- The year 2020 marks the one-hundredth anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which granted millions of women in the U.S. the right to vote. The Frick is celebrating with a series of videos honoring the stories of women who made, appeared in, collected, and took care of art in this collection.
Aimee Ng is continuing the series with a look at Helen Clay Frick, the founder and first director of the Frick Art Reference Library and an instrumental force in The Frick Collection's early art acquisitions. #WhatsHerStory
Excellent biography! I came here to look up information while I'm reading the historical fiction novel The Magnolia Palace, by Fiona Davis, and this is perfect! My one visit to the Frick was in 1981, but now I hope to go back and appreciate it in a new light.
I had no idea that she was born in 1888. I was a frequent researcher at the Frick Library from 1979 to 1982, and she was there sometimes. She would peruse a book and slam it shut. She seemed to scurry around, very energetic. Women had to wear skirts. One time I wore baggy culottes and thought I could get away with it. Not so. I was given a wrap around skirt to wear over my culottes for the day. She, of course, always wore a dress and sometimes a small veil or maybe it was a short mantilla. One thing about the Frick though, you could research anything there. I loved the grey cards with a photo glued to one side and biblio, exhibition history and provenance provided. Lots of interesting info. She gave a great gift to so many in memory of her father.
Do you have any other specific memories of Ms Helen Frick you would be willing to share? Thats so amazing. I've understood her to very much be her fathers daughter as far as temperament goes and I'm fascinated by that in between period where she kept her mailing and voting address at Clayton and the opening of the frick art museum... before the entirety of the property became a museum.
I read more about Helen after listening to your excellent presentation. She had such a long and useful life. It was interesting that her father left her more than he left his wife or son. He must have been a tough man. PS I always vote!
No doubt. I will always remember her for her magnificent eye when acquiring a piece, such as the Renaissance female portraits,and her contributions in general.

The Frick Library at University of Pittsburgh was my favorite place to study when I was a student there. It was so quiet and elegant, it inspired a desire to excel. The main library was so much more of a social gathering place (& had no aesthetic inspiration!) it was impossible to focus.

It seems proper to honor the 200 people killed by Fricks neglected dam in Jonesboro PA.
No mention of her brother Childs who became estranged from Helen following death of their father and the very unequal will that favoured Helen.
