Birds of the Yellow Sea

  • The intertidal mudflats of the Yellow Sea contain the most important stopover sites for migratory shorebirds in the East Asian-Australasian Flyway - a flyway that has transported birds from breeding grounds in the Russian and Alaskan Arctic to wintering areas in Southern Asia, Australia and New Zealand for hundreds of thousands of years. The productivity of the Yellow Sea’s mudflats and the food they provide to migratory birds are critical to the survival of many species.
This film provides a primer on the basic biological principles of migratory shorebird ecology and why the Yellow Sea is a critical international hub for bird migration.
Film is also available in Korean, Mandarin, Japanese and Russian.
Filmed and narrated by Gerrit Vyn

There is a Russian proverb dedicated to these birds: every sandpiper praises its swamp. Thank you very much for your work.

I moved to Ithaca in 1964 and was stunned to discover the Lab! 2 miles from my home and was able to rear my children to love and understand the beauty of birds and also to lead my G.S. troops in the same experience. The grad students met them early on Sat. mornings to explore and learn!
My son is now a bird photographer! It has been so exciting to see how the Lab. has grown! thank you SO much!

Really wonderful. Thank you, Mr. Vyn, for putting on the chest waders and lying in the muck, and walking the tundra, to get such amazing footage. Things I will never get to see in my lifetime except through your lens. Thank you so much!

I never realized that so many of these migrating birds depend on these mudflats. Thank you, Cornell, for keeping people from all parts of the globe informed through UA-cam.

What fantastic filmography! Scary to think that habitat loss through land reclamation (eg in South Korea) in the Yellow Sea could lead to the extinction of some of these species. :/

The person who is allowed to and can see all this is so incredibly privileged. It's hard work with regular hardships I suppose. I only mention the plague of mosquitoes. But despite these things, it remains an unprecedented privilege. Been to Siberia twice. Once in the Lena Delta and once in the Indigirka Delta. I will never forget those two trips in my entire life.
