I ♥ Jones in the Fast Lane ...played it back in the early 1990s :-) The humour is still great, and gameplay is fun; I found a Flash version you can play for free online. Great video and explanations!
Some tips & tricks for players ;) Also pasted these tips on the final part 6b. *Z-Mart Discount Store* get these items so go faster through Education: - Encyclopedia - Atlas - Dictionary - Works of Capote Note: if you buy a refridgerator in Z-mart it will need repairs (you will get a bill when your week starts) Clothing from Z-mart will also last a shorter amount of time than clothing from QT Clothing. "You get what you pay for" ;) *Socket City Appliance Store* Once you have a Refridgerator from Socket City Applicances, you can store up to 4 weeks of food from Black's Market, and stop eating those expensive Fries at Monolith Burgers. Continually eating that crappy food for several weeks will eventually give you a Doctor's bill at the beginning of your week!...this may also happen to Jones, who likes his fries. A computer from Socket City is the most expensive item, but if you get a computer, you will both be able to go much faster through education (complete a diploma in one week) and at random the computer will make you some side income at the beginning of the week. The items you buy, like Stereo or TV will appear when you visit your apartment if you live in a Security Apartment. *Bank and Wild Willy* Wild Willy - Rarely, you will get robbed by Wild Willy on the street. He will take all your cash on the spot. One way to prevent being robbed blind is to Deposit your cash in the Bank. Wild Willy may also "rip off your apartment", that means all your goods will be taken. To prevent this from happening, you must rent an apartment in "Le Security". There, your items are safe from Wild Willy ;) Depositing money in the Bank and paying off your Loan (if you have a Loan) will give points on the "Money meter", as well as Seeing the broker might bump it up some. Having cash on your person is what really gives a lot on the "Money meter", though. Depositing all your cash in the Bank at the end of your turn prevents you from spending any cash during the weekend. If you have cash your character will spend a random amount of money, even if "What a Weekend!" message says you stayed at home. Just a quirk of the game, like the Monolith guy saying "Would you like fries with that?" when you order Fries. *Black's Market* You can store "Food For 4 Weeks" once you get a refridgerator, & you can store up to 10 weeks of food if you also buy a freezer. Buying more than 10 weeks of food will make "some of your food spoil". Black's Market also offers Lottery Tickets. There are only 2 prizes: $200 or $5,000. Buying 10 or 20 tickets will get you in the lottery, but winning chances are slim (as in real life). Reading the newspaper brings up a satirical headline and might give a little on the "happiness meter" ("President Hates Broccoli", is an example of a headline.) *Employment Office* If you want fast progress through jobs, start your career in Black's Market as a Janitor and work your way up. To land a the Checker job, you need to put in some work - but once you have a Trade School diploma you can try to get the Butcher job. Getting a degree in Business Admin. and Dress clothing you can be an Assistant Manager, and with a Business suit you can go for the Manager job. From there, I suggest getting Pre Engineering and Engineering diplomas, and work your way up the ladder of the Factory jobs. Note that just to be a Machinist's Helper you need some engineering education and work experience. Eventually you can land the highest paying job as General Manager in the Factory, but it takes work and experience, as well as education. *High Tech University* If the Enroll fee is low (like 30$ or less), you can enroll as many times as you want in advance. For instance, pay for 5 enrollments, and that way you earn 5 diplomas for the same low fee. As mentioned, having a computer and books helps getting diplomas faster. *Rent Office* As shown in this video, it's a good idea to pay rent on time, if not, the next week(s) your landlord will garnish some of your wages each time you go to work. As shown in the video, it's recommended to _Rent Security Apartment_ when prices are low; the rent remains the same during inflation. *Eating* If you forget to eat, you will have around 35% less time in the next round. In the beginning of the game, if you don't want to buy the expensive Monolith burgers, get 1 Week of Food in Black's Market and deposit the rest of the cash money in the Bank before the week ends. If you forget to deposit your cash, you will have some money and that may give you a Doctor's bill (and less time) if you eat spoiled food. Yet if you don't have any cash, you won't get a Doctor's bill ;-) Good luck!
It might be a god idea to try add get the best job at HI-TECH UNIVERSITY. That way you only have to travel to one place to learn and work. Just keep studying until you can get the best job there. I wish I knew where I could download this for my MacBook.
There are lots of options to play it online right within your browser. Just search for "play jones in the fast lane" and several different sites should work.
@saman4xtine If you have the original game, you could run it on a modern system using a dos command prompt emulator called Dosbox. That is how I recorded it to make this video, but getting it set up can be a bit confusing. People keep saying that you can play a flash version online, so searching for that would probably be your easiest option. Hope it helps.
Haha thats seriously great. I'm glad I could drum up some interest in a forgotten classic. Good luck with it... not a difficult game, but it could get addictive.
Funny thing is that George Bush Senior did say he hated Broccoli. So the produce markets shipped him almost 20 trucks of the stuff to the white house haha.
Sierra games kick ass.
I found this game as abandonware last night and actually played a game all the way thru. Great game indeed!
"put food on your family" just made the whole video perfect. Definite thumbs up for a classic line.
Ahhh the nostalgia. This was the first game I played on my brand new 486-SX back in the day. Thanks for the memories

If I recall correctly, there's also a random chance that your savings will be lost from the bank. It'll come up as a headline about some S&L scandal.
