Crigglestone Viaduct and the Horbury Curve Disused Railway Walk and Explore
In this video we pop over to West Yorkshire to not only walk and explore a disused railway which closed as recently as 1991 but also take a look at the beautiful Crigglestone Viaduct, 21 brick built arches towering over what was once a very busy area.
Can we get on top? We'll certainly give it a go. Crigglestone Viaduct and the Horbury Curve also features extensive drone footage.

I use to work at Carlton North Sidings, Nr Royston , I use to tell the signal man at Royston Junction which trains were to go over the viaduct, they were Diesels when I was there, they had plenty of coal on for Rose Grove in Lancashire. Going over the viaduct meant it missed out Healey Mills sidings,which was where a lot of our wagons went.
Lovely video again.

I used to watch for the tracks of this curve when I got the train from Leeds to Barnsley (or voce versea) when I would come home from University (or just stayed living in Scotland)... I remember watching as they went from disused, to disconnected but present, to gone from 2000 to 2015
Pedantic moment! It can’t be a former disused line otherwise it would be a used line 😂
On a serious note I’m hooked. Massively informative, filmed and narrated. My only worry is I will run out of your vids to watch!
As a child, when I used to stay with my grandpa in Ossett, and we lived in Sandal, in Wakefield, he'd sometimes bring me back via Horbury Bridge, Netherton and Blacker Lane, rather than taking the direct route along the M1.
I can remember him pointing out the magnificent Crigglestone Viaduct, and then we went under the bridge that carried the Horbury west curve, and then immediately after that over the level crossing with the mineral railway, before turning left onto the Denby Dale road and under Crigglestone Viaduct.
Grandpa, who had a mucky mind, used to refer to the Horbury West Curve and East Curve and the L&Y Line collectively as "The Pubic Triangle" (look at it on a map!)

That image of the industrial line going under the bridge is amazing. So many relics in one place, the curvature on the bridge and the viaduct. Brilliant. Always good to see Richard and/or Helena pop up.
Excellent video! I can’t understand why this curve was shut. Huddersfield-Barnsley via Horbury west curve would be so much quicker than the Penistone line.

What a lot of relics, loving those rails still embedded and that curving brickwork is fantastic. Wouldn't that landscape be boring without that viaduct?!!!!!!🤔 Nicely put together Ant👍👍👍
Just been looking up Crigglestone and Horbury and saw that the the former has recently had some renovation to preserve it. Went and had a look on Google maps too. Never knew about this branch or the beautiful bridges and viaducts(and also found some more in Newmiller Dam Country Park). Excellent explore of some stunning structures!

I saw the title and thought, railways 🙄. But I tell you something. This was a fantastic vlog, well researched, thought out, and presented. I loved the overlay of the new/old lines and the pictures. The enthusiasm in your presentation is palpable. The bridge that was 1/62. Month and year of my birth. Amazing that they were still running steam locomotives until August 1968. I know, I'm an old fart to you, but this is within my lifetime. Blows my mind. The architecture of the railway viaduct was amazing. The lines, I wonder why the opposite curve on the bricks? It seems such a shame that the viaduct is closed off. That would make a great hiking trail. I started following you at Ladybower, and I've come to the conclusion that you could sell ice to the Eskimos. Brilliant vlog, thanks for sharing.

A most excellent video, Ant. The location very well explained with the maps, and it's hard to believe how busy this area once was with the railway lines in abundance. It's great to see the bridge numbers still there from the 1960s, and the structures in good condition, too. The drone footage over the viaduct is brilliant. The tunnel curved brickwork is amazing in the way that it was constructed with such precision. Many thanks for this production, Ant.
Really interesting video thanks, an area well worth looking at, the mixture of lines and levels shows how important the area was to the railway, one minor point, the first bridge you came to was an underbridge not overbridge, it’s always described from the position in relation to the railway.

Another cracking video thanks ant, the 3f jinty locomotive is now preserved at the midland railway in Butterly, I think it is in line for restoration at some point in time
I was fortunate enough to break down in my truck on the M1 and had a cracking view of Crigglestone tunnel which is just off j38 I was so tempted to hop over the fence and have a look at the tunnel but it seems to be on private land but nethertheless its a stunning tunnel in good condition and I've seen the viaduct from the motorway brilliant video as usual keep up the good work from joff the trucker

@@TrekkingExploration It is on private land, and in the last 4 or 5 years they have infilled the bridge under the motorway making it almost impossible to get to now

Another cracking video. I used to work a little further up at Addingford Mills which bordered the river. I used to walk my guard dogs along the paths and through the tunnels that you have documented. I remember when you could walk over the viaduct. Past the viaduct and towards Crigglestone tunnel gets interesting. A trip down memory lane for me, Thanks for that. Keep up the good work!

I used to pass this often around 30 years ago, and I considered making a model of it in OO gauge, unfortunately when I did manage to get some general dimensions, I soon realised I’d need a long room to accommodate it, something like a 4 or 5 metre length.
Fantastic video, just down road from me in Thornhill, never seen some parts of the viaduct so enjoyed the drone footage, love the channel👍

Now, bridge numbers!
I believe that the numbers you saw ie 1166 are the structure numbers, not dates. All bridges, culverts etc have a number, as you saw on the other bridge, which included the Engineers' Line Reference (BAH1 - Horbury Station Junction to Crigglestone Junction).
Not sure why 1166 was a number, it may be that whoever is responsible for it now has given it an asset number that doesn't match the original railway one, or there were different numbering schemes in operation. But the authorities that have taken on structures (ie was the British Railways Residual Board and now National Highways or the local authority for many of them).

Nice one Ant, you really have to admire the skill of all the trades in the building of viaducts as an retired brickie I can tell you that building arches in engineering brick is time consuming and intricate and very wearing on the scutch hammers, the reason for the brick being curved at the entrance is usually because the sides on the entrance to the tunnel are not aligned being at an angle so they do it that way for strength and to get the arch to be correctly positioned and built, I’m not explaining it very well but I can visualise it which of course is no good to anyone

Looks like the top of the viaducts been cleared since last been up too but track bed more overgrown many a weekend cycling round that area
I hope like conisborough it will one day be opened up for public access as a footpath or cycle path

You didn't go to Crigglestone Tunnel? You can literally see the tunnel portal from the motorway at this time of year. It has always been easily accessible from the nearby roads. Oh, and yes, the little one is definitely a tunnel as well. Horbury Tunnel on the Horbury West Curve I believe. It's only fairly recently they pulled all the rails up on there actually.

It's the National Coal Mining Museum and it's Wakefield, not Huddersfield.
The old victorian engineers did such a fantastic job of linking virtually every local town and village by the building of a rail system to be proud of. Only for mismanagement and seriously insane decisions in the 50's & 60's to almost destroy it. Beeching & Marples should have been given jail terms for what they were allowed to do. The politics then were absolutely disgusting as they are nowadays. Its always to do with money and not common sense why the infrastructure is abandoned.
