Something a little different to round off my time with FFXII. I hope you guys enjoy this :) Which Esper is your favourite? Mine began as Zeromus, but then became Ultima once I completed everything :) I can't deny that Zodiark's Final Eclipse has some 9 tailed fox vibes which I also really enjoy
Awesome vid Dan! I'm such a lore dork so for me it was a perfect way to end the series. Personally I find it's difficult to choose between Zalera, Ultima and Zodiark but those would be my favourite three.
I love how the quickenings of the Espers would not only blip the monsters out of existence but they would also kill they’re summoners and the environment they’re in, heck even the world lol
I also love how each Esper is connected to a zodiac. Belias - Aries Mateus - Pisces Chaos - Taurus Zalera - Gemini Zeromus - Cancer Hashmal - Leo Shemhazai - Sagitarius Famfrit - Aquarius Cuchulainn- Scorpio Exodus - Libra Adrammaelech - Capricorn Utlima - Virgo And finally Zodiark being the 13th, Ophiuchus.
I wish we could learn more about the scions of light. Only thing we know about them are their names. I like Ultima because she got the balls to rebel against the gods themselves, plus I'm a Virgo.
If rumors of the Final Fantasy XII sequel after Revenant Wings prove true we just might. Gameplay wise I hope it's like Final Fantasy VII Remake and Tales of Arise.
it would be cool if we actually know about the scions of light, like the only thing we know about them is that theya re a counterpart to the espers and that their name was used for characters in ffxiv.
You meet the scions of light in the game they are the occaliry those things that give ashe the blade of kings. Also if they ever make a sequel after the revnant wings i hope its follows a story of the battle between the gods and espers continuing this time with humanity helping the espers defeat them.
I like some twists on classic elemental summons. I haven't played the game but I know XII has some solid lore. The Espers' designs do not immediately reveal what they do, and their name are somewhat obscure in FF culture, apart perhaps from the mermaid whom you can guess has something to do with water. Ice counts. I loved the Meteor Esper because you have no idea why he has what looks like a scale. I expected a judgement bolt of death and justice, but turns out they're Pym tech catapults. The looks and animation of the meteors remind me of Vivi's spell in IX. I freaking adore the water bucket Esper, at no point imagine his actual size. Finally I like how the ugliest most beast-looking of them all is the most powerful, and turns out to be the most gracious and beautiful Esper. Their dreadful descriptions seem over-the-top, but once you see what they can do with zero effort, you start to understand. I don't know why they decided to have summons who would just always destroy the battlefield (or in some cases the world) in one attack. It's maybe a bit too grandiose and visually OP, it can feel like watching an end-game cutscene. I guess we know where XV took its inspiration.
Love the fact that a majority of these "Scions of Light" are reused for the Ascian titles of FFXIV, the biggest tipoff was Elidibus and his association with Zodiark
I remember this Espers from Final Fantasy Tactics where they’re powerful bosses and incarnations of the Zodiac Braves. Final Fantasy Tactics takes places several hundreds and maybe even a thousand years into the future of FF12. All technology along with beast folk and especially sky ship technology was lost when the Espers were used to summon Ultima The Blood Angel and destroyed everything in a global cataclysm. Ironically, Balthier makes an appearance in Final Fantasy Tactics remade and claims to have been brought into the future by unknown means. Anyway, apparently the Espers eventually succeed in destroying the world and maybe even the gods themselves also.
It's Ashe and her friends who disconnect humanity's history from the control of Occuria. You yourself as the player experience the tipping point, gathering all the Espers and using them to realize Ashe's dream. King Raithwall had one Esper, Ashe has thirteen. It would be logical to assume that by acquiring Ultima from The Great Crystal (fittingly kept very close to the Occuria and their source of power), the player dooms the entire future of the world and thus sets the stage for FFT to happen.
Fuckin loved this game, got so into it. I remember reading the Sage Knowledge years ago. Being created powerful by the Gods then going to challenge the Gods themselves?? The punishment tho, Shiiiiii
I didn't pay attention to the lore nor the unique names of these Espers when I was a kid. I only remember them as Zodiac summons. As a Taurus my bias was always Chaos.
Thank you. I always felt like they buried a bit too much about these cool beings in the primer, compared to X where the narrative does a great job explaining the Aeons.
Some of them named after villains of past installments. Ultima - Ultimecia (FFVIII) Mateus - Emperor Mateus (FFII) Zeromus - Zeromus (FFIV) Exodus - Exdeath (FFV)
What does it mean that a mere group of humans could defeat the espers that challenged the gods in a 1000 year war? Are the gods weak? Also, we don't see any of the scions of light? And Lahabrea is a character in ff xiv, is he THE Lahabrea, scion of light? But he's called a scion of darkness in ff xiv. Zodiark is so powerful that the gods themselves are directly stated to have feared him, he had equal authority to them, maybe even higher as his authority is "absolute". That implies nothing could defy him. Could the Zodiark being revived in ff 14 by the ascians/scions of dark be the Zodiark mentioned in this entry? Maybe the espers can only display a portion of their power?
if i remember correctly the so called gods were the octilery basically those guys you met at the top of that giant crystal towards the end of the game and the same guy who posses vayne at the end.
Also they stripped the espers of their true power untill someone could beat them and help them grow strong as a summon once more so they are deffinately nerfed when we meet them.
Thanks for the lore! Always loved how the espers here corresponded to the Ascians of FFXIV. Emet-selch, Loghrif and Mitron are mentioned together in particular. I noticed Zalera's symbol for one is very similar to Emet-selch's when it glows over his face, only upside down. Though, why they're mentioned as Scions and not Ascians makes me curious to know more about them. Haven't played the Ivalice storyline in FFXIV but I hope there's more info about them, if only through lines during boss fights or sth. Zodiark's info definitely shares similarities with FFXIV's Zodiark as well! And I suppose Ascians loyal to him would consider themselves Scions as well. He's scary even as a baby. Don't know much about vedic astrology but there must be a reason why he's the only Esper whose ascendant didn't correspond to a particular zodiac sign but a nakshatra (lunar mansion) instead.
Im playing the zodiac age version, and I tried casting the petrify status on Vaan, who controls Zodiark, then summoning him, but Zodiark doesnt use the ultimate attack... How do I trigger the ultimate attacks of zodiark?
I think you have to cast it on the summoner after Zodiarch is at your side, otherwise it would mean that he does his finishing move right away and wouldn't help you in battle
I never knew about this Lore, having only played XII once about 15 years ago... I see where the names in XIV come from and characters in the Ivalice content. I wonder how the rest will tie into XIV, particularly Zodiark. Fandaniel is the current antigonist but Hashmal was only used as a boss in the Ivalice raids, not really driving the plot... Could just be SE shoehorning previous iterations into their current product?
Think of 12 and 14 as two different ivalices basically mutiverse 12 took one path 14 took the other. But yes they just decided they wanted too shoehorn 12 into 14.
Dirk Jan Swart You should see the boss battle to get Zodiark...took me almost two whole hours. It’s not so much that he’s hard but he’s got a TON of health and has an ability to instantly kill the party and in rare cases kill EVERYONE in one move. Very unfair if you ask me. What’s nice is he’s the only Summon with a damage break that can pass 9999

On the off chance you haven't found an answer in the last 2 days, the names of the Ascians (+Zodiark) in 14 are just a reference to these "scions of light" in 12. 14 is a collage of references to the entire franchise (such as Gilgamesh from 5, Biggs Wedge and Jessie from 7, etc...). They are not the same characters, and only rarely do they share anything more than their names with their original versions (i.e. Emet "never tells a lie" in 14, ergo Angel of Truth).

No , the gods are the Occurian (the ones that give Ashe the treaty blade). The espers were created by the gods to bring control and order to the world but they failed and got punished (except zodiark).
@@lighterudite So what you're saying basically all 11 Epsers that were supposed to bring order and control failed except for Zodiark? How was that possible 🤔 did all 11 of them got corrupted and turned Rogue? Is that? Except Zodiark? What made them go down that path..
There's many reasons why. Most of them gone rogue because of their own power. For example , Adrammelech was sent to keep the underworld creatures under control , but because he was so majestic , he became a leader of these same creatures. The Occuria first born Exodus was a judge of the world , and probably because the world was in constant chaos he just wanted it destroyed , if there's nothing to judge then there'll be order. Cuchulainn was sent to absorb all of the corruption and pollution , but there was too much of it , thus he became hideous and rebelled against the gods. I believe Ultima , Shemhazai and Hashmal just didn't want to be the gods "puppets" , so they rebelled. Belias blamed the gods because he was an "error" , a fusion of beast and man that went wrong. Zodiark was locked away from everything because he was so damn powerful that even the gods feared him , actually they had deprived him from aging. What you see in that final part is actually the "adult" form of Zodiark , where he grows gigantic silver wings.
@@androsthewarriorhighalpha 12 Espers. 12 Espers were corrupted by different things, or their ideals taken to their logical end-- so when Ultima lead the rebellion, the Gods took exception to that and sealed them at war's end. Zodiark was sealed because he was too powerful to be kept in check, yet no other sin was cited, so we can presume that, since he is a child, he is otherwise innocent.
True, but him and Zodiark kinda have the "happy" endings to their stories. One has a new master,to which he refuses to betray and the other one wont grow because well...if he does, then that could make him a OP as shit
Imagine being so OP that even the gods themselves said you need to REMAIN nerfed.... That's Zodiark in a nutshell. In fact, Zodiak and Ultima were the only 2 espers that could crack the 9999 cap in the original FF12
Year later and I wanns ask, how? Zalera literally instakills anything that isnt undead one at a time. Exodus may be random but he still was responsible for helping me through a lot of mid to endgame content. I'm not even gonna get started over zodiark, ultima, and chaos.
That's the reason why we hate this version of final fantasy . even playscore dropped to 6.3, most of eons (summons) are sorrow pain and indian devil folklore, we hate it so much, final fantasy original fanplay died with final fantasy 9, all after are rubbish and scum
I guess you haven't played Final Fantasy Tactics then? The game came out the same year as the original ff7. These Espers and the world of Ivalice are in FFT which is also a 1000+ yrs after FF12
I'm so glad that you read our comments on the bestiary thing! Most people would overlook that when it actually provides great knowledge on the world of Ivalice and such!
You're welcome. The Bestiary is huge to be honest, was interesting for the Espers but seemed too much for me to read it all :) But I think it was a nice inclusion.

Bellis the gigas was the weakest out of all them
True, but him and Zodiark kinda have the "happy" endings to their stories.
😍👍😘
I am getting Silent Hill vibes.
I'm number 54
Too bad the espers are useless in this game.
