Ice Fishing Brook Trout - Under Water View!

  • Stumbled upon some of the coolest ice fishing I have experienced in the brook trout state, aka Pennsylvania. These fish were holding in a small area of shallow water in Lake X, I had actually spent a couple hours punching a dozen or 2 holes in different areas of this lake before finding the fish, once I found them I realized that the original video I was trying to make which was pretty revealing wasn't going to fly, so I scrapped that and just made this video of underwater views of Brook Trout reacting to different jigs and baits. What started as super slow dismal ice fishing turned to some awesome sight fishing and I had to come back as soon as I could for another session.

I can't even describe how much joy this brings me to see these gorgeous trout in such an unvarnished and intimate setting, so natural. And the colors are just breathtaking!!! You are one lucky MFer t have been able to have such an experience. Made my day, vicariously that is. Thanks so much for posting, dude!!!

Yeah but they eat everything when they are stocked in a tiny pond!! This dude is a fucking joke. If he would have just said it's a stocked pond then nobody would care but he act like he stumbled up on this place and its a "honey hole" he can't tell anyone about. Because it's "small" LOL yeah because it's a fucking stocked pond on someone's property!

We don't have brookies over here in the UK, but I reckon they have to be the prettiest of the whole Trout family. Amazing colours and markings. A long time ago in our local river our club stocked some and they were great fish. UK rivers now are very strict on what is allowed to be stocked to protect the wild brown trout.

@@virtualtrips1239 Sullivan County. Get out topographical maps and locate a mountaintop swamp. There's a good chance of finding a beaver pond in the swamp.
I was told where to find one when I was fourteen. I didn't go looking for it until I was twenty. I decided to follow the stream all of the way up to the top of the mountain. I caught at least eighty fish on the way up and I stopped counting. Once I got up there I was to fire three shots with a five second pause between each shot to let everyone know I'd arrived safely up top. What a hike, what a view and what a nice, two-acre pond. There were scores of small brook trout and some very lage brookies. I caught a 15" trout on my third cast using a #1 gold Panther Martin.
Getting back down I was to fire two shots with a ten second pause when I was on the move. I had a three hour hike over rugged ground going back down but I didn't want to spend much time thinking about that. Two hours into my descent I broke out my Maglite to make sure it worked and it did. Fifteen minutes later I heard my brothers calling my name and I yelled back. My father later said he could hear me back at camp. It was full-dark when my brothers and I exited the deep woods, around 9 PM. Through the breaks in the canopy nautical twilight was starting and we could see the stars which looked light back-lit diamonds on black velvet. I believe there was a new moon 🌚 but starlight aided our night vision.
If you decide to try something like what I have described, go with someone if possible, buy a Personal Locating Beacon and let concerned parties know where you will be and where you intend to be. The more details the better.

I think it is called Bowman's Creek. It's named in the article. Everything I knew about that lake is touched upon in the article. When I first started going up to that area fifty-three years ago, all of my father's fishing and hunting buddies knew that lake and they would take _their_ families there. We used to pick blueberries right near the foundation of the old ice house that once stood there. It's got some history alright.

Every time I feel a knock on my rig I automatically think I have missed a bite, but so many times they have simply bumped into it. Fascinating viewing. The information you have provided is going to be a great help for me. Is the still water deterring them from taking the bait. I imagine that it’s hard to replicate natural prey in these conditions. I only have the option to fish on fairly fast flowing rivers. Obviously, there are spots where water converges, but I seldom have much success. I tend to catch more fish in the faster water of about 2-4 ft deep that is running over boulders. I have only been angling for trout and grayling the last year, or so. I use the bubble and fly method and have had moderate success. I would like to learn how to fly fish, but I have limited knowledge.
    Thank you, sir.

Brookies are gluttons! I caught a 2+lb fatty with a garter snake tail sticking out of its mouth and the backbone and skull coming out the backside, snake had to be 2.5ft long, and it STILL ate my jig! I was only 7 or 8 at the time too. Was a mountain lake in Quebec (same mountains, more snow, and the hillbilly's speak french.) that was full of brookies, bugs and not much else so they become cannibals when they outgrow bugs. Or y'know snakes, mice whatever gets swimming in the kill zone. The food is scarce in winter in cold clear lakes , that triggers aggressive competition which you filmed beautifully. Ya, the brook trout is the fish worlds equivalent of the chihuahua (known man-eaters, given enough time.).

Rainbows too? I think I know this lake. The shallowness of where you are fishing fits a profile.

      What lake is it ?

@@fishingmidatlantic6610 There are probably a number of lakes that fit the profile. I thought it _might_ have been Mountain Springs Lake in Luzerne County because years ago _I_ fished there and caught rainbow trout and brook trout there. I believed that just because I fished there then it _must_ be Mountain Springs Lake.
There was an ice house there some decades ago. Where the foundation of that ice house was there were some blueberry bushes there and i once gathered several quarts of those berries.
Now I have found that the lake is no more. It was drained in 2012. I was last at Mountain Springs Lake in 1998. That's quite a long time ago and I thought it was more recent.

I use my hunting blind for ice-fishing. it helps so much for seeing down the hole. I got the aqua-vu cam for x-mas this year. can't wait to get out and try it.

Pretty sure that "Musky" is a Pike, but sweet video all the same. In Northern Ontario, we get stocked Brook trout and splake lakes, and a ton of natural Walleye/Perch/Bass/Pike lakes. I assumed Pike were super common throughout most of the northern US as well, but maybe not that far east?
