I think Otto expected Daemon NOT to give the egg, BECAUSE it was Otto who asked. Then Otto would have reported that back to the king, which would have further escalated the rift between Deamon and Viserys. I mean, I don't think Otto cared about getting the egg back.
And if you notice in that scene Commander Westerling seems to disapprove of the language that Otto uses, especially at the "mummer's farce". I think he might be on to Otto's intentions to provoke some kind of reaction from Daemon in front of all the witnesses.
Daemon seems to want acceptance from his family, maybe hoped they would give him the egg happily. I think he’s just attention seeking really -throwing his egg out of the pram 🤷♀️
I felt that Otto went to Dragonstone happy to fail in retrieving the egg, provoke the Prince to Civil War and return bearing tales that Daemon was out of control. He knew it was a calculated risk going in person, and that suggests his elder brother Lord Hobert Hightower is up to speed with Otto’s plans. Conversely Daemon brings the egg because he knows he has to give it up and just wants to taut a little with it first.
I do think that Otto felt it would be dangerous for Viserys to go to Dragonstone. The man was falling apart and I would question if he could make any cross-country voyage.
Amazing analysis as always guys 🙏 Im as excited for your review as I am for another episode of the show. Looking forward to your interview with Ryan C!
On the point of Otto giving Rhaenyra good advice, at this point she is his preferred heir over Daemon. While he is trying to manipulate Viserys into having more children, he is also starting to set up a backup plan where he tries to rule through Rhaenyra. He's being a Tywin/Varys/Littlefinger level player of the game in making sure he's prepared to work every scenario to his advantage.
What was crazy about the whole dragonstone scene on the steps is that you can see rhaenyra standing and the sun is always over her head and it’s crazy that the egg that she retrieved is sunfyre and we all know the madness that goes on 😵💫 seems like foreshadowing
1:30:30 people do forget crabs are carnivorous. If you pass out on shore and cant move, such as in the case of marrooning and then passing out from dehydration, it has been known for crabs to just get to eating. Or if a dead body is on shore crabs have been found burrowed in the flesh. A disgusting image, but a good one to keep in mind for the impression a character like this is going for.
Why would a Targaryen (other than Baelor) know how to pray to the Seven? The Princess is riding her dragon, that is praying for them. Or lighting a candle at Balerion's skull. Allicent's faith is likely to prevent pre-marital shenanigans.
38:36 This discussion reminds me of my belief/feeling/interpretation about the show The Crown. Maybe this just reveals things about myself, but I believe that an ongoing and primary theme of that show is that the system of the monarchy victimizes literally everyone involved, from the normal people in the UK, all the way up to the Queen herself and every person in her family. Obviously, there are benefits to being royal, and they (mostly) do not need to worry about violence, unlike ASoIaF, but there is not a single character in that show who is not harmed, often continuously in many ways, by the system.
The best scene In S1 Ep2 has to be Rhaneryra and Daemon on the bridge. A close second is when Rhaenys talks to Rhaenyra about her chances of being the Queen.
Otto expected Damien to tell him to get lost, and then he could go back to the king and create a bigger rift between them. Basically, how he claimed he said, heir for a day. Otto wants Damien completely banished, killed, gone, but knows he needs the king to do it.

I get the feeling that because Viserys isn't big on dragons himself (do we know if he had an egg hatch for him?) and the way he said they were a power that never should have been unleashed on the world, that perhaps people are forgetting how powerful the Targaryens can be. It's also apparent that the maesters and Otto don't like the idea of using the dragons...they never bring it up.
He was the last rider of Balearian the black dread, Aegon the conquerors dragon. Rode for a brief time in his youth and never bonded with another dragon
The fact that Laena is so obviously the morally inappropriate choice, is also obvious that she is the politically right choice. So it's right and wrong at the same time.
I’m not sure the dragon was her idea. The half second of her scratching her fingers just before she gave the gift makes me feel this entire scene is orchestrated by her father. I think Aliscent is being played really well. She seems incredibly torn and put in very difficult position.
In history there definitely were marriages among royal and high standing families where the bride and/or groom were still children. Sometimes very, very young, so the marriage would take place but the kid(s) essentially continued living with their family until they were at the age of consent. It wasn't uncommon. In some parts of the world it's still done. We tend to view this whole business through our modern, western sensibilities. We imagine child rape, so we're scandalized. But that's our ignorance of history and other cultures. Not saying rape never occurred, but people and societies everywhere understand the sensitivity needed, and also the value of marriage as a legal and social compact that supported the running of things.
I thought Otto showing up there was not a very smart move. I didn't get the decision on Ottos part, I feel like he is a little more strategic than that. Possibly a case of "he had more men off screen" or a VERY calculated risk. Not sure I liked the way it came off w Otto and his small platoon of dudes walking uphill in an easily ambushed choke point knowing there was a dragon.
Shame on you guys for having a visually better looking intro. The HotD intro is a great concept with the family tree made of rivers of blood to depict the bloodline. Great idea but execution is so mediocre. If I was in charge of designing the intro sequence, it would have been a a detailed tour of Kingslanding including Maegor's Holdfast, Dragonpit, the Faith building, and the city gates. Then explore Dragonstone, Stepstones, Driftmark and then Oldtown and Harrenhal if they'd feature in this season. This could have been done in addition to the bloodline and then make the intro music darker and deeper. Then the last 30 seconds, high notes like the normal one. Instead what we got is simply lazy.
I appreciate the show's commitment to established lore so far, but yes Corlys talking about his Driftwood Throne immediately followed by Daemon's snide remark about being a King's brother was very confusing.
I think that all of this discussion about Viserys marrying MUCH younger girls is warranted, but GoT had Margaery and Tommen, which seemed like a pretty decently large age gap too. It is not quite as large as the one's on display in HotD right now (and it is a bit different in the books), but we have to keep in mind that we have been seeing stuff like this the whole time. Speaking of which, Drogo and Dany is the first example, and that really is pretty much right at the beginning.
I wish they had spent more time with their wig selection. I feel like Viserys looks older than he is meant to, and same w Rhaenys. They come off as old and grey.

Strongly disagree about Viserys and Alicent being intimate before the betrothal, when Otto is heading off to Dragonstone he told her to "Go to the Kings chambers tonight." which she then dutifully replied and looked angry at him (I believe this would be the first tie they met in his chambers at night). I think he was planning for all of it to happen, Daemon to be stubborn and either to mess up entirely by slaying the King's Hand and some Kingsguard, or Rhaenyra would come and save the day, either way, Alicent would have been right by Viserys' side as all of this was going down and they already had developed a relationship, this stressful time was simply the catalyst to push the King and his daughter together
I took it as Viserys wants Rhenyra to observe council for a year or two to understand the politics of the Realm before giving her opinions. If she has been observing for a year and didn’t know proper courtesies makes me think she’s more interested in getting things done than she is the game of politics.
While the portabrazier was on-screen, the only thing that I could think of was the end of the opening sequence of Beverly Hills Ninja (ua-cam.com/video/gPfizIgcyxc/v-deo.html).
