- There is so much more to see! For this video we continue further in and around the rock collecting area of the McDermitt caldera on one of the last days of our rockhounding tour of Southeast Oregon. We are in search of "Purple Cow," "Petrified Wood," "Serena Green," "Carnival," and "Gary Green" agates and jaspers. It is another amazing day!

Great video. Can't wait to go there soon. 🙏
So cool that you and Ruth have these rock hounding adventures together 😇; thanks again for sharing Krawdad
Thanks Bill! Yeah, it is a delightful blessing to have a hobby that we both enjoy doing in our down times!
nice trip , thats a good claim ,its loaded with all kinds of goodies , that garden rock is killer , sweet finds
Thanks Will! This was an amazing rockhounding destination. I hope to go again some day. Blessings to you!
Awesome finds! That looked like it was a fun trip. I think that’s a big ol limb cast. That pattern is awesome! Hope you’re doing well. Rock on brotha 💎👀💪🏼🕊️
Your channel popped up and saw you went to McDermitt. I’ve been rockhounding there for a good 20 years and just scratched the surface, it’s so huge. If you had turned right and headed out that way, you’d have found a most magnificent area where the pet wood is, what I call black obsidian pet wood with beautiful rings in it (I do not know the proper name for it) But you MUST wear gloves because that stuff is sharper than a scalpel. I sliced my entire palm open because I was too lazy to put a glove back on after eating lunch 😢And just prior to that area is another pet wood that looks just like beach wood. Also I recommend to people to venture off to the side roads. Every spot you stop you’ll find amazing specimens. There is also a tiny area where there is a very deep green petrified wood. The largest I’ve ever found is about 5 inches but most are 2-3 inches long. Not a lot on the surface so you’ll have to dig a bit for it but that stuff is solid and gorgeous. You’ll never leave disappointed in McDermitt. I’m going back for 5-6 days in mid-May. Thanks for taking us along with you. Great vids. I just subscribed. Rock on!!
Wow!Those areas sound amazing. We knew we were just touching the surface of McDermitt rockhounding having just a couple of days for exploring and that we would have to make some return trips. Now we have some more ideas where to hunt. Thanks!
Wow what a lot of nice finds. I love that log piece. Great video!
Thanks so much! Yeah, that log piece blew me away when I finally got done cutting it!
That interesting formation the dogs got into looks a lot like an old hot spring. Sileceous cinter or 'geyserite'forms around some highly mineralized springs and geysers in a ring like that. You were in a caldera, so it's possible that's what it was.
Thanks so much for your insight! That makes sense as that was also the only rounded off kind of formation that we saw. 👍🏼
Old disabled house bound dusty rusty rockhound here: 1st time seeing your channel. I'm impressed. Look forward to seeing more. Can't get out myself anymore....thanks for taking me along.
Thank you Kelly! I’m very happy to take you along! We should be able to get out rock hounding again soon.
18:00 looks like welded tuff from the mega eruption
The McDermitt loop is a very cool rockhounding experience. You both discovered some great rocks, and you found the Caldera Rock Shop! One of the best rock shops that I have ever visited, and the owners are truly awesome people for sure! The quality and variety of rocks that they work with make it well worth the visit! That huge yard rock you two wrangled into your truck was quite the beast! It looks very nice in your yard. Thanks for sharing!
Yes, we so enjoyed the Caldera Rock shop family! And we’d have been lost without them. I hoped to go back before we left to interview them and show what they offer, but we were out on the loop to long and ran out of time. Lord willing, I’ll be back!
Such a fun and beautiful video! Thank you for taking us along on your trip. I’m curious, how do you polish a big boy like that 127 lb garden rock?
@@juliarichmond5904 Thank you! We Polish big rocks with a 4” angle grinder that has a built in water feed. We start with course hard diamond discs to get the surface level then work through a series of 50 to 3000 grit diamond/resin discs. It is quite a bit of work and very wet, so it is best in warm weather. I told Ruth that I need to record her doing the whole process. She might go for it…
Awesome finds!!
Great video!!! I was wondering what time of year you went? Also any suggestions on where to camp?
Thank you!
We were there in early May.
Since the whole area is BLM, you can camp anywhere that is flat and clear enough. There are several cleared spots and places where groups could camp. We stayed at the RV park in town as we had previously been out dry camping for most of a week and wanted showers and electricity. 😉
I would highly recommend going by the Caldera Rock Shop before you go out. Really nice people and they gave us the best directions and helps that we got.
Thanks for the Info!! Do you think you could into the area at the end of March?
I really want to check out the McDermitt caldera, especially considering there’s a possibility of it being closed to the public if the lithium pit mines take over the area. I don’t think I realized how many different varieties there were in the area.

You realize the Gary Green is private property and you need permission to be on it right?
@@johnpacman9547 Yes, I know there are a number of private properties in the area like the Owyhee Caldera Minerals LLC. I’m not sure what it is like now. When we were there the BLM roads traversed private properties in several places like where the “Gary Green” is found.
@krawdadandrusty yes but as you stated in your video you accessed the claim to collect but didn't video it. It's a claim that's also private property. Thus accessing it with oit permission is theft. Just saying. Yes I know the owner. Not being an ass just hate seeing things like this said in videos and it makes others assume it's ok to access these places. It's not.
@@johnpacman9547 I watched the video and stand corrected! You are right and I thank you for pointing it out to me! I will edit out the GaryGreen parts or just take the vid down, which ever works best. Thanks again!
Why didn't you steal the lithium
😂
