    SO INTERESTING. We are so beyond lucky to have John Clifford it isnt even funny. My sister and I were searching madly for his book to buy but I guess as of May 13, 2020 it has not been published yet. We are waiting to strike the moment it is published. EVERYONE, make sure you buy John Clifford's wonderful book when it comes out.

    Wow. I never knew Balanchine would have everyone do a performance of his ballet on stage just for the archives. I wish there were thousands of them.

    I always love seeing Melissa in her prime, by the time she was my teacher at NCSA she was a crazy old thing toting around her rollable oxygyn tank with her scratchy, cackling emphazema destroyed voice and lungs. But she really was lovely here. Nice to see what she was capable of in her prime.

    What a pearl. Thank you. Ms. Hayden’s dancing in a wonderful period of her career. An iconic ballet, so copied in style in the day. But none approaching the masterfully choreographed original.

    Ottima la riconduzione dei passi secondo la traccia melodica.Ben tenuto quello che con un mio neologismo mi piace chiamare convolo della ballerina. Ottimo il concerto del corollario danzante e l'evidenziazione di positure figurali interessanti.Oltremodo bravi rutti gli agenti in proscenio.Bighin GIULIO RENZO

    What a great video - and nice to hear some slightly brisker tempos in the finale. You can see Stravinsky's Neoclassical influence on Balanchine in this ballet - using numerical sequences in a polyrhythmic way.

    John, there's a video (I believe a Canadian version) of Barocco that "only" had six corps girls. I've only ever seen it performed with eight. Do you know why the smaller cast? Space issues?

    • @jcliff26
      @jcliff26  6 років тому

      Yes, that's from the '50's and he only cut the two corps girls because of space. Normally it's always 8.

    Can someone tell me which dancers are Bettijane Sills and Lynne Stetson? I’ve met them. Thanks!

    John, is this a rehearsal? Very cool to see Melissa!! She was my sister's teacher in NYC the summer after my sister left SAB for the National Ballet of Canada!

      Iain Davies-Hayle Not a rehearsal. Just an archival film done in practice clothes with piano.

    It would have been nice if they had just used a tape recorder like my ballet teacher in my childhood did instead of a piano. Our tapes sounded great.

      Union rules forbade it.

    Curious about the white leotards for the soloists but black for the corps. I’ve never seen that before - too bad no strings or violins soloists though - could this have been a rehearsal? love it thanks for posting.

      Just what was decided they’d wear that day. I agree, all white for everyone would have read better.

      This was only done in practice clothes for the archives. These weren’t the performance costumes. For that every girl was in white.

    Would be even better with the strings playing instead of piano

      That was done for archives during an orchestra strike. It’s not performed that way.
