The Munich Air Crash disaster happened days later. Utd still beat AC Milan in the semi finals with a depleted team and no Matt Busby leading us. We obviously lost the 2nd leg and Milan inevitably lost to Madrid. Many across Europe believed it was Utd’s year and for Madrid to pass the torch to the young team of Busby Babes to herald in a period of Utd dominance domestically and on the continent. More important than trophies (as you know, despite our rivalry, you will agree both our clubs are more about than only trophies) my point is Arsenal in their next game after the loss to Utd paid tribute to Utd as a club and all those lost and injured. It should be remembered that at that time Utd were a breath of fresh air in the UK and Europe because it was a very young team that was winning league titles and on the cusp of winning the European Cup against the prime Real Madrid. I would have bet the young lads to have beaten the legends of Madrid that season too and to pip Wolves to the title. His 8th and final season was littered with injuries where he contributed a modest 14 GA in 17 games for his standard and it dropped to 98%. The loans spell he had with Arsenal drop it to 97% on his return just think this man in his prime had a GA return that broke the 100% barrier.
