If anyone is confused where he got the alpha+1 just see that the polynomial has degree 2 so you already know the extension field has 4 elements. Or you can add all elements of F2 to the coetient I.e 0,1 and x, x+1 i.e x+(f) etc you will see x^2=x+1 mod (f) because of costs a+H=b+H if a-b in H and -x-1=x+1 mod 2 if you want to use the irreducible polynomial
