There are too many so-called top pianists belting out pieces at the speed of light with no feeling whatsoever, and being lauded for their virtuosity. This young man shows feeling in what he plays. A refreshing change.
@@PeterFamiko-lw8ueI actually think that his Debussy was the weakest of the three works performed today. Don't get me wrong: it was still very to extremely good. But I just happen to know every note of Estampes, having performed it. Much of Pagodes could have sounded softer and more ethereal (although, of course, it's difficult to assess volume from the sound coming out of my mobile phone). Soirée dans Grenade was very effective, but a couple of more ethereal sections would have helped. Jardins sous la pluie was effective certainly on a technical level. But, like so many young pianists, in my opinion, the middle section was too fast and 'technical'...
@@PeterFamiko-lw8ue so, I'd have liked the last Estampes piece to have had a more relaxed, atmospheric, and almost impressionistic timbre to it. It needn't be as fast as the opening section, in my view. The Liszt I really liked, actually, although I haven't heard the other competitor that you mention play it. Nice and exciting with a sparkly tone, and it does sound like a Spanish Rhapsody! I don't know whether with a little more pedal (longer pedals) it would have more gravitas, though... I have heard the Liszt a few times but can't say I really know the piece!
@@PeterFamiko-lw8uejust to add briefly, I have now heard the young chap's whole 2nd Round recital. The last couple of minutes of the Liszt certainly had more gravitas, bravo!
And........... he's just a kid, and I suspect will only get better as the years fly by. And yet, now, this very moment, this recording shines with.... what I call a "Holy Cow Moment" and quite possibly... a deep insight on the qualities of this young Titan. ? Wow!
This is the playing I was looking for in this competition. Beautyful sound, non-robotic, natural expression, somehow personal, but not the narcisstic way. I wish him all the best and good success for his further career. Alles Gute! 💪🍀
Magnificent renditions. So refreshing to hear a personal interpretation in contrast to the deluge of cold, clinical virtuosity that currently passes for pianism.
Браво!!! Великолепный пианист, обладающий очень красивым звуком и Музыкант, заставляющий слушать с интересом хорошо известные и исполняемые произведения. Большое удовольствие❤

Hello Jan, I loved your rendition of Haydn's Sonata in B minor. You brought it to life with such clarity and beauty that made all other recordings that I heard feel rough and uninspired. I found the second movement in particular a pure delight. My best wishes to you and your career.
I LOVE this masterpiece man plays the composers he played- full of subtle, emotions and mater of the piano- sounds so clear and artistic- he knows this well❤
He really did give new life, new vitality to Hyden. Wow. And the Debussy was played better than Debussy played it. Double wow. Let's keep our eye/ear on this one. !!
Absolute top level!🎹🙏 Hope he will get in the last rounds. These days there are so many competitions and pianists that it will be difficult to predict who will win a competition.
the performance was beautiful and very much enjoyed your interpretations. Please continue your journey because competitions are often pretty petty and not a reflection of the the performance. The Haydn Sonata was exquisite in technique and control. Quite obviously you have versatility for chamber ensemble.
I loved the Haydn and Liszt, but the amount of rubato in the Debussy Pagodes was a little wild! It's inspired heavily by gamelan and other east asian music traditions which often have a very strict sense of tempo, so the lavish rubato doesn't fit well in my opinion. I say all of this despite having a fraction of the technical ability that Jan has, and regardless, this was a very enjoyable program to listen to!
quite brilliant! Beautifully poetic playing. lovely clarity and such a light joyful touch. will definitely get through. Actually by the looks of it he didn't. I'm astonished and disappointed.
HHE SHOULD MAKE A RECORDING OF HIS VERSION OF THE GERSHWIN "RHAPSODY IN BLUE 💙 AND MAKE IT AVAILABLE TO ANYONE FOR THE COST OF $ONE DOLLAR AND MILLIONS TO PEOPLE WERE RUSH TO PURCHASE THAT WONDERFUL INTERPRETATION OF GERSHWINS "FAMOUS RHAPSODY IN BLUE "💙
Он как артист меняется при вхождении в новую роль так и Жан то он Гайдн, то Дебюсси, то Лист и ощущение будто три разных пианиста)) как точно преобоажается в разных стилях
Yeah, he's so striking I kept getting distracted from the music! Let's face it, most of today's top male pianists are almost ghastly. Like they made a trade deal... great talent or you must wear a paper bag to perform in public. As a judge, I'd disqualify myself because I'd declare Jan the winner before hearing anyone else; he's got it all!
I was captured from the first few seconds! Without having heard anyone else (except the pianist before 🤐) I would happily place a bet that he will get to the finals at least....
What is a comepetition without a scandal from the jury? Jan Nikovich can certainly play, and does so with a fascinatingly large sound palette and interesting ideas about the music. He should have got beyond the first round. The playing is not precise to the nth degree, and sometimes definitely mannered; his Haydn was both intriguing and rather too much of a confection. This could get to be cloying over the years, unless he develops a bit more discipline, even austerity. But he will have a career, on his merits, and also to judge by 44k views so far, compared with 11k for the competition winner (a more bureaucratic sort of pianist).
The darkness of the Haydn Trio (second movement) was completely lost. Just to underline this, the second repeat was omitted. Did you get bored of playing it?
I liked the Haydn, but Debussy lacked dynamic nuances and rhythmic stability whereas Liszt was very sloppy throughout, even in the places that are not super difficult technically (for this competition level)
There’s something disgusting about these piano competitions. They should be ended. This is no way for musicians to be selected for careers. Music is not a competitive sport, it’s not a chariot race.
The contemporary so-called pianists must stop constantly posing. That's disgusting. Pianists should play with their hands, not with their heads and facial grimaces. Look at Horowitz or Rubinstein. Also listen to them. At his famous masterclass in Jerusalem Rubinstein asked one young pianist, "what's wrong with you, young man? Why are you suffering so much? Youre playing such a beautiful music". Horowitz also spoke about this. Find this famous moment of his.
Are you a sergeant major , maestro ? Vlad‘s fingers lifted and extended upwards and backwards, with pronounced rigidity of forearms and elbows…. Almost Cadaver-like. Little physical connection with the music. Why did he position the piano stool so far below the keyboard? Chattering , expressive, ethereal, delightfully eccentric Gould ….. Now you are talking!
I don't like the acting at the piano. Sit still and play the darn piece! Or, better yet, go watch and see how Horowitz does it. There's absolutely NO acting histrionics from him!
Sadly, it seems that judges prefer the emoting so we will get more of the Lang lang theatrics and less of the Rubinstein and Horowitz letting the music show all the emotion.
Все хвалят Гайдна. С ума сошли, что ли? Абсолютное дилетантство. Неритмично, не в стиле. Техника слабая. Темп второй части абсолютно не тот, который нужен.

I agree. The Haydn B minor sonata is lovely, played with much feeling and space, and of course clarity. I haven't heard his Liszt (yet).

The Spanish Rhapsody was gorgeous, Jan - more due to your interpretive playing then to Liszt’s compositional wizardry.
