  • Chicot is another one of my books told from a down to earth perspective. It is a bit of a fantastic biography. The book is told from the perspective of a character within the story. While Melina's story was obtained from numerous interviews, Chicot's story was put together by someone who grew up with him. Jozef paints all the different faces of Chicot. Since he is not a professional biographer type of person, Jozef only tells things as he sees it. As you read the book, you will realize that Jozef is not the most reliable narrator. Unreliable narrators is kind of my thing. Every human has its own biased, and Jozef is not different with that matter. Still, he is not the type of person to downplay Chicot's flaws. As far as flaws are concerned, Chicot has many of them. This is just part of designing a well-rounded type of person. This writing style also helps ground this fantasy story by limiting the point of view. As with most of my books, I have a decent number of battles. The bulk of the story focuses on the civil war occurring in the Kingdom, and how the merchant class tried to deal with the problem.

Chapter 25 (The Book has only 30 Chapters)
The New Year came with it King Berthame. It seemed that he had finally snapped out of his stupor or so called vacation. From the distance of the tower, I could see the feudal nearest of Little Sophia burning in the distance. He fell upon the rebelling kingdom like a storm. He swept through the entire kingdom and brought it back into submission.
As soon as King Berthame came back into the picture, the production line of weapons was immediately halted. Whatever was completed was shipped out, and we soon returned to business as usual. It was a bit refreshing to resume the manufacturing of compacts, perfumes, dresses, dolls and other trinkets. The production of instruments of war had affected everyone’s humors. Even Gytha and Chicot’s relationship was almost back to how it used to be. They went back to playing games, like they used to.
Though from time to time, when Gytha was not looking Chicot’s face darkened. I started getting possessed by a new idea. I could not help, but think that Chicot was plotting to kill Gytha. As a result of this suspicion, I started following Gytha around. At night, I would regularly sneak into her room to see if she was still breathing. This all naturally stopped one day when she awoke early and saw me watching her sleep.
She made a big fuss. Chicot who slept in the other room came to see what she was screaming about. When he saw me, he pulled me by the ear and took me out of the room, yelling “Get out! Get out!”
I felt ashamed and went to my room. I was not happy to see my mother waiting for me. Again, she told me, “Gytha is a married woman; it is unhealthy for you to be obsessing about her.”
“She may be legally married, but she is separated from Chicot, neither of them sleeps in the same room anymore,” I said.
Shocked, she said, “And just how do you know that! Ah, son! Find your own wife, and leave Gytha in peace. Show some respect for the man that put a roof over your head.”
“Yes mother,” I said to end this conversation.
Once she left, I was alone with my thoughts for some time. I heard movements outside my room. Based on the footsteps, I felt that Paula was coming to visit. I quickly turned off the light of my candles and feigned sleep. Like the first time we had met, Paula putted a knife in my throat and asked, “You awake.”
Pushing her back, I said, “What’s wrong with you?”
“I could ask you the very same thing?” she said chuckling,
“So you heard,” said I said sadly.
“Not a thing, my only concern is obeying my Lord Chicot’s wishes. And besides, I am not the kind of person to speak behind another’s back,” said Paula.
“Mmm…I have heard strange noises outside of the manor as of late. I haven’t been in town as of late. Have you noticed anything strange?” I asked.
“There are a lot of new faces,” said Paula.
“Yes, the town has grown a lot,” I nodded.
Sitting back, she then said, “It’s not just new faces, from time to time I see weird people wandering about the market. Chicot said he had hired new soldiers to help us. I never see these new people in the barracks, nor in the marketplace, the manor or even in the bar. When they talk, their words have a strange accent, and some do not speak our language all together. They also wear strange armors.”
“Mmm…that is strange. I was under the impression that everyone spoke our language,” I said thoughtfully.
“If it were up to Berthame, this would be so,” commented Paula.
“These people…do they look human?” I asked.
“Most of them do. However, there are some that are dwarvish, with green skin, long ears and crooked noses. I have never seen people that look like that," said Paula.
