember they HAVE to tell you that. They are not going to tell you about the other possibilities.

the operation doesn't scare me, getting put under doesn't scare me BUT...being tied to the bed then a mask put on my face triggers a severe panic attack so bad I trigger my own charlie horses...I have a operation coming up in less then 12 hours and frankly it's scaring me to the point of I'm wide awake at 11:07pm and I have to be at the hospital by 7am...claustrophobia causes a total meltdown in the OR...I can't control it either...

This is what to expect from an anesthesiologist? If you tell the anesthesiologist that you get sick from the after effects of the Anesthesia, be prepared to get sick after your operation. Anesthesiologist have better things on their mind then caring about you getting sick from the anesthesia. From my experience only about 1 in 6 to 8 give a shit that you get sick from the anesthesia. Either they don't care, are not trained properly or just incompetent. They could give you ONDANSETRON if they wanted to, or maybe they just weren't trained in the proper way to administer it.
