  • Malaysia is a land rich in history, culture, and traditions that span centuries. From the golden era of the Malay Sultanate to the colonial period and the dawn of independence, each state across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak holds unique legacies that shape the nation's identity. These stories of heritage are further enriched by Malaysia’s multicultural society, with each ethnic group contributing distinct ways of life, beliefs, and traditions that form the fabric of our shared history.
Heritage Around Us is a monthly sharing session initiated by ICOMOS Malaysia, aimed at uncovering and celebrating lesser-known culturally significant buildings, structures, objects, arts, traditions, and stories that hold potential heritage value. These invaluable cultural assets-whether recognized at the state or national level-may be hidden in plain sight or exist in remote areas, waiting to be documented and shared with the wider community.
While iconic landmarks in cities like Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Malacca are well-documented and celebrated, there are countless untold stories found in small towns and rural areas. These historic buildings, structures, or traditions often carry deep cultural significance, yet remain unknown due to limited documentation or their remote locations. By uncovering these stories, we can ensure that these important elements of our heritage are preserved for future generations.
ICOMOS Malaysia invites its members to contribute to this initiative by submitting an abstract of no more than 300 words on a culturally significant subject-be it a building, object, tradition, or story-accompanied by relevant photographs or supporting documents. Selected abstracts will be featured in our Heritage Around Us sessions to inspire deeper exploration and research within Malaysia’s rich heritage landscape.
    Submission Details:
Please email your abstract and completed submission form to admin@icomos-malaysia.org for review by the organising committee.
Let us uncover, document, and celebrate the hidden heritage around us.
    Thank you.
