I've been droning for 5 years and this is the first thing I tried when I upgraded to the Mavic3 Classic. I hope they incorporate an import capability from Google Earth to set waypoints like Litchi does. Tony, thanks so much for doing all of these training videos. I used your part 107 tutorial to pass my FAA test in the Spring of 2018. I am hoping the editing software keeps improving, so it can align all of this through AI.
I really gotta learn how to do this with my Phantom 4. Definietly saved this to do a walkthrough along side you when I'm trying to do this. Always love the content.
Altitude ( @ 13:50 ) is also dependent on where you launched from - curious if you launched from the same point for both of these, or if you were possibly at a sightly higher altitude for one?
Hmm this is a good point. I'm not sure whether waypoints use the relative altitude but they definitely should use absolute altitude! I usually launch from the same spot, but sometimes I'll launch from the top of a vehicle or something else if there's snow on the ground. That 4 feet or so could make a difference.
There’s a series I enjoy watching called Europe From Above that I’m sure has been using drones and waypoints to shoot some of their scenes over time, same way as described here. It’s very neat!
I have been trying to do some Hyperlapse Videos Using the Waypoints feature.. With mixed results.. Several times the flight paths have not matched up.. Here is what I have learned.. Take off from the same exact spot.. So the Elevation of the drone is the same each time you launch.. Also the version of GPS used by our drones is not the Full blown military version.. More of a consumer version.. So it is not dead on accurate.. I believe it is within 3 meters?? Which is not a good amount when You are trying to match flights.. Also DJI has told me that changes in Barometric Pressure also effect the repeatability of the flights.. Not sure why that is.. But that's what they have told me.. About 50 percent of the time I have been able to match up the shots in After Effects.. But sometimes it is off by to much and you are out of luck with repeatability..
I could be wrong but I believe barometric pressure factors into the altitude calculation at elevations beyond the capability of the bottom sensor. I used to have a hiking watch that used barometric pressure to forecast weather, and one of things you had to do is update your elevation with known values (based on a map for instance). This is because if it picks up low barometric pressure, it can mean either you’ve increased elevation or storm system is moving in. Anyways not entirely sure if this applies to drones but if you’re like me youd find this interesting nonetheless.
Barometric pressure is used on altimeters in regular aircraft. I'm really intrigued that DJI reckons that barometric pressure is a factor because there is no pitot tube on the drone. I thought altitude for the drone was GPS-based and therefore calculated based on azimuth.
Prosumer drones rely on barometric pressure for altitude i.e. barometric altimeter, so weather will impact the height on any given day. Once you get into enterprise mapping level drones such as a M300 RTK, which has LIDAR, and then add in a DEM (digital elevation model) can you get a reliable mission with altitude. I've flown over 100K acres, agriculture missions. Even with those missions, on each battery change, you had to recalibrate the drone for height, and it needs the DEM in order to accurately fly the mission at the desired height. Once calibrated, it then uses DEM to adjust altitude. Altitude is not a GPS coordinate value. So yes, it will help a lot to launch from the same point if possible, but still be aware that your waypoint mission can, and likely will vary.
great video! It is possible to repeat again and again multiple waypoints. For example I saved waypoint 1 and waypoint 2. Could I play waypoint 1 & 2 repeatedly until I stop it manual?
Brilliant! I see Lichi should be coming out with Mini 3p compatibility soon. With the extended batteries, it should be really useful for a lot more people. Great tutorial!
Tony, I would like to photograph Ledge Light with a drone also. From the angle (Ultimate Drone Transitions) it looks like you are either at Goshen Point or Camp Harkness. Is there public parking available there?
Have you seen the "FAIR Construction Site Time Lapse - Longterm Dronelapse?" I can't post links on UA-cam, but that is the name of the video. That is by and far the coolest dronelapse video I've seen. I think what you've done is kind of the same, but did they maybe add some masking too?
Again, a lot of work. Very nice tutorial. I’m sure those that have drones are very appreciative. I had a drone, small, cheap, just to check it out. I flew it pretty good, nice video but then I lost an argument with a tree. I guess I wasn’t that good. Now I’ll buy a lens. Chelsea come back, please.
I'm wondering if it would be worth it to invest in Mavic 3 Enterprise if you would do this a lot. You can attach RTK-module to it which provides centimeter accuracy to the drone(when using separate GNSS base station and/or network correction service). It could eliminate the need of doing multiple fights and time consuming post processing.
@@TonyAndChelsea You should be able to. I don't know the USA specific market/regulation but at least here in Europe you can just simply buy them as private customer(even though the product aimed at enterprises). Even the price isn't that much more if you consider the RC Pro controller worth it. It comes as default with enterprise drones.
There is some intertextual utility here. [The way Betty Edwards implores here followers to seek it out across creative journeys] Sketchbook Skool’s Koosje Koene makes the point about making time in one’s sketchbook to draw the same subjects across time.
Top Tip for waypoints is to always take off from EXACTLY the same spot every time. Tutorials seldom mention this. This helps the drone be at the exact hight etc each time you run that waypoint shoot every time and reduces most alignment issues.
I kinda double-taked on it. It felt so naturally integrated into the story line that I didn't catch it the first time and had to rewind to figure out how he did it!
Where do you live, New York City or Washington D.C.? Or right next to an airport or National Park? Those are pretty much the only restricted fly zones in the country. Of course there are others, but those are the major ones. If you see signs that say 'No fly zone' those are full of sh*t 99% of the time. lol
@@lauragibbons4649 I travel, right now I am in Oregon B4UFLY has the whole coast as a No Fly Zone, mostState Parks have signs, California is the same, Utah also has a lot of restricted areas including the whole of Navajo Nation, most people in uniform approach me to tell me I cant fly in certain areas so I show them apps, my part 107, registration etc, and its just not worth it anymore 🤷♂
Wow, that sucks. A few years ago this was true where I live, because we have enough small airports scattered along the coast that the typical 5-mile radius blocked almost all drone flights. However, now they've limited the no-drone-zones to the flight paths, and I can fly almost anywhere, even quite close to airports as long as I'm not high and not in the flight path.
@@TonyAndChelsea The worst part for me now is as soon as I take off I feel like im doing something wrong 😅, even when I know I am legal and in mi rights, theres always someone saying its a "no drone zone" Its more of a hassle lately. I still fly for paying jobs, but not so much for youtube.
Thank for letting me know I can go empty my bank account and get a drone but after I do that I won’t be able to eat the rest of my life or pay my bills so I have a drone but no life.

Fantastic tutorial. Makes me want to get the drone out this weekend and capture the snow cover for transitions to summer. Thanks!
Yes definitely do that!

Great video thanks. I hope to try this over long periods of time to show changes in seasons, growth of forests, etc.
30 seconds in and this is exactly the video I was looking for. Thanks.
Fully agree. So glad waypoints are back. Well done.
Thanks Tony! I will try this out with my Mavic 3 classic.

Great tutorial video! Any experience flying in stronger winds over 30kmph and attempting way points and matching clips?
Watching at about 1:21 and on that abandoned building... There's an interesting item on the left side of the upper roof around that time...

@@TonyAndChelsea I actually have a Parrot Bebop 2 but it's nowhere the same class as the Mavics. Sadly...

Obstacle avoidance should stop the route automatically but its a good reason to get multiple paths around an area that's being built up.
