This was the only scene from a Disney movie that ever gave me nightmares. After seeing this scene when I was a 4-year-old kid, I had a dream that I was standing at the bottom of a flight of stairs that were in the house where I lived at the time. The creepy music from this scene was playing, and Maleficent was standing in total darkness at the top of the stairs, with only her outline and glowing eyes visible. I wanted desperately to turn and run away, but all I could do was keep going up toward her, one step at a time, with my terror increasing every moment. Just as I was reaching the top step, I woke up.

0:15 -- Ladies and gentlemen, the single most terrifying thing witnessed by anyone who grew up on Disney movies. Myself included. When Maleficent's figure emerges from the shadows, with those *SATANIC GLOWING EYES*, only to disappear back into the darkness. I was shitting bricks for a week and had nightmares for the rest of my childhood. Even NOW, it's scary as shit to me.
You must be 12 year old if this scares you. I'd advise you not even go into Friday 13th movies or play FNaF and SlenderMan games which are mid difficulty compared to Amnesia, Outlast, Ring, Grudge ,Conjuring which are high diff scary thing. There are even Chuck Norris difficulty scary things out there. This shit is not even easy diff. Easy diff would be some UA-camr talking about some scary stuff or stories.
Forget the queen in Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, or the donkey scene in Pinocchio, not even Chernabog. This is the Disney scene that always scared me half to death when I was a kid, especially when Maleficent appears in the chimney. That had me in a corner crying. And then that creepy music and Aurora's slow walk. I couldn't stand it.
I was talking about imagery specifically. The Wicked Queen may be more evil, and I think we can agree that her and Maleficent's reasons to hate the main characters are quite petty. Envy and pride, which are sadly quite common. The donkey scene was creepy for sure, and the music made it much worse. But in terms of image in general, Maleficent in the chimney has always been the most scary for me for some reason. Is it the eyes? How still she is? She doesn't have a reason to be evil. She's an incarnation of it. If Snow White had been ugly, the queen would probably have left her alone, but Maleficent likely would've gone along with her plan anyway regardless of her pride. Like the three good fairies explained it, she doesn't know any love, thus unhappy, and since she couldn't achieve that, the next best thing for her was to cause suffering. Not being invited to a party was just an excuse.
@Michael Bruja True, but wanting to kill an innocent infant, that is even more evil. To cast a deadly curse upon a newborn infant... what could be more evil than that?
Maleficent calling Aurora's name sounds like the spirit in Frozen II calling out to Elsa - coincidentally, the singer that accompanies Idina Menzel in "Into the Unknown" is named AURORA
Bruh, I had no idea that's what the voice was saying! I thought it was wordlessly doubling the woodwinds, but it makes sense! I can kinda make out "Aurora" in the singer now.
It's funny because this music is from Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty ballet, where it underscores a whimsical dance between two cats. That haunting "Aurora" sound was originally a funny little meow.
The best horror scene Disney ever produced. It still makes me tremble. Really, that was a time when inside a Disney film you could find the laughter, romance, love, joy, fear and the horror. Nostalgia!
prettyboy Ian i know but everybody in the whole world was invited exept her so i would have done the same thing if i was evil ( don’t get scared ppl i won’t do it )
+Lee Alex mee too and not only because of the music, the most frightening part in this scene when Maleficent appears in the fireplace... those green eyes in the dark...
I love how dark and scary this scene is. Snow white and sleeping beauty has such beautiful art. The both have scary moments. Villains are more great when they are just plain evil. Miss 2D art
The voice softly calling her name still gives me the creeps. Barbara Luddy, the voice of Merryweather, did such a great job. The intensity of her voice while they're running up the stairs always gets me.
“You poor simple fools. Thinking you could defeat me, ME! The Mistress is all Evil!” -this is why she’s my favorite villain and favorite version of her. Everything about her is perfectly well done.
This scene really used to scare the living daylight out of me! Walt Disney during his lifetime really nailed these movies of his. If he wanted a scary scene such as this, he'd sure as hell put one in. This is gold compared to today's crap movies where the 'scary' scenes end up being hilarious...
Maleficent being such a powerful force, Aurora was instantly manipulated. I am sad that people judge the poor princess as stupid and flat. That is just an assumption. She was an innocent creature who grew up not being warned or taught what and who she was up against her entire life. In a way, I blame the Fairies for Aurora's fall into the Sleeping spell. They raised her for 16 bloody years and didn't even include her into the truth. Aurora was a dreamer, she was gifted and cursed all at once. An ordinary girl who met a kind man in the woods and she obeyed her 'Aunt's' about it and went back home to tell them, but all she got was all this change. She wasn't a normal girl, she was betrothed and was royalty and with a handful of all this responsibility suddenly and she was scared. Hence why she burst into tears...she didn't know how to take all this in. Then Maleficent appears to her as she is vulnerable (stupid fairies left her alone) and enchanted her against her will. To me Aurora took crap she didn't deserve to take. I am proud to say that she is one of my treasured princesses.
So many people say Aurora is a crap personality. I say she's a good personality that did not get the spotlight and focus she needed. Preach it, I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiments.
Imaginative Light i so agreed with you right now,all those people are so entirely stupid and retarded for judging Aurora. this was not her fault she being controlled by maleficent, the most powerful force in the movie, so how could Aurora refused to not prick her finger on that spindle? maleficent was for too powerful so how the hell could the poor girl fight back huh? and your right it is those stupid ass fairies fault they left her in that room. they didn't tell her about maleficent. all those 16 years and they still didn't warned her. and they were suppose the protect her from maleficent so it is their fault that Aurora got cursed.
I find it funny that "Maleficent" tried to fix that, because they specify that they weren't supposed to take her back until the day after her birthday. But even then they couldn't avoid the curse, so I guess that just says that it was always inevitable
I think that's supposed to be her face right before the spell took effect. She hears Maleficent call her name, is confused and then the hypnosis kicks in and she just freezes. She's frozen for the entire scene other than walking and reaching towards the spindle at the end. So i think that's why.
Clayton Newitt That's why I didn't like the Maleficent movie so much, she turned Maleficent into this nice person at the end when she was just this evil woman
The parts that get me to this day. Maleficent appearing in the fire place. The evil coming from her as she so effortlessly undid 16 years of hiding Aurora from her. And when The Fairies scream, "Don't touch ANYTHING..." Aurora heard them...but Maleficent was too strong.
I like her dress better when it's blue. It's funny her dress is blue though out the whole movie, but in real life when people draw her or dress up like her they are always wearing the dress in the pink color makes no sense. Guess people like Flora better than Mary weather. The Fire place scene still creeps me out when she is just singing Aurora's name
I think its because Cinderella wears blue (more like silver in the movie) for Disney Princess merchandise. Ariel wears a pink dress too... but no one depicts that either.
Her dress is originally pink because when Flora was making the dress, the original color of the fabric was pink. Merry Weather last minute decided to change it blue. The dress is pink, but it can go both ways. This is just my opinion, but pink flattered her most. And there's also a scene where Merry Weathers dress turned pink and that flattered her most as well. Lol
I swear to god. The beginning of this scene used to scare me when I was a kid. The way the fire goes out and maleficent appears out of nowhere. And worst of all. The soundtrack that was with this scene.
+Jewelangels LPS I think the whole confusion comes from Artevia saying "them" and Shivashanker thought she meant "them" as in the fairies. Not "them" as in the musical chorus.
Jewelangels LPS I don't know what you're hearing as they were clearly shouting "Rose". They're not gonna suddenly start calling her "Aurora" after 16 years of calling her "Briar Rose".
Jewelangels LPS And that was the only time the fairies ever referred to her as Aurora. As I said, after 16 years of calling her "Rose", they're not going to suddenly start referring to her by her real name. Especially if she's not going to immediately respond. Even if you haven't seen the full movie, you could've just rewatched the video and listened closely. Not once did the fairies ever say "Aurora".
I was in a musical version of Sleeping Beauty written by the people who run the theatre company I go to and in that version the witch was a spider lady and the king killed her spider children so she decided to kill his child
But not a single party . I mean , how would you feel if there is a royal party and people you know didnt invite you knowing they are very important And powerful people? , was a very important and históric royal party for these imaginative kingdom , for some reason maleficent gets offended and wanted revenge for being humiliated
I'd grow the fuck up cause its just a god damn party. None of that is worth murdering a dumb teenage girl over....16 years later and I type this as a self appointed queen. I'm just saying this reaction was a bit excessive lol.
in the original story..Melificent was in love with Stefan and he left her for Aurora's mother..this is her getting back at Stefan, it had nothing to do with the party
Ugh I remember this scene terrified me when I'd watch this in the 90s as a child. It had an older eerie quality that I still find quite frightening. That music did not help.
Hated hated hated hated HATED this scene as a kid. Even now, at 19 years old about to go on 20, it still gives me chills. Maleficent is the creepiest Disney villain to me
I remember when I was real young,, those eyes in the fireplace always scared the crap out of me and I would hide under the bed. What so funny is I've watched this movie I don't know how many times and I still jump at that scene.
Omg so did I!!! I still can't watch this movie in the dark cause if do I get the chills thinking I am seeing those glowing eyes somewhere in my house including sleep with the light on.
I'm in my 20s and still not going to watch this before I go to sleep. Or else I'll have visions of Maleficent's eyes watching me from around my door... like I used to!
LOL I'm 25 and planning on joining the Air Force and perhaps trying out for the volunteer fire department and this STILL to this very day scares me! Horror movies got nothing on this and the Night on Bald Mountain scene from Fantasia! :O
@@catherine.-dr4zp When Rose was weeping and Maleficent came into view in the fireplace before becoming green ball beckoning Rose upstairs into the sewing room to touch the spindle.
Can we just take a moment to appreciate how well this was made, and directed. No monsters jumping out, no stupid violence or corny crap dumbed down for modern idiots. The music, the way the fire goes out to reveal maleficent dimly lit in the fire place. It's just so perfect in my opinion. Shows that you really don't need special computer effects, or the best technology. Just a good story, and imagination. The right music sets the atmosphere too.
I always loved Maleficent as she is the greatest Disney villain of all time. She is the only villain that is pure evil and has no need of any kind of desire that other villains crave whether its a woman, wealth or even power. She has a huge gothic castle, demonic minions and most of all, all the powers of Hell itself. That's what I love about Maleficent. She is evil and does evil things just for the sake of being evil. She's kind of like the Terminator on the points that she can't be bargained with, reasoned with and doesn't feel pity, remorse or fear. Maleficent can be terrifying when she wants to be. Sure other Disney villains can be scary by being loud, upfront and in your face whereas Maleficent will always be subtle (like in the fireplace) and that makes her more frightening.
+Jonathan Spindler Amen, no one can ever top Maleficent!!!! That frightening woman has always scared me ever since I was 4 when I first saw the movie!!!!!!!!
This scene used to scare me so much when I was a kid, the idea of being mind controlled still freaks me out as an adult. Still, I appreciate the music and how the tension builds as she approaches the spindle.
Robot Rock no but he is older then Aurora by about mmm 🤔 4-5 years? In the beginning of the movie Phillip looks about 4 while Aurora was most likely a newborn
@@aliciacleeland2257 I'm getting tired of that stupid meme. "Wao, how great, she said that you can't marry a men you just met. What a feminist..." Yeah
The main thing that first scared me was when I saw Maleficent’s face In the darkened fireplace and that was when I saw the movie the second or third time around because I think I was reading the book version of this movie (the Disney edition) to follow along with the film so when I saw her I got nervous and thought she might actually harm or attack Aurora rather than lure her to her death. Looking back now I can now see that while she was looking at Aurora she herself did not want Aurora to see her.
Fun interesting trivia though; The music is actually a piece taken from the classic Sleeping Beauty ballet by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, from one of the final acts of the play called "Puss in Boots & The White Cat". As you can tell by the name, this segment was originally a cute and enjoyable scene with two cats dancing with each other. Thanks to this movie, though, this music piece now sounds too dark and eerie for a ballet segment like that. (now that we can also hear a voice chanting Aurora's name in the background at times 😰😰😰)
@@a.j.medialover Wow that's actually really interesting! Guess you learn something everyday! But that is interesting how they turned a piece for a cute and ligjt hearted moment to one of my childhood traumas 😂
Especially considering, for one brief moment, she almost comes back to her senses. The way she hesitates and withdraws her hand just after hearing those words gives the impression she was just starting to become aware how screwed she is.
Aurora is so beautiful in the blue gown and Tchaikovsky's music is simply spellbinding. Sleeping Beauty will always be Disney's most elegant fairytale masterpiece.
SirenSima Thank you for telling me. @@kayseecoward7571 The Hellfire sequence is more spectaculary scary. This is just plain creepy. It helps that Maleficent doesn't have a song in her movie. Even if depraved and repulsive, Hellfire is still a song so it's less scary to me.
You poor simple fools....thinking you could defeat me, the mistress of all evil! I wonder if Disney even bothered to watch Sleeping Beauty before making Maleficent. This line means that Maleficent worships evil. It's like Disney forgot that they made the character in the first place, which makes me afraid of the sequel or anything live action from Disney.
It's like they're afraid to have anymore evil villains. Villains that will do anything to get what they want no matter how many lives they take. Or even better, villains that don't want anything. They just want to ruin everyone's lives just to laugh at them and take pleasure in what they do. Like Maleficent, she enjoys creating chaos and pain.
2:32 It's so well detailed to see that Aurora had stopped/resisted for just a 1~2 second when Merriweather warned her. Only if she resisted for just few second, this wouldn't have happened.
Eesh. I hate those trumpets that sound whenever the fire or Maleficent's light orb flares up. It always made me jump as a kid. Now it just makes my heart jump. And I had no idea the choir was saying "Aurora". Creepier and creepier...
When i was younger, Maleficent was the scariest villain there was! I havent seen this film in so long but she is still pretty scary! Cant believe how old this film is!
Weird. Maleficent never scared me even after she turned into a dragon. It was Ursula on the other hand that scared me right after she mutated herself into jumbo Ursula. Ugh.
How did I never notice that it's saYING HER FREAKING NAME? I ALWAYS THOUGHT IT WAS JUST CREEPY SINGING, NOT "AURORA". Now, this is 10 times scarier than it ALREADY was for me as a kid!
Say what you will about the problems in the Disney version of Sleeping Beauty, but you've GOT to give them credit for having her get hypnotized into pricking herself rather them being the trusting idiot that she was in the original.
this used to scare the shit out of me when I was a kid, and it still does. it’s so haunting, the quiet singing of “Aurora,” those diabolical green eyes, and Aurora walking into a trance following the voice. Pure terror.
I hated what Disney did with the new Angelina Jolie film. By itself, it would have been a good movie, but the Disney version of Sleeping Beauty... Is this! No King Stefan being bad and Maleficent raising her in the woods. It's all too far away from the original story. Bah!
Angela Rupp Well, It's because we don't want to make disney less creative by making another remake without a twist or anything. It's like idk, rewatching the original?
The music completes the scene. This scene was the most frightening scene in the movie. Always scared me horribly as a kid. Still gives me chills to this very day.
No lie but I'd really thought this scene was the most scariest and darkness moment from all disney princess I'd ever seen as a child I would get too scared so I would either covered my eyes or just hide behind against a wall waiting for this scene to be over especially that music at the background makes it even a lot creepier. This scene is so psychological and disturbing! Even after watching it many times, I still feel the suspense!
Was anyone else scared shitless when they were younger? This scared me so bad that I slept with the hall light, closet light, and the t.v on when I was little

Logan Carter Don't judge me. There are just people who is scared at scenes like this but not at those shitty horror games. Fnaf? Really?

LEGOMANIAC419 You hit the nail on the head
Shaggy Rogers Oh shut up
Forget the queen in Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, or the donkey scene in Pinocchio, not even Chernabog. This is the Disney scene that always scared me half to death when I was a kid, especially when Maleficent appears in the chimney. That had me in a corner crying. And then that creepy music and Aurora's slow walk. I couldn't stand it.
This scene and the donkey one fucked me up
I was talking about imagery specifically.
No Aurora don’t listen to her hey over here don’t listen to her
It's funny because this music is from Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty ballet, where it underscores a whimsical dance between two cats. That haunting "Aurora" sound was originally a funny little meow.
God the music is so GOOD at setting the mood for the scene
Fun fact: the music is originally for the ballet and it is the Dance of Puss in Boots and the White Cat
The best horror scene Disney ever produced. It still makes me tremble. Really, that was a time when inside a Disney film you could find the laughter, romance, love, joy, fear and the horror. Nostalgia!
Original disney didn't sugar coat..

“You poor simple fools. Thinking you could defeat me, ME! The Mistress is all Evil!”
-this is why she’s my favorite villain and favorite version of her. Everything about her is perfectly well done.
Well, here's your precious princess.
what makes this more creepy is that maleficent is singing aurora in the beginning of the scene
This scene really used to scare the living daylight out of me! Walt Disney during his lifetime really nailed these movies of his. If he wanted a scary scene such as this, he'd sure as hell put one in. This is gold compared to today's crap movies where the 'scary' scenes end up being hilarious...
+William Beresford more like the magic of Disney movies died when Walt died tbh
+cool muso Very Hitchcock.
Imagine if Walt had decided to make horror movies instead of animated family films.... Oh god....
Disney can still make some scary movie-scenes here and there though, for example, Mor'du (as a bear) from Brave was pretty terrifying.
You mean scary scenes in Disney movies? If yes, I agree.
Scary scenes in horror movies? Lol no.
MagicEmperor awww... Just my thoughts on the whole thing, but thank you.
I’ve always had a soft spot for Aurora in the entire Disney franchise.
For me it wasn't maleficent that scared me to death but aurora's face and green light.
true!!! that face at 0:30-0:34...
And the music
I love how she reacts to Merryweather shouting don't touch anything. Such a subtle moment!
Now that I'm older, I can hear the vocalized "Aurora" done by Maleficent (the high pitched call that is very creepy)
i literally never understood why they brought her back on the evening of her birthday instead of just waiting until morning....
I find it funny that "Maleficent" tried to fix that, because they specify that they weren't supposed to take her back until the day after her birthday. But even then they couldn't avoid the curse, so I guess that just says that it was always inevitable
Or perhaps they should have prepared Aurora not just for her return to the palace, but for her inevitable slumber.
“Literally?”
I know it's supposed to look like Aurora's hypnotized, but her expression looks more like she thinks 'Dafuq is dat?' XD
True very True
YEAHH!!! DAFUQ IS THAT!!!
that's what I was thinking like she has the one raised eyebrow just staring like what the hell?!?
I think that's supposed to be her face right before the spell took effect. She hears Maleficent call her name, is confused and then the hypnosis kicks in and she just freezes. She's frozen for the entire scene other than walking and reaching towards the spindle at the end. So i think that's why.
I made a huge mistake watching this scene in my room in the dark. God, the chills.
Same.

I never noticed how dark sleeping beauty was, or any of the vintage films. I wish they stayed like this.
As a 27-year-old, I watched this movie from start to finish for the first time two days ago. Even as an adult, this scene creeped me out.
Maleficent... the mistress of all evil... Someone needs to remind Disney of that.
ikr? Why did they have to remake her as a Wicked ripoff Motherly figure?
Clayton Newitt That's why I didn't like the Maleficent movie so much, she turned Maleficent into this nice person at the end when she was just this evil woman
it's sad that Kingdom Hearts handled Maleficent better than freakin Disney could
It's the title of the new sequel movie
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.
You have predicted the upcoming movie!!!
The parts that get me to this day. Maleficent appearing in the fire place. The evil coming from her as she so effortlessly undid 16 years of hiding Aurora from her. And when The Fairies scream, "Don't touch ANYTHING..." Aurora heard them...but Maleficent was too strong.
T_T
I like her dress better when it's blue. It's funny her dress is blue though out the whole movie, but in real life when people draw her or dress up like her they are always wearing the dress in the pink color makes no sense. Guess people like Flora better than Mary weather.
The Fire place scene still creeps me out when she is just singing Aurora's name
It annoys me so much when people make toys, costumes, etc and change the whole thing so it appeals to 5 yr olds 😒
I know right lol
I think its because Cinderella wears blue (more like silver in the movie) for Disney Princess merchandise.
Ariel wears a pink dress too... but no one depicts that either.
Her dress is originally pink because when Flora was making the dress, the original color of the fabric was pink. Merry Weather last minute decided to change it blue. The dress is pink, but it can go both ways. This is just my opinion, but pink flattered her most. And there's also a scene where Merry Weathers dress turned pink and that flattered her most as well. Lol
But it's blue though out the whole movie, you would think to actually make it blue lol
1959: "Touch the spindle"
2019: "Something is pulling me, it's so magnetic"
Yes!
I swear to god. The beginning of this scene used to scare me when I was a kid. The way the fire goes out and maleficent appears out of nowhere. And worst of all. The soundtrack that was with this scene.
Morgan Bailey Oh my gosh, RIGHT?! It gave me nightmares!
That big sound when they touched the spindle though...
Years later I barely realized that in the music it's singing "Aurora" - creepy!!!
What do you mean?
AAAH OH MY GOD I've NEVER noticed that!!! MIND BLOWN!!!!
If you pay close attention you can hear the them say "Aurora" makes this seen so much scarier.
They said rose
They say Aurora.
+Jewelangels LPS I think the whole confusion comes from Artevia saying "them" and Shivashanker thought she meant "them" as in the fairies. Not "them" as in the musical chorus.
Jewelangels LPS
I don't know what you're hearing as they were clearly shouting "Rose". They're not gonna suddenly start calling her "Aurora" after 16 years of calling her "Briar Rose".
Jewelangels LPS
And that was the only time the fairies ever referred to her as Aurora. As I said, after 16 years of calling her "Rose", they're not going to suddenly start referring to her by her real name. Especially if she's not going to immediately respond. Even if you haven't seen the full movie, you could've just rewatched the video and listened closely. Not once did the fairies ever say "Aurora".
All this because she didn't get invited to a party
I'm just saying this reaction was a bit excessive lol.
in the original story..Melificent was in love with Stefan and he left her for Aurora's mother..this is her getting back at Stefan, it had nothing to do with the party
...OH COOMONN!!! ...PLEASE SAY THAT YOU ACTUALLY HAD READ THE BOOK?!!!

I know, her final laugh is perfection, long live Eleanor Audley!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Indeed, and she sounds a lot like the stepmother from Cinderella because they are played by the same actress.

...wait. what you have seen?
Yes the new movie descendants is about their kids and maleficent is one of the moms I can't wait to see how her daughter turns out

You know for a kids movie. The music is REALLY intense. It's very fitting.

Aurora is so beautiful in the blue gown and Tchaikovsky's music is simply spellbinding. Sleeping Beauty will always be Disney's most elegant fairytale masterpiece.
Maleficent scared me so much when I was little.
The funny thing is that the ominous music playing in this scene was used in a comedic scene in the original ballet.
What???It scared the c*ap out of me when I was young (it still does actually). And you're telling me it was used in a COMEDIC scene? No words.
Serena Cocco Yes, and it involved cats. XD Look up "White Cat - Sleeping Beauty ballet"

I was such a wimp!
Whoever's disliked...why? There are so many dislikes...are you just angry Aurora 'fell in love with someone she just met'? Do just hate classic films?
Everyone talks about the donkey transformation thing in Pinocchio and Clayton's death in Tarzan but *NOBODY EVER TALKS ABOUT THIS UNNERVING AND SCARY SCENE* !
It’s definitely unnerving but it has nothing over the Hellfire sequence in The Hunchback of Notre Dame
@@kayseecoward7571 The Hellfire sequence is more spectaculary scary. This is just plain creepy. It helps that Maleficent doesn't have a song in her movie. Even if depraved and repulsive, Hellfire is still a song so it's less scary to me.

I wonder if Disney even bothered to watch Sleeping Beauty before making Maleficent. This line means that Maleficent worships evil. It's like Disney forgot that they made the character in the first place, which makes me afraid of the sequel or anything live action from Disney.
that's a great point
It's like they're afraid to have anymore evil villains. Villains that will do anything to get what they want no matter how many lives they take. Or even better, villains that don't want anything. They just want to ruin everyone's lives just to laugh at them and take pleasure in what they do. Like Maleficent, she enjoys creating chaos and pain.

And the fact she was, for a brief second, able to fight the curse when she heard Merryweather.
Sleeping Beauty should be considered a horror movie just for this scene! So terrifying omg!
