  • Review of IUD Kyleena insertion and tips for the procedure. As a soon-to-be health care professional, I couldn’t find any positive reviews on this (newer to the market) IUD’s insertion so I wanted to share my experience. I’ll be sure to update in about a month anything remarkable!

Hi everyone! I got my first IUD when I was 16 and today I got it replaced for the kyleena after having the old one for 5 years so I wanted to share a couple of tips with you that really helped me
    1. Try to do everything your ob-gyn or nurse tells you to do, they know what they're doing
    2. Try to have a full bladder when you have your appointment, I'm not saying that you have to drink water to the point of peeing yourself but drink about 2-4 glasses of water about an hour before your appointment
    3. Take some pain killers before the procedure so that the pain is not as bad and some after if the pain is too bad (NEVER MORE THAN THE RECOMMENDED DOSE)
    4. BREATHE, RELAX AND CLOSE YOUR EYES. Trust me, it's worth it. The more you relax the less pain you will feel and normally the doctor putting the implant will let you know when you will feel a little bit of cramping so try to take deep breaths and keep your eyes closed (you don't need to see what's going on and seeing what they are working with might freak you out), I know it's uncomfortable but it is totally worth it on the long run.
    5. I haven't really seen any comments on how the extraction of an IUD works out, and for me it was really fast. My doctor just pulled on the cord and it was out. Honestly, I felt more discomfort in the couple of second that I didn't have any device inside me than after the new one was implanted. (I say this because I read somewhere that IUD's can inflame the uterus and got really scared that the insertion of the Kyleena IUD would be much worse that my first one, which it wasn't)
    6. Give yourself a pep talk before, tell yourself you’re a strong badass woman that is taking care of herself. The mind can do wonderful things
    7. I'm not gonna lie, my first IUD experience was really painfull and I had very bad cramps, and it took about 10 minutes of multiple doctors trying to put the implant on for it to work. My new ob-gyn told me it was because my uterus was a little tilted and my first ob-gyn should've bent the inserting device a tiny bit so that it would go in, so don't be afraid to tell your doctor to bend the the inserting device on the tip if you have the same problem. (having a full bladder also helps with that)
    8. You might bleed a little or a lot for the first couple of days and my ob-gyn recommended I took some vitamin c to help with that
    9. My boyfriend complained a little at first that he could feel the cord when we were having sex. I talked to my ob-gyn about it and she just cut the string a little bit so that it wasn't as long and the problem was fixed, so try doing that if you are poking your sexual partner after 3-5 times of having sex
    10. Finally, know that you are doing this because of you and if anything were to go wrong you can just take it out and try other methods to prevent unwanted pregnancies
    Hope this helps!!!

I got it and it was wayyyy better than I thought it would be because of all those scary horror stories like you said. I have a very low pain tolerance and usually get anxiety over medical stuff like this. I had taken advil and CBD beforehand and I think the CBD made a big impact. It literally just felt like a had period cramps for like 10 seconds and then it was fine. The whole thing lasted about 5 minutes and when it was done I literally said “wait is that it??” I’ve now had it for a little over 3 months and the first couple of periods were worse than normal but now I only have light bleeding.
I just wanted to share my positive experience because I feel like everyone online has only shared their negative experiences!

Thank you so much for this!! I got Kyleena inserted this morning and I watched several videos about it this night before, including this one. There is very little out there about it and it all sounds very scary. I agree with you 100% and had almost the exact same experience and situation as you. Idk about you, but my doctor called in a prescription for me take take one pill the night before and one the morning of (I think it softened my cervix?) and she also had me take 800mg of ibuprofen an hour before my appointment. Idk if that stuff actually helped, but my insertion process went fine. I did not pass out, vomit, or feel any nausea, unlike the other reviewers. I didn’t even lay down afterward and wait to leave, and I felt no cramping for the first hour or two. I would say the most painful part lasted only about 15 seconds, and like you said it was pretty sharp and stabbing like an insanely strong cramp. I believe it was the speculum thingy opening up my cervix, not the actual IUD being inserted. But if you can survive that short pain (breathe, breathe, breathe ladies!) you will have 5 years of no pregnancy, and lighter or no periods! Remember that before you let a short, one-time painful experience scare you away from an IUD! I will say, most of the rest of the day involved a lot of painful cramping. My doctor said to take ibuprofen for pain, but I didn’t find that very helpful, so my advice is: Midol and/or Advil, a heating pad, and lots of laying down. I don’t normally get much cramping with periods, but I’d say that strong period cramps are what it feels like - I got very severe cramps when I first got my period at 12 y/o that would make me double over on the floor and cry, and this is probably not quite that bad. From what I’ve read, I should be a lot less cramps tomorrow and able to go about my normal activities. As far as bleeding: I am on my period so I already was bleeding, but it is a bit heavier now with the IUD. Despite some discomfort at first, I highly recommend the Kyleena or really any IUD! To me it is a god-send - you can’t beat 99%+ effectiveness, easier periods, little to no side effects, and 5 years of worry-free coverage!

    • @aelw918
      @aelw918 6 років тому +6

Also, some things I didn’t know beforehand but may be helpful... my doctor said no tampons for the first 6 weeks as this may cause the IUD to come out, so any periods or spotting will be maxi pad-only at first. She also said that condoms must be used for the first 21 days to ensure no pregnancy occurs (although I plan to use them anyway, even with the IUD). I also do not see myself working out for at least the first week, but that is up to you and your comfort level. Hope this helps someone!

It's great that your doctor gave you pills to soften your cervix and 800mg of ibu. :)
My doctor did not, so I arrived having taken only 200mg of ibu, not on my period (I read this can help as your cervix is a little more dilated), no cervix softener, no local anaesthetic.
In hindsight, I would highly recommend asking for whatever prep measures possible, as for me it was extremely painful both during the insertion and the hours after.
You might be one of the people who barely feel it or you might be in the worst pain you've ever felt, so why not be prepared.
Also, I would recommend having strong painkillers at home, just in case.
I did not and I was surprised by very strong cramps the whole rest of the day. I couldn't walk or talk and to be honest with you, I cried. They were worse than any period cramp I had experienced. Ibuprofen and naproxen had no effect.
I share my experience, not to scare anyone, but simply to recommend prep to make your own experience as comfortable as possible.
The other thing I want to mention is: side effects include being light headed and nauseous right after.
The insertion was the most painful thing I've ever felt: a few seconds during the measuring of the uterus and then when the IUD was put in. I thought: okay that was really bad but now at least it's over. I immediately came off the table, sat down and we had to go through some forms.
Maybe 5 minutes later I suddenly felt increasingly nauseas. I didn't know nausia could be a side effect so I felt weird about telling the nurse, until I suddenly had to get up and vomited in her sink (really sorry!). I read that other people were made to stay on the table for up to 20 minutes, perhaps that would have helped against the nausea and vomiting so you might want to consider it.
Finally: just to be sure, I recommend having someone pick you up. I, again, thought I would be fine so I walked home but I was nauseous, light headed and crampy so that was not a fun experience.
I'm only sharing this because in hindsight I wished I'd had a bit more knowledge and been more prepared for the side effects.

I got my kyleena in last week and I’m honestly confused by all the negative reviews. It was the easiest process ever, and the only thing that was uncomfortable was the clamp they put on your cervix to keep it straight. And it felt like a cramp/hard fart to be honest.

  • @nicolemorris1022

Well, I wish I would have watched this before hand. I wasn’t instructed to take any pills beforehand, so after insertion, I had cramping pains for about 4 hours, but after resting and using a heating pad, the pain subsided.

Last night I couldn’t sleep at all because I was really anxious about the pain and I’m going on a trip for 2 weeks the day after insertion. I just had mine inserted today and the pain really wasn’t that bad at all!! However, my doctor said the pain depends on how severe your cramps are when you get your period so its different for everyone. I barely get cramps on mine, so on a scale of 1-10, I’d rate the pain like a 4. I also took 800 mg of Ibuprofen an hour before the insertion so I guess that helped as well. The whole procedure only lasted like 5 minutes, so it really wasn’t that bad. Good luck to anyone getting it!

I was due my first period on 20 Feb with all my usual symptoms and got two days of spotting but the rest of the week i still felt bloated and ‘blurgh’. On 28/2-1/3 i got light bleeding, from 2/3 till now (5/3) im on medium flow. I did go gym today which i think has made the flow heavier.

i can't offer official guidance, because that's definitely a decision for you and your doc, but Kyleena is hormonal whereas the copper one doesn't have hormonal contraception in it, the copper does that itself. There are differences in which one lasts longer, size, and periods/hormonal changes to talk with your doc about!

Alexsandra Nilges I didn’t go. I chickened out after watching a video of a live insertion on a plastic dummy. I know, I know. Horrible idea but I can not tolerate pain at all. Maybe in the future I will reschedule but as for now I am going to continue on my birth control pills. I am 20, never know what God has planned for my life within the next 5 years. Thank you so much for this video! It has helped me and a lot of other girls get through this journey! 💖

Hey girls, I’ve been on the kyleena for a little over 6 months. Just going to tell you my experience. I got it back in November. I switched from the pill because I wanted something more permanent. Well the insertion process for me wasn’t the best ( keep in mid I’m 5,1 and 110 pounds. So I’m pretty tiny) they actually had to switch from Mirina I think that’s what it’s called to kyleena because it’s smaller. Some people don’t get Liam at all, but I had pretty extreme pain for a couple of seconds but I think it was because I was so tense and nervous. After that I had the worst cramps I had ever experienced for 2 days. And for the first month you can kind of feel it, it’s hard to explain but you know it’s definitely there. Now I’m going to explain my experience with my iud and my sex life, for y’all who are sexually active. So the biggest thing I noticed was I could feel it in certain positions, so my sex life changed a bit. And it would actually be a little painful if he went too far. Sorry for the tmi. But another big thing is he could feel the strings and they would poke him. So that was a huge downside. This went away after I’d say 3 months tho. But after a while of having it my periods got very irregular and I have random intense cramping. And my cramps got a lot worse with it. But it did make my periods extremely light to non existent. I’ve also had weird symptom where during sex I had extreme pain, and I think it could of been related to the iud. I think it might of been muscle spasms. It was pretty weird. But symptoms I havnt gotten that other people have, are weight gain, acne, heavy bleeding, mood swings. The only really negative thing I’ve had with it is my change in my sex life. It’s just not for me anymore and I’m getting it taken out. Hope this helped in some way!

V late reply so you may already have your answer. but it's usually cut so short, it wouldn't even meet with your tampon string. It's literally like half an inch below your cervix so you have to really look for it when you're checking the strings, let alone when you're not thinking about them. They're also so thin, you'll both be completely unaware of them

that may have been specific to you, but it's not common with Kyleena, I'd talk to your doctor about that!
The most common are as follows:
      >10%:
Central nervous system: Headache (≤16%), migraine (≤16%)
Dermatologic: Acne vulgaris (6% to 15%), seborrhea (1% to 15%)
Endocrine & metabolic: Heavy menstrual bleeding (5% to 59%; generally bleeding lessens after the first 90 days), amenorrhea (≤42%, increases with duration of treatment), intermenstrual bleeding (23%), ovarian cyst (5% to 22%; includes symptomatic and asymptomatic cysts)
      Gastrointestinal: Abdominal pain (≤23%)
Genitourinary: Abnormal uterine bleeding (52%), irregular menses (25% to 43%; menses becomes more regular after the first 90 days), vulvovaginitis (11% to 24%), pelvic pain (≤23%), vaginal infection (9% to 19%), vulvovaginal infection (8% to 19%), vaginal discharge (4% to 15%)

I just got it inserted today...it was a bit painful (the cramps) but “doable”. However, I fainted afterwards. Did this happen to anyone else? The OBGYN said there is a nerve that can make this happen to some women. I got really nauseous and went out. After about 15 minutes I was alert & awake...I’m just curious if this has happened to anyone else. Also did the Kyleena make your periods stop?

Alex can you let me know if this made your periods lighter? I have really heavy periods but I don’t want mirena because it has a higher dosage of hormones. I’m 29 years old and I’ve never been on birth control but I’m honestly so sick of these heavy periods.

    • @alexsandranilges9718
      @alexsandranilges9718  6 років тому +1

I can't personally respond to that because I never got periods/if I did they were really light. I used to take my birth control straight through/didn't take the placebo week. The information I was given did say over time your periods become lighter or disappear all together!

Hey girl don’t be scared, at all!. I got mine back in October. I have anxiety so everything really freaks me out. It’s better not to freak out before you get it. Don’t watch videos on it and don’t read reviews. It’s best to go in not knowing what to expect, TRUST ME. It’s different for everyone. For me it was like getting a shot, it’s a quick pinch. And you get cramping, but like normal period cramping. It literally took them 3 minutes to do the whole process. Trust me it’s not bad at all, you got this!!!

Everything went perfectly fine, didn't even hurt enough to cry! And if anything, I've noticed less headaches. Nothing else of note! woo!!! Good luck!
