also you can use music boxes so when you're in the cavern layer it doesnt mess with the atmosphere that you built/keep the grasslands immersion.

If you wanted to avoid the clunky movement between platforms, you could make a texture pack to simply remove the texture for a flying mount like the witch's broom, the cosmic car keys, or the shrimpy truffle and then have the player ride that instead of walking everywhere. The downside is that you would probably lose the walking animation.
