@heatho1966 Luc isn't coming from a gipsy school of playing, he learned classical music (on cello), and have played every kind of music, including gipsy style. He's somewhere in a post-bop- contemporean - own style place. If you know him a little bit, you sure have noticed that he is excellent with meeting everykind of (excellent) musicians.
i will forever treasure this video. the best video of sylvain enjoying music with another hero tommy emmanuel. . heaven must be very glad to have you there maestro
i'm not into all this "who's better" stuff, but here it's so obvious that you can't not notice. Sylvain's knowledge about harmony that he displays here is out of this world. technique too. and the icing on the cake is how tastefully he applies all of that. but than again, being outplayed by Sylvain is not something to be ashamed of. kudos to Tommy to have the guts to sit next to a player of this caliber and keep up. he is a great, world class player after all, just not at the same level as Luc.
Heh, Tommy has some solid knowledge of jazz and can play it more than decently, but it's not his territory, it's Luc's. It isn't surprising that Luc would be the better player in this context. Tommy has other strengths, and despite not being in his primary element, he can still hold his worth. They're both stellar players.
It's more of a jazz piece on which they improvise which is why Sylvain Luc is the most comfortable because he is on his ground, but if they improvised on a blues piece then there Tommy Emmanuel would be much more comfortable than Sylvain. Bravo to Tommy for daring to venture into fields on which he is less comfortable.
It is amazing to see the connection here, both of these men are masters of their style. It is beautiful to see them appreciate each other like that with no ego what so ever. Tommy is not a Jazz player but he plays with such energy and talent that anything he touches is pure gold. Luc is just a master at this style of jazz and they both are pure talent. it is just incredible to me to see how they enjoy each other. true professionals. no ego, just music.
Thank you for this comment. I really hate these „who is better“-discussions. Both are absolutely incredible guitarists, but with different strengths. Tommy is more of a showman and plays with this incredible energy. Sylvain has the fluidity and harmonic understanding of a top jazz guitarist. As for Sylvain‘s tone, he plays a nylon string, which is notoriously difficult to amplify. The amplified Godin doesn‘t sound as good as an acoustic nylon string, but much better than most amplified classical guitars. Same for Tommy, by the way. I much prefer jazz guitars with a magnetic pickup, soundwise.
More than 13 years later there are only 10 morons downvoting this wonderful show of master skills, musicality and art. If being a human being is about anything, is making and enjoying art. This is pure art, from tha own Stevie Wonder's composition to this awesome rendition. Thanks aakieaak.
I was there as well. Came to see Sylvain in the first place, and Bireli Lagrene aswell. The latter had fallen ill, and Tommy Emmanuel was in the Netherlands anyway! I have to say that Sylvain really outplays Tommy in all ways possible. (note that Tommy is late every time when the should be playing unisonic!) Sylvain has a fabulous technique and a great choise of notes. One of the worlds geatest guitarist. Ever!
I hear the Joe Pass & Django influence, as the notes cascade off this frenchman's guitar. How can France's incredible musical genius be it's best kept secret?
It's actually not about who's best, but the wonderful interplay and spontaneity of two fabulous players. I caught up with Tommy recently here in NZ and he told me this was unrehearsed and totally on the spot... all i can say to sintygypsy comment below is that Tommy is incredibly generous with his time to young players, and if you went to his show you'd see the love he gives back to his audience, it's something pretty special in my book.
Wow Thanks for posting this. This is why utube is such a fantastic part of our current life. Capturing this moment and all of us being able to part of it. Two of my favourite players of all time especially Tommy. They both love their music and they are so brilliant.
Quality playing, never seen Tommy play this before - adds the Emmanuel magic as usual. Love the Bireli Lagrene version too obviously. Would love to see the 3 of them doing a version of this together someday.
You know it's great to hear these guys together because it helps put things into perspective. Tommy is amazing and is bringing so much love into the world. He is winning awards and touring the planet as the man, and yet somehow Sylvain seems even more enlightened...... and then there's Bireli.......... who makes Tommy seem almost pedestrian. I can't see the French men winning any USA guitar player awards and yet they make all the other guys seem like bums. What a strange world it is.
Tommy's solo is definitely less jazzier and more blues oriented and simple than Sylvain's solo, but he plays with such energy and convintion that he really makes me smile and have goosebumbs.
@emeraldomusik Totally agree, this sequence from Sylvain is just incredible. Such a classy and crazy way of getting out his chorus... This seems quite like superpowers to me too....
Im a Luc fan, But im not hearing that way. These guys are both completely in command of their notes, they just have different accents, Luc with a jazz accent, and Emmanuel with a blues accent. Thats like saying someone with a british accent speaks better than someone with a french accent.
Tommy is coming more from a Blues approach and Luc is definitely coming from a Gypsy school of playing. Comparing the two is like comparing Apple and Oranges. You are only expressing which one you prefer. They are both great in their own way!
To say, "outplays" is really a waste of time for you in thinking in that fashion - they are both amazing guitarists and in a rarified league of players that is comfortable and mostly brilliant playing any song, any style with anyone on stage - Sylvian was expecting Birelli and they played this song many times together, Tommy just sat in and perhaps only knew it by ear and perhaps never actually played it before - i dont know - they are both brilliant and every day i am grateful for you tube
They compliment each other well. Obviously Sylvain is a proper jazz guitarist and has a more advanced understanding of jazz soloing and harmony but that doesn't make him a better guitarist. They both have their strengths.
+James Anderson Sylvain is far beyond any other guitarist, if you consider all the aspects of the playing. He can do anything; play any kind of music. I saw him 30 times on stage; he never played twice the same thing. He is a genius (and I don't use this word easily).
@hideare I agree, Tommy Emmanuel cites Stevie Wonder as a big influence so this is probably a tune he knows well - and the style is definitely his own.
I juste would like to say one thing Sylvain Luc is not the geatest guitaris in the world, he is the best musician in the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
why do so many peope on UA-cam constantly watch things they dont like? I thought life was about doing things you like. Apparently its about disliking everything. Depressing...
i really like how tommy gave him the credit and brought the climax on 3:07 that is just goes to show tommy's devotion to music no matter where it comes. i really like sylvain, so talented, but when he makes all these faces while he improvises, makes think he's not as loyal to music like tommy rather than himself? hope no one is offended by this.
Pedestrian? You have no idea what you're talking about. Sylvian Luc is a great guitar player even though he has trouble keeping up in this clip. I don't know about french men winning awards has to do with anything, but I'm sure he could if he tried. Where do you get "pedestrian" and "bums" from? This guy is one of the best guitarists, musicians and song writers in the world. Do some homework..
You shouldn't compare Sylvain Luc - Bireli Lagrene - Tommy Emmanuel. The former two are expert jazz guitarists, Tommy (by his own admission) is not as expert a jazz guitarist as them. He often likes to play with people that are more expert than him in jazz (e.g. martin taylor). If you've ever seen Tommy Emmanuel live; you know that there is no label attached to what he gives you.
While I'm truly not worthy to judge who is the better player; I can definitely say that I like the sound of Tommy s guitar better. I'm sure it is a great guitar, but I just don't care for the tone of that Goodin...
Even if I don't look on godin guitars I feel SYLVAIN ' s tone cuts better in this duet while Tommy's is rather foggy ! Both are wonderful and upper class musicians . I think it's difficult to catch and record acoustic amplified guitars on the spot .
They both play well, just different styles. Sylvain plays more complex jazz phrases and Tommy plays catchy blues and R & B hooks and licks. That being said, I prefer the sound of TE's guitar over SL's tone.
Sylvain is great, no doubt, but he is playing his schtick here, of course he will sound better. If Tommy started playing Cannonball Rag, I think Sylvain would sound like crap. Methinks Tommy is a bit more versatile than Sylvain, whereas Luc has absolutely mastered his one thing. Both beyond excellent thats for sure!
All I can say is, even so-called "great" guitar players should just sit there and listen to Tommy. NOBODY can play with this guy.........they only take away from what he has to offer. Woody Woodpecker playing never did a THING for me. Just give me Tommy playing by himself.
Have you got your ears on back to front or no ears at all ? Sylvain is a master of technique with an indisputable command of improvisation and fluidity also hats off to tommy for chucking his obvious genius in the mix 🎸🎸🎶🎶
RIP Sylvain

I just say thank the good Lord that we have these guys who can improvise like this today and I feel so priviliged to walk the earth with them.
Two of the best Guitarists of our Time

Notice how Sylvain doesn't peek at his guitar once.
I hear the Joe Pass & Django influence, as the notes cascade off this frenchman's guitar. How can France's incredible musical genius be it's best kept secret?
we call this Strange thing "the french paradoxe"

it's not a secret that americans aren't really open to the "no english speaking" world...
Two of the greatest guitarists in history - two great artists have a great time and playing for audience. Superior musicians at work/play.
wow. Thanks for posting.
I was there as well! Came for Bireli Lagrene and left as a fan of the amazing Sylvain Luc!
Tommy's solo is definitely less jazzier and more blues oriented and simple than Sylvain's solo, but he plays with such energy and convintion that he really makes me smile and have goosebumbs.
ils sont extraordinaires !!
Bireli had to come that day, but he was ill. Verry pritty.
Sylvain N 1 au monde
@emeraldomusik Totally agree, this sequence from Sylvain is just incredible.
Such a classy and crazy way of getting out his chorus... This seems quite like superpowers to me too....
big smile on my face
OMG that was just superb !

+Pascal Solal Bireli Lagrene is like that though too...
Pascal and birelli
Breathtaking
Belle rencontre !!! FABULEUX
tommy can play every kind of music that's why he is best
Repose en Paix Sylvain !
Hey guys : Starting at 1.40s the way Sylvain plays the chords is just a pure inspiration... no need to mention the solo that follows...
the range of emotions, the ideas, the feeling... incredible. i'm talking about sylvain luc ;)
La tocan toda..
Merci.
Two crazy man
@emeraldomusik - Spot on! Good catch! :)
@hideare I agree, Tommy Emmanuel cites Stevie Wonder as a big influence so this is probably a tune he knows well - and the style is definitely his own.
Grande syilvan Luc
I think that tommy is familiar with this tipe of music. He is a pro.
duo virtuosoooooooooooo :):):)
grandeeeeeee tommi
super!!!
Both are awesome but Sylvain Luc to me is more musical and more tasty even if he is forced to overplayed because of the "battle" thing
Gypsy School? Sounds more like post-swing era to me. Bebop and modern jazz. Don't you think?
I gotta practice more.
i agree!
I juste would like to say one thing Sylvain Luc is not the geatest guitaris in the world, he is the best musician in the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the people who dunno silvan is better thn tommy, they r not there yet... hope u guys come up to this level soon....
Great, but at times gets too busy, especially when they seem to both be playing lead at the same time. My favourite is Sylvain by miles.
This is a music that Tommy isnt familiar with. But he keeps up great! And Sylvain...he is meant for duos, great backing! Both great musicians.
hideare he has s completely familiar he had covered this Stevie song tonnes
Its Isn't she lovely by Stevie Wonder...
"isn't she lovely" never sounded so good
why do so many peope on UA-cam constantly watch things they dont like? I thought life was about doing things you like. Apparently its about disliking everything. Depressing...
Can someone break down what Sylvain’s doing at 0:32 mark? Lol it’s crazy!
0:30 sorry. That little crazy lick lol
No one can, sorry.
Untill 0:23 there was at same earthquakes?
The second solo of Sylvain! 🤦🏻♂️
i really like how tommy gave him the credit and brought the climax on 3:07 that is just goes to show tommy's devotion to music no matter where it comes.
i really like sylvain, so talented, but when he makes all these faces while he improvises, makes think he's not as loyal to music like tommy rather than himself? hope no one is offended by this.

if you think he had trouble keeping up u truly have not a clue lololo1.
Yeah You're right. But Sylvain is the GOAT yet :D
While I'm truly not worthy to judge who is the better player; I can definitely say that I like the sound of Tommy s guitar better. I'm sure it is a great guitar, but I just don't care for the tone of that Goodin...
Even if I don't look on godin guitars I feel SYLVAIN ' s tone cuts better in this duet while
Tommy's is rather foggy ! Both are wonderful and upper class musicians . I think it's difficult
to catch and record acoustic amplified guitars on the spot .
sylvain luc come from neptune
sylvain never even looks at his guitar! stop dat
nice duo here...better in my mind than Lagrene's or J. Rosenberg's versions....loose free wheeling and swinging
What's the name of this theme?
You are kidding... Right? I guess you now for now☺️
Just in case... "Isn't she lovely" by Stevie Wonder
Is not she lovely ...good way to play...jazz has sense of humor ..
il prend un peu cher le tommy...
sylvain luc vraiment exellent
They both play well, just different styles. Sylvain plays more complex jazz phrases and Tommy plays catchy blues and R & B hooks and licks. That being said, I prefer the sound of TE's guitar over SL's tone.
Allah has blessed them with talent but they should wear the burka to show submission ;)
HAHAH WTF DUDE
NICE TROLL
Sylvain est top, mais Tommy rend un duet souvent en compitition d'énervement accélérée.
Both beyond excellent thats for sure!
eric congdon this is , isnt she lovely, so it's not a jazz song. If anything it's more Tommy's thing
All I can say is, even so-called "great" guitar players should just sit there and listen to Tommy. NOBODY can play with this guy.........they only take away from what he has to offer. Woody Woodpecker playing never did a THING for me.
Just give me Tommy playing by himself.
@ericcongdon Sylvain sounding like crap...
Have you got your ears on back to front or no ears at all ? Sylvain is a master of technique with an indisputable command of improvisation and fluidity also hats off to tommy for chucking his obvious genius in the mix 🎸🎸🎶🎶
