  • Some York Tombstone units located at an Apartment Complex in Tulsa, OK. This complex in total has well over a hundred of these. Here’s what I could get on video.

    So many of those still being in service really goes to show the build quality, even though there's a lot of legitimate complaints about the design. Absolutely incredible sighting!

    Finding one tombstone is already unusual, but a whole apartment complex full of them is definitely rare as hell. Great find! I’ve encountered one running before. I thought it was a mini split when I first saw one. I have seen a few of these before. These were made back when Borg-Warner automotive Corp. owned York.

      Very true, this place had probably a hundred more that I didn't get on video. Saw them from the street and knew I had to get a video of them

    You really have to go back to this place during this summer! Seeing them all running would be by far the best vintage HVAC video on YT

    2:43 Anyone notice the Tombstone with the 3-bladed fan? Must be a replacement, but very unusual to see one of these with a 3-bladed fan.

      Surprised anyone would go out of their way to put a new motor in one of these, hard to find dual shaft replacements. But yes. Thanks for watching!

      I don’t think that was 3 bladed, one is kinda hidden

    This is the motherload of Tombstones. Not something you see every day. Epic finds

    I think the Tombstones were introduced in 1969, and were produced until sometime in the mid 80s... Pretty much one of the few A/C units that featured a dual shaft motor condenser fan assembly that channeled the air horizontally through a tunnel-like coil layout, they were very popular as well as exteemely efficient back in their day... They were made when York was the HVAC division of Borg-Warner... You rarely see even one anymore, much less this many in one area...

      tombstones came out in the mid 70s, fourth iteration of York's "Champion" line (which is why their official model name is the Champion IV). i believe they were discontinued around the time York introduced the Stellar series (around 1985/86 or so)

    I always hated those tombstones,,, all the controls are at the bottom make it very awkward to work on,, and twin shaft condenser fan motor with two blades,,,, silly..
    All that complexity and you gain nothing from it other than it being different...

    • @HVACExplorations
      @HVACExplorations  2 роки тому +2

      Yeah. Indeed they are very cool units though that’s for sure.

      @@HVACExplorations I agree that they're interesting and a very rare sight these days.
      The 2-3 ton units were long lived compared to the 3.5 thru 5 ton versions...

      They were a dumb design to say the least about them. Head pressure was always way to high when you’d walk up to one for service and they just ran hot. Fan motors were a pain in the butt to change. Coil damage was always excessive!
      The attributed longevity only stems from the fact that back in the day most folks would only run AC if they had too, it wasn’t considered a need like it is today with past generations who grew up without it and It was considered a luxury. So I’m sure most would be low hour units.
