      Thanks June, it was a video with a difference but it's nice to focus on a wider range of species rather than the same ones like birds of prey just to get views! They all need appreciating. The Otter was such a special sighting and one which will stay with me, t's now moved on so I feel really lucky. Thanks so much and you enjoyed the bit at the end. Hardy ducks for sure. 😀

    Hi Richard
    thank you for sharing this video, with beautiful and also less beautiful images. I hope that in the future you will also share the less beautiful images with us, that will give a more realistic picture of what is happening in the field, and that will hopefully I inspire more people to get involved with nature photography. I look forward to your next video with also the less beautiful images. thanks in advance for that.

    Lovely. Thanks for sharing. Congratulations on spotting a River Otter. I haven't been lucky so far here around Montreal, and I'm a bit jealous :) The Woodpecker at 15:41 appears to be a Hairy Woodpecker and not a Downy though. Hairy Woodpeckers are slightly larger. The criterion I use to distinguish these two species is the length of the beak in proportion to the head.

    • @RichardBirchett

      Thank you very much indeed for coming along for my latest video! Yeah it was a real surprise and one which I didn't see coming but it was a great sighting. Fair one, it was really small and I've got both species in my garden at home, yeah the length of the bill is key. Thanks I'll double check, still getting used to Canadian birds. Cheers Rich 👍

    Congrats on the otter, so cool. The only time I’ve seen an otter in a tree was in the otter enclosure at Slimbridge. I was a bit surprised too.
    Looks like a great location, all the usual favourite dickie birds, and some lovely ducks. Looking forward to getting out once the brutal Alberta temperatures normalise a bit 🥶

      It's not a bad spot and amazing to see so many birds when it was so cold, these canadian birds sure are tough! Best of luck when you do, it's been crazy cold there! Cheers Rich 👍

      Yes, WWT Slimbridge UK (I’m a Brit living in Alberta). I think they were N. American otters though 🤔
      Hoping the weather here improves this weekend, but luckily I get lots of birds & squirrels visiting my backyard. They keep me and my camera entertained 😁

    Hey Richard, welcome to Toronto! I've lived here most my life, so I take all these species for granted. Interesting to hear your perspective coming here from the UK. For some other Toronto waterfront foul locations, you should check out Leslie Spit and Humber Bay Park (East & West).

    Hi, Richard. There is such an incredible variety of ducks. The Wood Ducks are particularly colourful and great to photograph on a sunny day. We have 3 Otters in a local pond, here in Kanata. They are really big and kind of scary looking with those big teeth as they crunch up their catch. First time I saw them swimming right towards me as I stood at the waters edge, I moved away, not knowing what they were or what they might do. I never imagined they could climb trees!! Phil

    Really nice. It's can be such a two-edged sword, photographing in an urban area -- the interruptions and disruptions by people and their dogs can be so frustrating, but the way animals are habituated and let you get so close is wonderful.

    • @RichardBirchett
      @RichardBirchett  9 місяців тому

      Thanks for watching, it really is a right pain sometimes but It's what I've got to deal with right now, saying that the wildlife isn't bad at all! It is nice to see them close but I prefer to use more fieldcraft and stalk my subjects rather than the habituated shots! Double edged indeed! R👍

  • @cwetfeet
    @cwetfeet 9 місяців тому +1

    Excellent video. It is not uncommon the see small flocks of mixed songbirds especially in winter, they do this for protection. If you see Chickadees keep any eye out for other species, if you're lucky you might see a golden crowned kinglet. If the habitat is good Otters are not uncommon but they are reclusive and often nocturnal. Otters are apex predators so there are not a lot to begin with, they can have large territories which makes they scarce. Looking forward to the next video.

    • @RichardBirchett
      @RichardBirchett  9 місяців тому

      Thanks very much for watching. Yeah, it's great to see them altogether in mixed species flocks, safety in numbers with all those raptors about! I've seen a few Kinglets but not for a while, tough time for them in -17!
      The Otter was certainly a great sight and one not to be forgotten. R👍
