My assumption was that the regenerating clothing was there specifically as a signal that there was something not quite right about this regeneration. I could have assumed maybe it was just a stylistic flourish they'd decided to do-but it feels very deliberate in light of the fact that the outfit *didn't* change earlier in the same story when it was the Master. That inconsistency feels like we were meant to notice it.

My initial fear was that it will turn out to be an illusion; that is, she really has regenerated into Ncuti, but he and we are seeing DT because some force wants us to. I was hoping that wasnt the case, as that would be cheating us of Ncuti's debut performance, but I've seen RTD quotes where he's outright calling DT "the fourteenth Doctor" and Ncuti "The Fifteenth Doctor", sooo...I dunno.

I'd sussed that out when the early leaks of Ace and Teagan coming back hit. It’s an extention of the end of Season 3's "Journey's End". Davros accuses the Doctor with the hypocrisy for making his companions into weapons. This gives us the flip side...some of his Companions may have a love hate relationship, but they are still devoted to him.
I adored the bit with 7 and Ace. Seven was "my" Doctor, and he's splendid to see him still unbroken.

Power of the Daleks is Troughton's first story, and I think it's really well written, and well worth anyone watching, even though it's one of the missing stories, and the DVD is a cartoon reconstruction (which some people don't like). The extras on that DVD talk about how the BBC handled the first regeneration. Basically, they publicised the story by talking about the Daleks, and just not mentioning that they had recast the lead role, plus Power of the Daleks was actually the 3rd story in the 4th season, although in those early days the show had around 40-odd episodes per season, so was only off the air for 5 or 6 weeks each year, so the "season breaks" were less noticeable in the early years.

The part that hit me hardest was definitely the little group at the end. While the Doctor takes her last quiet moments to herself, we see something that made me happier than almost any other meeting of companions than ever before; just them coming together and bonding over their shared experience, and being able to laugh and mourne in such a unique way but in a way that's so normal and human, not to mention I smiled when I saw Jo, joyfully chuckled when I saw Mel, and genuinely gasped when I saw Ian. These people, the friends and loved ones left behind, they are the power of the Doctor (which I'm also glad they opted not to literally spell out in the dialogue). And that was the perfect note to end on before having our last moment with 13, with a stunning view, beautiful use of her theme and the most wonderfully playful last line.
Chibnal's era has been a mess, but this special reminded me that he is capable of writing good Doctor Who. And it also left me very much sad to see Jodie Whiattaker leave the part and desperately wishing she'd had a better run of series

I'm so happy that you liked this story so much! I know you've wanted to like Whittaker's run for so long. I just saw the special via Amazon Prime, and it was, for me, perfect and brilliant. So many in-jokes and references that didn't detract from the plot, but that made me smile. The Master's brief interactions with Tegan and Ace were brilliant! The Master in general was brilliant, as was the Doctor. And I also cried with Sylvester and Sophie. McCoy is *my* Doctor, and he and Ace are *my* team TARDIS, and so finding out finally how Ace left, and having her get to apologize and him get to apologize, it was so wonderful! I cried at the end as well, when I realized what Graham and Dan were doing, and saw just who was sitting there. I cried seeing Ian there, and hearing him speak. Getting William Russell back for that little cameo was so lovely! And Jo! And Mel! The only thing I think that would have made me cry more would have been for one of the Bannerman Road crew to be there, too. I know this won't be for everyone, but it was for you, and for me, and a lot of the fans of older Who as well as Whittaker's run, and it was FUN. We differ on opinions of the 13th Doctor's era, but I will agree that if more episodes had been structured as carefully as this one, it would have been a stronger era (I loved it and think it's good overall, so for me that would just be turning good into great). And Kate! And the parachuting into the TARDIS! There were so many moments that made me squee while watching.
I'm not too thrilled about the regeneration into Tennant, either, but what's making it work for me is the fact that the Doctor thinks something's wrong. They realize this isn't supposed to happen. So I'm assuming the 60th will focus on that, and then we'll get a proper 14th with Gatwa. But no downers! Not for me, not right now. I am happily celebrating that every companion in the Chibnall era left on their own terms (more or less), and accepted that it was time to move on. Companions chose to move on rather than having to be forced out. And the Doctor's final words were brilliant, and completely fitting for Whittaker. Such a beautiful end to a wonderful episode and wonderful run.

@@Here_is_Waldo Tegan asked the Doctor what she would be thinking about. He said Adric. Adric was a youth who started traveling with the Fourth Doctor and Romana. And Adric died, trying to figure out a mathematical lock on a bomb on a spaceship, but the ship was actually traveling in time and was part of the event that killed the dinosaurs on Earth. That incident also involved the Cybermen. Does this make it clearer why Tegan would remember him? She originally wandered onto the TARDIS thinking it was a police box, only to eventually find the Doctor and Adric, and they traveled together (along with Nyssa of Traken) for some time. As if to add salt to Adric's death, he had been arguing with the Doctor and said he wanted to leave the TARDIS. It wasn't the last thing he said to the Doctor, but it was pretty darn close.

I'm glad you enjoyed it! Seriously.
Hate to be *that guy*, because I didn't... Sadly. Tried to go in with an open mind, I swear. Like, I wasn't focussed on the hang-ups of wrapping stuff up. In fact... I think the reason why a lot of this didn't work for me, was because of that, almost? Like I didn't really care for the lack of closure, because half the stuff I didn't *care* about in the first place - and by that same token, I didn't... Really care about any of the appearances in this episode itself.
The classic era stuff I'm unfamiliar with; the Chibnall era stuff I've always wanted to like, but pretty much all of the characters have been so flat that I can't care either. Thus, it was kind of just watching people run around in chaos...? I think if I did care about one or the other, maybe this would have made it enjoyable to me but... Ultimately, it doesn't work when half the people you're unfamiliar with, and the other half are kinda just cardboard cutouts to you (sorry, that's a bit harsh, but yeah) because what you're kind of left with is a really messy story. Like a really messy one... Lots of just random ideas that surface but aren't really explored within the episode to any satisfactiory conclusion, that keep intercutting each other. And a lot of those ideas WERE interesting (the Master forcing her regen? cool!) but not explored properly: just raised, then dropped, or sustained but not developed, which just felt frustrating to me.
I liked Sacha's performance, though. I wish there could have been more focus on him, personally. Also liked Yaz's goodbye, actually. She really grew on me, and I feel like that's partially just the *idea* of her rather than the actual character but yeah.
(... ALSO, mentally? I know I'm trying not to touch the Tennant thing. It pisses me off that he's "14", regardless of how they play it, but I'm gonna try to keep an open mind because I do want to put my faith into whatever RTD's vision is - maybe it'll be worth it, in the end. Do hope so! Ncuti looks bloody great in the teaser.)

I feel like part of the reason he never ended up doing anything with The Timeless Child arc was literally because of the intense and immediate backlash from a huge swath of the people who watch Doctor Who. Most people, even diehard fans, really REALLY hated it as a plot element and part of the Doctor's backstory. It ruins the mystery of the Doctor and turns them into a completely different character and it also exists as a bastardization hybrid of the Brain of Morbius plot hook and the Cartmel Masterplan from Classic.
I mean, we could also theorize that he was told to shelve the idea from the higher ups at the BBC following the episode's release and reception - but we'll likely never know if that was the case.

A retcon that I’d really like to see in the future is the idea that The Master is the Timeless Child. I feel like it would really complicate their relationship in an interesting way. But yeah, TTC is worse than a bad idea, it *actively damages* the DW property, which is why I disagree when some say it should just be ignored. This is FAR greater than the Doc being half-human, this NEEDS to be actively retconned away, in order for the show to work as it once did...unfortunately, I think RTD will probably feel the need to not step on another showrunners' toes, and will, at best, just ignore it.

The actual episode was fantastic imo, yes the plot was chaos and didn’t always make sense but I’d rather Doctor who was entertaining above all else than laser focused on making perfect sense. And Dhawan really has become one of my favourite masters and I hope RTD brings him back somehow. The concept of the Master forcing the doctor to regenerate into him is an idea with a lot of promise and probably deserved a more focused storyline than a finale that’s doing so much else too. It’s probably Chibnall’s best idea he’s had so at least he saved that for last.
This obviously wasn’t a perfect episode and the recasting of Tennant/Gatwa being in the next time trailer as his first glimpse does tick me off. Gatwa should’ve gotten his regeneration scene as his introduction imo and I do not like that Tennant is not only coming back but is also taking what should’ve been Gatwa’s moment. But I enjoyed it quite a lot overall.

The latest theory I've heard is that the 60th Anniversary Special will involve the Psychic Circus from The Greatest Show in the Galaxy. Basically the Doctor regenerating back into 10 will be the result of powerful God-like beings who destroy anyone who fails to entertain them. If this is the case then it's very meta.

I really enjoyed this. I didnt really care that the Timeless Child stuff wasn't dealt with - as you said, it would have muddied the already packed plotlines. Everything was dealt with nicely, and Jodie's doctor bowed out in a great way. I would hope that we get some kind of explanation as to why we had the David Tennant regeneration (maybe something to do with the fob watch hidden in the Tardis?) - but not overly worried if it doesn't. Nice little surprises all the way through - LOVED Tegan and Ace, and also liked that the companions weren't killed off, possibly leaving the door open (Hello RTD!!) to bring them back at some point. Sasha's Master was insidious and crazy - and I loved that!! Also kinda unhinged (more than before we could say) Is this the last we see of the Master?? What say you? All in all - an enjoyable finale. Well worth the extra 24 hour wait in Australia.

The S12 finale/Timeless Child reveal is essentially Act 1 of _Flux_. It's there to set up Tecteun, the Division, etc. and Flux explores those, so it doesn't really make sense to say it went nowhere. Chibnall probably _was_ going to do more with it if he had another season, but even without that _Flux_ brings the reveal to a reasonable conclusion: The Doctor had discovered her secret history with Tecteun and the Division, and has now confronted them about it, resolved that, and come to terms with that chapter of her past.

17:58 honestly... I don't wanna be so arrogant that I make this call now, but I honestly do think 13 is gonna end up being one of those Doctors like 6 and 7 who's runs are retroactively fixed by Big Finish. I think 13's biggest issue was the huge aesthetic/tonal course-correction after her first season (which I still think is her best) to appease people so enraged about a lack of a "big season-arc," and I honestly wish we'd gotten that _mysterious wandering_ tone throughout her whole run intstead of the big switch to season arcs.
I think a big finish run full of one-off stories, more in the vein of her first season (set between "Flux" and her finale) would be great, because it would better act on the amazing potential we got in her first season (and especially first episode) and also allow an opportunity to explore Checkov's guns that never got explored in the show (her teased romance with Yaz and a more meaningfully concluded character-arc/built-up exit for Dan being the chief ones).
I honestly think it just feels so natural, like, 6's Big Finish run was great in that it resolved the hanging Checkov's gun of both the Valeyard and his eventually intended shift toward being less abrasive, taking something that didn't work _because it was never completed_ and completing it. Ditto for 7, via adapting his abandoned Season 27 story "Thin Ice" which reveals his intention for (SPOILERS) -Ace to become a Time Lord- (END OF SPOILERS), thus making all the set-up tension in his relationship with Ace actually culminate in something. I personally think 5's TV run is good enough by itself without the Big Finish audios, as long as you start with "Earthshock" and just skip the bad episodes (bar "Terminus" and "King's Demons"), but even if you DO find his run unsatisfying he has more build-up to things like Ace and Nyssa leaving.
13 just feels like a Doctor who needs that retroactive resolution, to act on Checkov's guns that weren't resolved or completed during her run in the show. Obviously I don't expect them to do the Timeless Child, but her relationship to Tecteun as mother figure? Her history with the Division, who's presumably still TOed with her? Her romance with Yaz? Presumably the Flux and Timeless Child seem like they're going to get more explored or resolved in RTD era 2, but for everything else PLEASE give us a retroactive "Series 13b" that explores them!!

I'm not gonna act like the Capaldi era ended on solid ground ratings wise, ratings were down, but compared to the decline in viewership seen during the Chibnall era its astounding (I'm not gonna blame Jodie for it fully because the writing did her no favours).

The clothes regenerating isn't exactly something new. It did happen once before in Doctor Who. It happened during the 1st-2nd Dr's regeneration back in 1966 and hadn't happened again since until the 13-14/10.3(?) Regeneration... Maybe the 1st and 13th Doctor both had a cloaking device on them... lol ;) (I'm hoping the Valeyard will turn up soon, especially if he returns for the 60th, though I'm uncertain that'll happen, people tend to dismiss the Valyard as a 'boring' villain and shouldn't 'ever' return but they often don't see past his 'Trial of a Timelord' appearance and assume he'll be the same as he was back then... that's kind of like saying the original Master was boring, so he can't return after the 3rd Dr's run (not that he ever was boring, mind, I'm just using him as a loose example, considering how differently the other actors since had played that character through the years, if that makes any sense..?)

The Doctor surviving War Games, Planet of Spiders, Logopolis, Caves of Androzani, Parting of the Ways, End of Time, Time of the Doctor, and The Doctor Falls would feel anticlimactic. However, the Whittaker Doctor could’ve flown off for more adventures after this episode with only minor changes to the script.

Sacha definitely stole the show here and I think I can definitely consider him my favourite modern Master; his dancing to Boney M firmly cemented that. WITH THAT SAID, the managed to find my one loophole with Ace & Teagan - Character stuff. They had "their" doctors talk to them and give them closure they never really had before, and goddamn if that didn't get to me (and to stress, I have NEVER SEEN classic who, and those reunions still touched me). Because it wasn't just fanservice, it had a point and it *mattered* to the characters.

THEORY TIME - The fugitive doctor was *always* the AI, sent from the future by the doctor. Why did she have a Tardis? It was the masters. Where does she come in the chronology? She doesn't. Why did she only just show up during 13s run? So the 13th doctor would have enough memory of her to project her into the AI. Why doesn't the doctor have any memories of being her, or travelling with Karvanista? Because she didn't. Why is she so ready and willing to use violence? Because she's not *really* the doctor, in the traditional sense. Yes, this would bring up some issues regarding the first black doctor not actually being the doctor at all, but I doubt Chibnall would've factored that in.

Best of the Chibnall era...period! I think that COVID really screwed Chibs because he was unable to do what he probably wanted to do. We have seen things improve as we've come out of COVID. He took a different tact in his first series with all stories being unconnected (except for the first and last episodes of the series) and not using any classic villains. I found that "refreshing", but it was hit and miss up until "The Flux". The last few specials have redeemed his run a bit but too many loose ends because of COVID. Let's see if RTD uses the 14th Doctor to clean up all of the unresolved issues. This episode itself is a new classic to me, especially since i've been a regular viewer since 77.

I feel so bad for Chibnall. Social media won and we all lost. No references to The Timeless Child or any of the new mythos, this was a rebranding exercise, even with the hints of the ether and the pieces (I don't think it was going to be as simple as The Timeless Child was Vinder and Bel's child, the Quaranx) and this does not bode well for the next era, even with RTD's populist touch.
Chibnall tried to warn us in Doctor Who Magazine #568.
I have never been more worried about the future of the show. Who is a brand now, God help us all.

"Reminds me of RTD's finales" is an understatement - it felt a lot like it was trying to be a new version of the Series 4 finale (particularly cramming in the Doctor's extended "fam") with hints of the final RTD special (13 makes some comments that sound too much like 10's final feelings, the regen chambers are reminiscent of that episode, The Master trying to impose their being on someone else*) and the Series 3 finale (dancing to Rasputin especially). That's not innately bad, but some things landed badly because they felt like on-the-nose attempts to do something that was done better previously. I think one thing it lacks is the key part of RTD's finales: they were natural culminations of what had been built up (maybe the End of Time less so) over that previous season, so it made sense for those characters to appear and for the plot to go where it did. This finale wanted to do that without really laying the groundwork that RTD was so good at (honestly, Moffatt was better at laying groundwork, he just underdelivered the payoff).
While I can understand that attempts to wrap up all of Chibnall's plot threads in a (less than) 90 minute finale might've been difficult, I did find it weird that he instead decided to base this finale on a bunch of things implied to have been resolved (the Master & his Cyberlords, the useless Ashad) and a bunch of new things, rather than just taking it to its natural conclusion out of Flux & wrap up The Timeless Child. Honestly, I thought the kid the Cyberlords kidnapped at the start was going to be revealed to be young Timeless Child before arriving in Gallifrey, and that would be the focus of the episode rather than whatever we got.
Stuffing it full of cameos and such certainly made it weird and difficult to do that, though I do appreciate how the past Doctors were implemented. I don't think it worked as well for me as others (as I have no real love/link to the original Doctors), but it was nice to see. I'm kinda sad that we got the rumoured twist at the very end (after a lackluster goodbye/final speech from 13, which I disliked though I did appreciate some of what was said, particularly "tag, you're it"), but I'm curious what they'll do with it. Technically, does this mean Tennant's played 3 or 4 Doctors (1st 10, 10 regenerating into 10, Metacrisis, and now 14)?
I agree that Dan's departure felt like a weird moment, especially once it became clear he really was gone for most of the episode, not just going somewhere that'd set him up to be in "the right/wrong place at the right/wrong time". Again, the heavily stuffed plot didn't really leave a spot for him, unless he was going to otherwise fill the Graham role (which would've made sense, really).
*I'm not sure the Master's plan makes sense to me - I can accept the forced regeneration being guided to take the form of someone, but it doesn't quite work for me that it plays out more as a body possession situation (especially as The Master's body is just slumped over like he's departed until the degeneration). I was expecting it'd either be a "Face/Off"-style situation where The Master takes The Doctor's face and puts his on hers to finish out his plan where he frames her while she also faces the consequences of his actions or I thought it'd backfire on him, as he realizes that he'd be able to guide the transformation but he'd still be in his body, so it'd create 2 Masters who immediately try to betray/destroy the other.
Overall, I didn't hate it, I didn't love it, there were a lot of issues with this finale but some nice ideas and moments, including that support group. It can't escape the past few Chibnall years, though, and that really sours it, too, and I doubt I'll revisit this or any other parts of that era.

A mash-up that felt like three episodes crammed into 90 mins, but for me one of the better episodes Jodie was given. I do think Chibs didn't try to fix the mess his production team made story-wise because he couldn't come up with a coherent way to do it and was perhaps apologising to the fans (and perhaps Jodie because her Doctor was really let down by Chibs writing team) by giving us a fan-pleasing 'regen' episode with the returning companions and classic Doctor's (pity they did not get Reece Shearsmith to play the second doctor) anyway I scored it as a 7/10 episode.

Okay, gotta be honest: I thought this was a complete mess. Dangling nostalgia keys in front of viewers while rushing a completely overfraught story doesnot make a good episode for me. It doesn't help that I really don't like the current Master for being far too over the top (I'm the opposite to you on that, I think Simm worked much better as a cohesive character than Dhawan). It does get better after the forced regeneration, because for the first time since his introduction, the current Master feels like he has a purpose instead of just being there. And then the actual regeneration became an afterthought. I do like Tennant going "I know these teeth" and that is about all the nice things I have to say about this.
Yeah, waving around fanservice just doesn't work for me, even though I was happy to spot Jo Grant a few times (whom I remember from her appearance in Sarah Jane Adventures) and see Graham (the better Dan, whom I find annoying). The other old companions I don't recognize, anyway.

I liked this episode. I do kinda feel bad for Jodie... she is a good actress and I honestly think she could have been an incredible Doctor. But she never quite got a definition AS the Doctor. I was really hoping for a Capaldi level regen speech that'd really sum up who she was but we didn't get that. On the other hand... this episode was actually darn good. Maybe not the greatest ever but good enough. If this version of Chibnall had shown up to write things in season 1 we'd be getting ready to see him handle the next Doctor. But bottom line I liked the episode quite a bit.
Chibnalls era on the show will be remembered as 3 seasons of wild experimentation. Which is a good thing - if you can take a 60 year old show and still experiment with it that is good. I don't think Chibnall was quite up to the task of it but he tried at least. Plus he did keep the show going through Covid which must have been a logistical nightmare behind the scenes.
In a way I'll miss Chibnall. I honestly see promise in some of his stuff. And I will miss Jodie - she is a great actor and she could have been so good. But that ending is surprising enough and a big enough cliffhanger that it really hypes me for next season.

9: "You were fantastic. And you know what? So was I."
    10: "I don't want to go."
11: "I'll always remember when the Doctor was me."
