Well, racing is also very serious and deadly. Lives are on the line every time a car launches. I know Roy would have me feeling like a toddler getting yelled at like that. But I understand it. When you do it right, it minimizes risk while still achieving the goal.
Pick any sport, the pros make it look easy as pie, so to speak. But then you try it out yourself and you find out very quickly that it's not nearly as easy as they make it seem.
I love Roy Hill! He’s an absolute pioneer of drag racing. Serious, determined and passionate about the sport. He’s hard on EVERYONE, because he cares so much. Loved this so much. One of the best episodes to date!

Trans brake locks 1st and reverse in together. When the button is released, reverse is no longer locked in. Another fascinating upload by Mike and the crew and enjoyed it as always.
Whole thing was a tad cringe, first super comp dragsters your lookin at 6-800 hp on the top end not 1000hp...I know several people including myself that actuate the trans brake with the thumbnail and slip it off....yanking your hand back does nothing of value and at a 1.18 r/t he could yank his whole body back and still would have slept on the tree...and finally only thing hard about it is nailing the launch and keeping it under control if the tires unload mid track....and I guess running index trying to pull a bumper on the opponent without breaking out
I am always amazed at the reaction times of Pro Dragsters.. 003 seconds is the difference between a win and a loss. Thanks Mike, for showing how it's done!

Just figured out, after a moment or two of considerable deliberation, the bottom line for why I've enjoyed following Mike all these many years; anytime I think of decency, Mike Rowe immediately springs to mind. He is a decent human being no matter the topic at hand and one of the few decent role models for up and coming kids today.
I remember using my transbrake the first time. Matting the gas in gear and it’s standing still will un-nerve you! But that feeling when you let go of that button is amazing! Great job Mike!

Way to go Mike. After more than 750 passes down the track, I thank you for a nice exposure to drag racing. Anyone can race in their street car. Show up, ask questions, and make some passes. You can even win in a 20 second car. Its all driver skill. Its called Bracket Racing. Write the time on your window (shoe polish) and run EXACTLY that time AND cut a perfect light, and you can win against a MUCH faster car. If you dial in a 20.00 second time, and your competitor dials in a 12.00, you get a 8 second head start. Handicap racing. Of course, going faster is more fun, but start somewhere, learn to drive!

Absolutely. It's a FAR better approach than the "everyone gets a trophy" mentality. Not only do you learn the skills at hand, you also learn personal responsibility and accountability. That's seriously lacking these days.

In my sixty three years of life I have had a few men like Roy push me. In the moment I hated them. Most of them are no longer with us but now I would give them a hug if I could. Roy and Mike are extraordinary men.
I saw Roy Hill race at Old Dominion Speedway in Manassas, VA, forty years ago. He was running a Petty Enterprises sponsored ProStock on the 8th mile track, believe he ran a 4.82, and that was really something back in 1980'ish.

I took one of my boys to Roy Hill to get his junior dragster license. My son struggles under pressure but Roy is the dragster whisperer. It was a long day but we all got through it and he got his NHRA license. Roy then took us to his house and showed us all his race cars and told us plenty of stories. He's a true treasure.
Hard lessons learned from the master Roy Hill followed by the best reward at 1000HP for Mike Rowe. Memories made for everyone on the track. This was a great day!
Do it! I took a drag experience class about 12 years ago. It was blast! Similar cars as what Mike drove except it was throttle stopped down to about 300 HP. We also left in high gear off the foot brake only. It still ran around 11.0 at 120. Doing the burnout was the best part!

I will say this is my favorite Mike Rowe episode! That means alot.....during the summer I work at a Boy Scout summer camp and teach Welding, Home repairs, Metal work and plumbing merit badges and lovingly have named my program "Dirty Jobs" It has turned out to be the most popular camp program at out very large camp in Southern California, with hundreds of male and female scouts learning my life's work of the forgotten trades. PLUS ..............I'm a huge drag racing fan and this episode just made me smile the whole time. (sorry not sorry for using the name of your show for my program but kids love it)

I grew up in Fremont, California in the SF Bay Area. We had a Drag Strip and every High School actually fielded a "Drag Racing Team" back in the 1970's good times. I went to Junior College for an AA degree but, my friend from Drag Racing talked me into entering the building trades....Made far better money than I would have otherwise. We need vocational classes back in our schools!
I really loved this episode and my first thought was how come I don't see Mike Rowe on a network such as Discovery. I had a long comment typed out regarding money, sponsors and such. I backspaced retyped so many times I finally thought, screw it. Then I remembered what someone said about racing from the owner's/driver's perspective. It is a matter of cubic dollars and how fast you want to go. The more you spend, the faster you go. That can apply in other things too. Also, not everyone can actually drive any kind of race car with any kind of success regardless of what anyone says.

Just figured out, after a moment or two of considerable deliberation, the bottom line for why I've enjoyed following Mike all these many years; anytime I think of decency, Mike Rowe immediately springs to mind. He is a decent human being no matter the topic at hand and one of the few decent role models for up and coming kids today.

I remember using my transbrake the first time. Matting the gas in gear and it’s standing still will un-nerve you! But that feeling when you let go of that button is amazing! Great job Mike!

Way to go Mike. After more than 750 passes down the track, I thank you for a nice exposure to drag racing. Anyone can race in their street car. Show up, ask questions, and make some passes. You can even win in a 20 second car. Its all driver skill. Its called Bracket Racing. Write the time on your window (shoe polish) and run EXACTLY that time AND cut a perfect light, and you can win against a MUCH faster car. If you dial in a 20.00 second time, and your competitor dials in a 12.00, you get a 8 second head start. Handicap racing. Of course, going faster is more fun, but start somewhere, learn to drive!

Absolutely. It's a FAR better approach than the "everyone gets a trophy" mentality. Not only do you learn the skills at hand, you also learn personal responsibility and accountability. That's seriously lacking these days.

In my sixty three years of life I have had a few men like Roy push me. In the moment I hated them. Most of them are no longer with us but now I would give them a hug if I could. Roy and Mike are extraordinary men.

I saw Roy Hill race at Old Dominion Speedway in Manassas, VA, forty years ago. He was running a Petty Enterprises sponsored ProStock on the 8th mile track, believe he ran a 4.82, and that was really something back in 1980'ish.
Remember that. He got caught running a lot of other stuff to and went to prison for a bit. But he’s always been one hell of a driver. Used to be Ronnie Sox and Roy Hill

Great job Mike. I went through a drag racing school and you portrayed it expertly.
I took one of my boys to Roy Hill to get his junior dragster license. My son struggles under pressure but Roy is the dragster whisperer. It was a long day but we all got through it and he got his NHRA license. Roy then took us to his house and showed us all his race cars and told us plenty of stories. He's a true treasure.

Been on my bucket list to drive a dragster down the strip! I did the NASCAR thing in Richmond which was sweet.
Do it! I took a drag experience class about 12 years ago. It was blast! Similar cars as what Mike drove except it was throttle stopped down to about 300 HP. We also left in high gear off the foot brake only. It still ran around 11.0 at 120. Doing the burnout was the best part!

I will say this is my favorite Mike Rowe episode! That means alot.....during the summer I work at a Boy Scout summer camp and teach Welding, Home repairs, Metal work and plumbing merit badges and lovingly have named my program "Dirty Jobs" It has turned out to be the most popular camp program at out very large camp in Southern California, with hundreds of male and female scouts learning my life's work of the forgotten trades. PLUS ..............I'm a huge drag racing fan and this episode just made me smile the whole time. (sorry not sorry for using the name of your show for my program but kids love it)

I grew up in Fremont, California in the SF Bay Area. We had a Drag Strip and every High School actually fielded a "Drag Racing Team" back in the 1970's good times. I went to Junior College for an AA degree but, my friend from Drag Racing talked me into entering the building trades....Made far better money than I would have otherwise. We need vocational classes back in our schools!

I really loved this episode and my first thought was how come I don't see Mike Rowe on a network such as Discovery. I had a long comment typed out regarding money, sponsors and such. I backspaced retyped so many times I finally thought, screw it. Then I remembered what someone said about racing from the owner's/driver's perspective. It is a matter of cubic dollars and how fast you want to go. The more you spend, the faster you go. That can apply in other things too. Also, not everyone can actually drive any kind of race car with any kind of success regardless of what anyone says.
