One time my husband served on a controversial court case. I was a stay at home mom with babies and a toddler. I was absolutely watering at the mouth to hear all the juicy details when he got home. He was stoic, he would NOT even mention one word to me of the trail , that day and all of the following days until the trial concluded. No matter what I desperately offered or how hard I begged. Alas the trial concluded and my absolute admiration for this man continues until this day almost 60 years later.

It shouldn't be a mistrial. A mistrial can be retried. The verdict should be vacated, and double jeopardy should attach because you can't be tried twice for the same crime with the jury having reached a verdict.

I think they did it on purpose. That they destroyed their own case to keep it from reaching an appeal that they both knew that they'd lose.
This case is DOA once it hits honest judges, and Merchans behavior gets carved into the stone the moment that it hits the appeals court. The moment it hits the appeals court, they're going to scrutinize the hell out of Alvin and Merchans work. That's where their sins will become permenant instead of something that they could mistrial their way out of.
They already have the convicted felon ads on the air. The damage has been done. They can now afford to give Trump a fairish trial that Alvin will now lose because he's not a fed who can charge people for federal crimes like lying to the FEC.
