This particular entry was not meant to win, it was meant to represent the victory of the Ukrainian people at the Orange Revolution. This song will enter Ukrainian history.
This is one of my favourite Ukrainian entries. Great meaning and fantastic passion during the performance. Hugely underrated by many. I stand by my choice . Brilliant song.
I actually didn't know this song was performed at Eurovision. All these years I only knew it as an anthem of Orange Revolution. And I've liked this song all along so I'm surprised to read all these negative comments here. Now I came back to this song because of the invasion on Ukraine and my heart is breaking. Slava Ukraini.
I instantly liked this even though I didn't understand what it was about at the time. A catchy, energetic song that should've scored higher. Recent events in the news reminded me of this and I wish our Ukrainian friends a peaceful future 🤞💙💛
I think the hallmark of a great Eurovision entry, is when the feeling the song's trying to convey translates through the language barrier. I had no idea what this song was about, when I was 10, but I still understood the feeling of anger, protest, and rebellion. It's still one of my favorite songs to this day, because of the feelings that it invokes in me. Well done, Ukraine.
Really? I have the same language barrier, but IMHO I found it completely meh, I don't feel the emotion, the chorus is completely flat, and even the rap isn't emotional. 1944 was much, MUCH better with raw emotion.
З 2021 року виглядає не погано, коли пішов реп, то я не любитель його, але тут голос був крутий і такі вставки з різних мов і постановка виглядають дуже круто, "Разом нас багато нас не подолати".
More important than Ukraine’s placement in the contest is that this song brought the spirit of the people to such a large audience. The struggles and protests of Ukraine are illuminated at a literal Eurocentric stage for the west to see. “Razom nas bahato, nas ne polodati” (Together we are many, we will not be defeated) was a popular chant from the orange revolution. In the original version of the song, there was no English, and they mentioned Yuschenko by name. GreenJolly tried to dial it down for more appeal, but that strategy did not work (Neither does rapping in Eurovision most of the time). However, rap is a really good medium for activists, even if this song was not the most pleasing, I still think they accomplished their goal on one of, if not the biggest European stage.
It looks strange that you wrote the word "Ukraine" only in small letters, and the word "Russia" only in large ones. But nevertheless, I fully support your message! Slava Ukraini
Though this song seems to be disliked by many people in the comments, "Razom Nas Bahato" represents so much more than just a song. In fact, it applies to many of the different levels of time within the Eurovision Song Contest presented by Philip V. Bohlman in his article Tempus Edax Rerum: Time and the Making of the Eurovision Song. In this article, Bohlman presents his reasons as to why the Eurovision Song Contest, a show labeled as “silly” and “wacky”, should be taken seriously. He does this by focusing on “one of the most distinctive attributes of music, the fact that it takes place in time.” By drawing from Mikhail Bakhtin’s idea of chronotope, “in which cultural fields and human action take place at the intersection of time and place,” Bohlman divides this notion of time into six different levels, or as he puts it, “temporalities”. These different levels of time not only provide categories for the meanings behind Eurovision songs, but also highlight the significance of the contest in regards to how important the performances and songs are for audiences and their nations. “Razom Nas Bahato” is a great example of the intersection between these temporalities presented by Bohlman. Firstly, it applies to “Musical Time”, which refers to the structure of the contest's songs. Because each song must be three minutes long, the bridge becomes an important sight of difference within songs, where the most originality is shown and the true identity of the song is showcased. In “Razom Nas Bahato”, the bridge allows for a shift in style within the song, where according to Bohlman it goes from “socialist Kampflieder, both East Europeans and in the styles of Chileans resistance songs from the Allende period, to African American urban protest." Secondly, the song applies greatly to the idea of “Historical/Narrative Time”, which refers to the historiographical notion of a song, and its culturally and politically relevant narrative. “Razom Nas Bahato” refers directly to the corruption of the 2004 Ukrainian presidential election, and eventually became the official song of the Orange Revolution, a group of protesters who called for an election revote. Lastly, the song applies to a third temporality, that of Performative/Embodied Time, which refers to other ways in which an audience can relate to a song, such as through costume, theme, color, and/or dance. In “Razom Nas Bahato”, the dancers begin with their hands in shackles, later on breaking free from them. This represents the message of the song, of people who cannot be defeated banding together, of being free from the corruption and protesting it. In sum, this song is quite important for multiple reasons, all of which should be considered by its audiences, whoever they may be. “Razom Nas Bahato” is a great example of how significant the Eurovision Song Contest is, perfectly showcasing why it should be taken seriously.
What a shame we only got to hear the singer's phenomenal voice right at the end; if he'd had a chance to showcase it the whole way through this could have scored much higher!
Мені здається, що ця пісня має коріння десь аж в 13 столітті :) "з'єднаних нас ніхто не зломить" - за легендою, це слова Святополка ІІ, князя (герцога) Гданьського Помор'я. Таак, досі актуально.
