  • I dedicate this video to Amy Shira Teitel for her impressive work and awesome channel about the aerospace and American spacial program. I strongly advise you to go see her videos on her channel "Vintage Space" which are superbly explained and well realized. Thanks you Amy ;)
    It's been a while since I made a video on the Apollo / KSP subject, but I wanted to redo it, in a more complex and closer to reality way but also in a more cinematic and pleasant to watch video.
    By making this video I realized how difficult it is to represent each detail of the mission, while keeping the thing easy to watch and not too long.
    It took me about 3 days to do the video with a huge editing work, lots a scenes to shoot in game multiple times, the scenes to redo etc. ...
    There are a lot of details that are not perfect in this video, that's why I would like you to play a little game!
    Tell me in the comment section if you find errors or differences between my video and the real mission. I know there is a lot of space nerds here, We will see if you are good ;)
    By the way I want to point out that even if the Apollo 13 soundtrack is well known and used everywhere, is still damn cool. right?
    Also, all the radio conversations and audio events are not on the right time scale, for cinematographic purposes.
    MOD LIST:

    I like how you made the orbit to the moon a free return trajectory, and the way you made the Apollo 11 LM hover above the ground for a bit before landing because Neil was still searching for a relatively safe landing zone, small details like these makes the video authentic and enjoyable.

    After the final booster seperation, they were just sitting inside a metal can waiting to hit the atmosphere, with no way of exiting if anything went wrong. If the pod went out of control, or the heat shield were too thin, the entire thing would have burned to slag in the atmosphere.

    It's been 45 years since apollo launched.. yet look how far we have come.. after 45 years it not a single human has left low earth orbit. It took 45 years just for the planning and testing for NASA to build the SLS for Orion.. They deserve the budget they had.

    • @sazanavi
      @sazanavi 6 років тому

      They did not deserve the budget when they choose the using space shuttles. Absurdly expensive yet dangerous. But in 1969 nasa had almost same budget with whole space shuttle program so nasa does not care i guess.

    • @hydrochloricacid2146
      @hydrochloricacid2146 4 роки тому

      @@sazanavi You should look at the initial proposal for the STS program, it was actually quite ambitious and could have accomplished a lot. The reason we got the Shuttle and all its flaws was because Congress gutted NASA post-Apollo, forcing them to integrate what started out as a whole system of spacecraft into a single spaceplane.

      Antonin Mathieu, also Mission Control instructed Armstrong and Aldrin to keep everything on, so that TELMU and CONTROL could see how long the LM's systems could last without cooling water; something that came in handy when Apollo 13's LOX tank blew up 9 months later and the crew had to use their LM as a lifeboat with the onboard resources available.

    At 8:22 they test our understanding of the relationship between Earth and the moon. When on the side of the moon facing Earth, you can't really achieve a Earth horizon photo. To see Earth you look straight up every time. Earth is 90° from the front side of the moon we see all the time.

      First of all: there is no "they" or "nasa" here, I am the author of this video, i'm just a casual gamer and I did this on KSP (space flight simulator). I can tell you that, in fact, you absolutly can have the earth over the horizon, depending on the orientation of the sun; REMEMBER, there is 3 parameters! (earth, moon and sun alignement) not just 2. Just because we only see one side of the moon, doesn't mean that the sun allway illumnate that one side. knowing this, I can perfectly land in the light and see earth just over the horizon, in fact i can even land (still in the light) and not even see the earth. Tell me if you still have doubts :)

    Nicely done! What mods did you use for the camera-work?
    The only discrepancy between what I see here and what happened during the mission is that here, the adapter panels on the S-IVB stage remain connected to it after opening. That is incorrect; that is how they were designed originally (and functioned on previous Apollo missions), but it is not how they were designed to function on Apollo 11. Rather, they were designed to be completely blown off by explosive bolts. This was done for two main reasons: first, there was some concern that if the panels remained attached, the force generated by docking the Apollo Command Module with the Lunar Module might cause the panels to swing forward, which could damage the Apollo Spacecraft. Second, problems with the panels had been experienced on a previous Apollo mission, Apollo 7, in which one of the panels did not completely deploy to its 45 degrees open position. Fortunately, Apollo 7 was not carrying a Lunar Module, and so this malfunction did not impede the mission. However, had Apollo 7 been a lunar mission, with a Lunar Module, it could have been very problematic. As a result, a decision was made by NASA engineers to install a system to completely separate the panels via explosive bolts on all missions following Apollo 7.
