The volume on this unit is unreal, it makes the hairs on my arm stick up. Lucky I had the route schedule for this unit for the day :)

What makes the noise in the gearbox?

The reason is that it has straight-cut gears. The signature howl from second gear to third is caused by a "sun-gear" that changes speed quickly during the actual gear change.
